Chapter 6: Origins (Part 2)

The Dev started his tale once again.

"Many, many years ago, it was the time when this Mahayug had just started and Bhagwan Brahma had created first humans. They were tasked by Bhagwan Brahma to populate the Earth and to fulfill this task, all those humans who were also the children of Bhagwan Brahma started roaming and settled in various places. All the men married multiple women to increase the efficiency of procreating. One such man was Rishi Kashyap who at that time had married many women, among which were three daughters of Prajapati Daksh. Prajapati Daksh was also a king-Rishi and a son of Bhagwan Brahma. The three daughters were Aditi, Diti and Danu. Many years after their marriage, Rishi Kashyap's wives gave birth to many children specifically, Aditi, Diti and Danu. Aditi's children were called 'Aditya'. Similarly, Diti's children and Danu's children were called 'Daitya' and 'Danav' respectively. The relationship between Daityas and Danavs was as close as sibling but on the other hand Adityas and the other two groups had such hatred for each other since childhood that one would call them sworn enemies and later on that was how their relationship actually turned out to be. Adityas were responsible, kind and honest but Daityas and Danavs were irresponsible and dishonest even though they were kind-hearted. All of them were very powerful as well and that was the reason why the Tridev designated Adityas the responsibility to manage 'Swarg Lok'. Now, let me tell you some important things to understand the tale better. Our universe is actually not only exist in the 4 dimensional plane as you might think, but it is divided in 14 Loks or dimensions as you might call them and These 14 Loks make up mainly two broad layers 7 upper Loks and & lower Loks. Among these Loks, your Earth lies in the lowermost Lok of the upper Loks called 'Prithvi Lok' and in one of these upper Loks is Swarg Lok which is managed by Adityas. After the designation of this role, Adityas gained many powers and became the embodiment of many things such as fire, water, sky (space and time), Sun, Moon, death etc. They not only gained powers and roles but also a new title, 'Dev' or 'Devta'."

Samir who had been immersed in the tale suddenly shouted, "WAIT!!! What?! You mean you are one of Rishi Kashyap's son and an Aditya?"

The Dev just laughed a little like it was nothing big and continued on, "Yes, yes. I am. So what's the big deal? You need to be a little more cool-headed, Samir. You have already more than enough experienced to be able to do so."

Hearing the Dev's speech, Samir felt embarrassed and quickly quite down.

After a brief silence when Samir regained his composure, the Dev continued the tale, "After Devta became the rulers of Swarg Lok which is what you might call heaven in your land, they appointed a king and the one who became the king was 'Indra Dev', Devta of rain and thunder. Their step brothers, Daitya and Danav became jealous of Devs and started a war in which they got defeated and as time passed on their nature also changed for the worse. The once kind hearted beings slowly became the embodiment of evil. Afterwards, they came to be known as 'Asur'."

Samir this time calmly responded, "So Dev and Asur are actually brothers and sisters. However, I have a question. If you are more powerful than them then why don't you kill them all after all, from your reactions I can at least find about your hatred towards them. So, I can rule out the the possibility of familial bonding or love to be the reason. Then what's the reason?"

The Dev answered Samir's questions in a mild manner, "I am impressed, none the least. Now to answer your question, so here's the situation. Us Devs have a teacher who teaces us about various matters and similarly, Asurs also have a teacher. Both our teachers are very capable and in some sense their teacher is better. Our teacher is 'Brahaspati' and their teacher is 'Shukracharya'. They are also the embodiments of planets Saturn and Jupiter respectively. Shukracharya's teachings had made the once weak Asurs much, much powerful. The peace also made us oblivious and this resulted in our loss. This was also because of the spell created by Shukracharya the spell which could revive a fallen Asur as long as their bodies remained, 'Sanjeevani Mantra' or 'Sanjeevani Spell'. During that time we weren't immortal. This put us in a grave danger and we had to retreat shamefully and ask Bhagwan Vishnu for help. That was how the situation became in our second clash and this cycle repeated endlessly for eons now. Even though we are immortal now but we can still feel pain and can be defeated. Do you have a question?" The Dev asked Samir in the midst of the tale.

Samir who had at this point gotten used to being mind-read by the man in front of him replied, "Yeah, what's your name? You haven't told me yet."

"Me? I am 'Yam Dev', Devta in charge of the reincarnation cycle and souls." The Dev revealed a grin in a while and said proudly.

Samir thought of something and then said, "Hmm... that makes sense. Ok, can you now continue what you were telling."

Hearing his words, Yam Dev nodded and resumed the great tale.

"After hearing our pleads, Bhagwan Vishnu gave us an unexpected solution to our worries."

Samir asked, "What solution?"

Yam Dev replied, "He asked us to churn the cosmic ocean."

Samir asked in confusion, "What do you mean?"

Yam Dev once again replied, "During the previous Mahayug, many treasures were lost in the cosmos and to make them reappear we needed to churn the cosmos. But to do so, we needed someone else's help as well."

Samir asked curiously, "Whose help did you need help? And can't Bhagwan Vishnu just help you?"

Yam Dev answered, "Bhagwan Vishnu can't meddle in worldly matters himself as long as Dharma is not in danger."

Samir's rapid fire question once again shotted, "What is Dharma?"

Yam replied at Samir's question, "It is an umbrella term encompassing many things such as righteousness, duty, law and cosmic order."

Samir said with a light of understanding in his eyes, "Oh..., then whose help did you need?"

Yam said grimly, "In the whole cosmos there was only one group capable enough to help us and they were 'Asurs'."
