Chapter 4: Haigreev and the Coming Catastrophe

"So, why did Bhagwan Matsya test Manu?" Samir asked in a puzzled tone.

"Bhagwan Matsya told Manu about the upcoming Calamity for which he needed a man with pure heart who could help others survive it too." The Dev continued in a serene tone.

"But what calamity and why was it coming?" Samir felt a mixed taste of feelings some of which even he didn't know but there was a certainity that he was confused.

The Dev explained, "Manu had also asked the same question and Bhagwan Matsya told him about the events happening right at that moment elsewhere. In Brahma Lok (Realm) where Bhagwan Brahma resides, an 'Asur' (Demon) named Haigreev spotted Bhagwan Brahma chanting the divine knowledge while sleeping and stole it. To understand the divine knowledge he needed some time and before that he could not open his mouth or else he would lose it. Bhagwan Matsya had taken avatar to defeat him and for that the world would need to be flooded so that Haigreev who is half human and half horse couldn't escape easily."

Samir was flabbergasted, "But isn't Bhagwan Vishnu all powerful? If he is then why would he take such countermeasures?"

"He is. But it is his 'Leela'. " The Dev said with a look of admiration in his eyes.

Samir was caught off-guard once again, "But isn't this a bit excessive?"

"Not at all. In this case the flooding had one more role than being the battleground which was to cleanse the Earth from the impurities (evil) from the last mahayug." The Dev continued to explain.

"So that is the case. But do you think that he does this also because he is limiting his powers so that the Earth wouldn't be destroyed?" Samir said understandingly.

The Dev replied, "Smart thinking and yes you are right. Now you are understanding the essence. Good job. Not that I expected any less from 'You'."

"What do mean?" Samir raised his eyebrow.

"Nothing that you should know for now but worry not you will understand with time." The Dev said with an honest smile on his face.

"Not this again!" Samir felt a rage building up and with it increased his curiosity to learn more about everything. He knew that he would not be able to get used to the mysteries pointed out by the man in white.

"But where did he take all these avatars?" Samir asked the Dev in front of him in an attempt to satiate his previous curiosity with a new question.

The Dev answered his question in three simple words, "Only in India."

"Why? I thought that he had taken avatars all over the world."Samir was taken aback.

The Dev started his explanation, "It is because of India's geographical location and its history of rich spirituality which allows only India to be able to contain the energy of higher dimentional beings."

"So that's the case." Samir's eyes lit with a sense of pride because of his origins. Samir was an Indian but because of this fact he had been suffering for all his life. Indian people were discriminated against because of something that had happened in the past and Samir was a victim of this as well. This was also a reason why he had to work in a very small company. But it was the first time in his life that he had learnt of something so significant about his country and its rich history.

"Any more questions?" The man had a cheeky smile on his face.

Samir started laughing, "Haha... How could I forget that you can read my mind. Yes, I have one you said that you are a Dev and that Haigreev was an Asur. But who created you and him. And what is your name. You didn't tell me. Oh and also what is this leela you were talking about previously."

"I was just waiting for this question of yours for some time now. I will tell you about that after the story of first avatar of Bhagwan Vishnu's ends."

"Then quickly continue." With an eager look in his eyes Samir pleaded with the man in front with puppy eyes.

The Dev also laughed and said, "Haha... Okay, okay. So, after telling about the reason for the calamity Bhagwan Matsya ordered Manu to build a huge ship and gather a pair of every species of animals and take them with his family and Saptarishis into the ship. Manu worked tirelessly and used everything in his power as a king to build the ship and took everyone into the ship when the great flood arrived. At this same time Bhagwan Matsya challenged Haigreev for a duel. Haigreev accepted the duel and started fighting Bhagwan Matsya. Haigreev used his fists first to punch Bhagwan Matsya but he couldn't even scratch him. Then he used his legs which were much more powerful than his arms to launch and attack. Bhagwan Matsya dodged the kick and grabbed Haigreev from his legs to throw him. The whole fight was happening underwater and because of this Haigreev got injured because of the undercurrents of the water. Seeing that he was going to lose, Haigreev started swimming away from the duel but unfortunately for him Bhagwan Matsya had guessed this move. He grabbed Haigreev from the neck and started punching him repeatedly. After a few punches, Haigreev's mouth finally opened and all the divine knowledge escaped his mouth returning to Bhagwan Brahma once again."

"But why was the divine knowledge so important for Haigreev and everyone else? And wasn't Manu a Rishi then why are you saying that he was a king?" Samir was dumbstruck by revelation but at this point he had built up a certain level of tolerance for surprise.

The Dev started he babbling once again, at least that was what Samir thought, "The divine knowledge was so important because if someone did understood it then he would become immortal and very powerful. Also, Manu was a king and actually the king of humanity and one of Bhagwan Brahma's child but because of his morality and devotion he was also a Rishi."

Samir raised a question, "But even then, can't Tridev kill him whenever they wished?"

The Dev said in a little bit of frustration which was a first for Samir, "No, they can't because they respect the things earned by one's hard work. Even though Haigreev had stolen the knowledge but he was going to understand the knowledge by himself painstakingly."

Samir raised his flag of question once again, "But what would happen if an immortal being started destroying everything? Will they still not do anything?"

The Dev started saying in a domineering voice, "When someone's earthen pot of evil fills up, then no one can save them. Then Bhagwan Vishnu himself take avatars to right the wrong."

Samir contemplated what he had just heard, "Hmm... Then world has been saved but what happened to Manu?"

The Dev continued, "During the time when Haigreev and Bhagwan Vishnu were fighting, Manu had taken his family and the animals with him into the ship and had set sail towards the Himalayan mountains just as instructed by Bhagwan Matsya. They were sailing in the raging currents of the water trying their best to control the ship. Suddenly, a big wave came towards the ship. Everyone was horrified seeing the scene. If the wave had hit the boat then it would have definitely sunk the ship into the water."

Samir asked like a little boy hearing his grandparents' story, "Then what happened? Did they manage to survive?"
