Chapter 11: Chapter 11 Moving in with Him Tonight
Elder Qiao couldn't possibly be oblivious to the fact that Pei Liyan was likely butting heads with his grandfather, Elder Pei.
Given the relationship between the Qiao Family and the Pei Family, even if they didn't want to give Pei Liyan face, they had to give face to Elder Pei.
But having Qiao Rui move in like this truly presented an opportunity for criticism.
After all, the wedding hadn't taken place yet.
He glanced at Qiao Rui.
Qiao Rui, as if she hadn't seen the rest of them, walked over to the butler and whispered, "Is there really no meat to eat? I'm so hungry."
The butler quickly whispered back, "Miss, the elder prefers to eat lighter at night. At his age, digestion isn't easy."
"Oh, so there is no meat then?" Qiao Rui said with regret. "It seems we're really too poor to buy meat."
Seeing her like this, Elder Qiao immediately flared up, "What time is it, and you're still thinking about eating, eating, eating? Were you starved to death in your past life?"
Qiao Rui gave Elder Qiao a glance, feeling anxious.
She wasn't in the least bit hurried and spoke unhurriedly, "It seems Grandpa is really poor—the poorer you get, the worse your temper, and the worse the temper, the poorer you become. Grandpa, you should change your temperament."
Elder Qiao almost passed out from anger and scolded, "Pack your things immediately and go with the people sent by the Pei Family."
Qiao Rui hadn't expected Elder Qiao to agree so directly. It seemed that the Qiao Family wasn't as powerful as they used to be, still having to consider Pei Liyan's side.
She looked at Elder Qiao and then asked, "Grandpa, is there a dowry?"
Fang Mo, who had just entered the door, was also taken aback and subconsciously looked at Qiao Rui.
The girl's simple and honest face was full of confusion and earnestness.
As if these questions really came from the heart.
Because her face was so simple and naive, it showed not a hint of cunning.
Elder Qiao didn't expect Qiao Rui to also demand a dowry and was even angrier.
But with Fang Mo present, he was hindered from saying anything else.
So, Elder Qiao said, "First move in and see how you get along with Liyan. In a couple of days, we'll bring you back. We'll discuss the specifics later."
Was this a trial marriage?
Qiao Rui chuckled to herself and glanced at Elder Qiao, still selling his granddaughter for glory!
They hadn't even had the wedding, yet she was supposed to go and live with Pei Liyan. Despite the butler saying it was against customs, Elder Qiao had still decided so.
Qiao Rui didn't hold Elder Qiao's decision in high regard.
She watched him unblinkingly, making the old man's expression awkward.
His conscience pricked him.
Qiao Rui raised an eyebrow.
She hadn't expected Elder Qiao to feel guilty.
With Fang Mo there, Qiao Rui, maintaining a calm demeanor, asked Elder Qiao, "Grandpa, if the Pei Family asks about the dowry, should I say Grandpa is poor, or should I say Grandpa is stingy?"
Elder Qiao's lips twitched, frustrated, he shouted, "Did I say I wouldn't give you a dowry?"
"What does Grandpa plan to give me as a dowry?" Qiao Rui pressed on right away.
Fang Mo was surprised, her questions following each other so closely; she clearly knew the art of negotiation well.
Only by persistently holding on could she get a concrete and affirmative answer.
This was the work of a master.
He looked at Qiao Rui with surprise, thinking that this seemingly foolish sixth Miss of the Qiao Family wasn't so foolish after all.
He turned his gaze toward Elder Qiao.
Under Fang Mo's gaze, Elder Qiao's expression became even more unnatural.
Despite feeling all sorts of discomfort, he knew well that providing a dowry for Qiao Rui wasn't for her sake, but for the relationship between the Qiao Family and the Pei Family; he couldn't give too little.
"Rest assured, Qiao Family's dowry for you will certainly be the most generous. Once I have prepared everything, I will personally report to your Grandpa Pei," Elder Qiao said.
With Elder Qiao's words, Qiao Rui nodded. "The dowry still needs some thought, Grandpa, can't you be more straightforward?"
Elder Qiao's face darkened even more with anger. "Will you ever let it go?"
Qiao Rui was taken aback, "My question was quite simple, I just wanted a concrete answer, but you've always avoided giving one. Are you playing Tai Chi, Grandpa?"
Elder Qiao finally realized he was dealing with a formidable opponent.
"It won't be less than fifty million!" Elder Qiao declared sternly.
"Oh, why didn't you say that sooner!" Qiao Rui spoke calmly, "Beating around the bush like this can lead to misunderstandings that Grandpa is reluctant to provide."
"Shut up," Elder Qiao said gravely.
Qiao Rui smiled again.
Anyway, now that Fang Mo could be a witness, she could go and meet Pei Liyan without worries.
She returned upstairs and grabbed her bag.
On her way out, she didn't forget to leave Elder Qiao with a remark, "Grandpa, when I have money, I'll buy you meat."
"I won't eat it!" Elder Qiao said sternly.
"Is Grandpa considering becoming a monk?" Qiao Rui retorted.
Elder Qiao frowned, utterly frustrated.
"Well, yeah," Qiao Rui sighed, "So many granddaughters, each requiring so much dowry, it can drive one into depression. Becoming a monk would indeed leave worldly troubles behind."
Elder Qiao was so angered by Qiao Rui he almost spat blood.
But with Fang Mo there, he couldn't react and had to hold in his anger.
Qiao Rui felt she had teased him enough and finally stopped, leaving with Fang Mo.
Thinking of Elder Qiao's embarrassed expression, she found it amusing.
So, as they made their way, a smile tugged at the corners of her mouth, and she was quite content.
Fang Mo caught a few glimpses of Qiao Rui smiling, finding her expressions a bit odd.
Her lips curled up, yet her face showed little emotion.
Imperial Garden Villa.
Qiao Rui was brought to Pei Liyan's private villa.
Upon entering, a middle-aged couple greeted her with kind faces: "Young Madam, I am Mrs. Feng, and this is Old Feng, my husband."
"Hello, Uncle Feng, hello, Mrs. Feng," Qiao Rui greeted.
"Young Madam, let me show you to your room first," Mrs. Feng led Qiao Rui to the second floor, explaining as they walked, "This is the master bedroom for the young master, this is the guest room; you'll stay here for now."
Not living together, that should be manageable.
Qiao Rui felt more at ease and her steps lightened.
In the study, Fang Mo was reporting the situation to Pei Liyan.
Pei Liyan stood by the window, his tall stature naturally imposing. After hearing the report, he slowly turned, raising an eyebrow: "She asked for a dowry?"
Fang Mo nodded. "Yes, President. The lady was very serious about it and was quite forceful in her approach."
Pei Liyan gave a light sneer: "The Qiao Family is not only poor but also stingy. Qiao Rui asking for a dowry must have hit Elder Qiao's sore spot."
"President, do we still need to give a betrothal gift?"
"Elder Pei will consider it," Pei Liyan said indifferently, "After all, not giving it would dishonor the Pei Family."
He didn't care either way.
Fang Mo, remembering Elder Qiao's deflated look when they left, and thinking about how President Pei Liyan had dealt with Elder Pei, was actually looking forward to it.
He wondered if Elder Pei would end up deflated like Elder Qiao.
Pei Liyan glanced at him and said sternly, "You can go back to your duties."
"Yes," Fang Mo nodded and then added, "President, there's one more thing."
