Chapter 2: Chapter 2.
As the pancake batter sizzled in the pan, turning into perfectly flat and fluffy pancakes, I heard the telltale sound of paper tearing yet again, it echoed within my mind.
Was that the source of my magic?… Did it have anything to do with the realm of books that I found myself in last night?
I had no idea what to make of this magic power of mine, but so far it seemed pretty good.
…After all, I had a magic attack to defend myself, and could now instantly change my outfit on the fly. That's not all that bad, to be honest.
Though I didn't know how my Zap scaled with any other magic users. It could be amazing, average, or downright crappy compared to some of the stuff I've seen in anime.
Ah fuck it, I might as well see how powerful my Zap was, right? And it's not like whatever happens can't be explained away.
"Zap." I muttered under my breath, as I pointed towards a dirty plate that Mom hadn't cleaned, hoping to zap the dirt off of it.
Then in an instant, I watched as a beam of… bubbles came out of my hand, and completely shattered the plate.
"What was that!?" Tomoko shrieked in shock, as she looked at the plate, several shards having fallen off of the kitchen bench.
"I don't know. Maybe it just broke out of nowhere?" I suggested, as I took my focus off of the pan and grabbed the broken shards of the plate.
Picking them up, I noticed that all of the dirt was gone… it was completely cleaned, even though it was broken.
So my Zaps could clean things? That didn't sound… completely right to me. But I didn't have time to think about that. I didn't want the pancakes to burn after all.
After I was finished gathering up the shards of broken plate, I threw them in the bin, and went back to work on finishing up the pancakes.
I finished them around five minutes later, placing three on one plate for myself, and another three on another for Tomoko.
The two of us then went over to the dining room table, and started to dig into our actual breakfasts.
"Oh my goodness… this is great! Thanks Onii-chan!" Tomoko said with a smile, as she ravenously consumed the fluffy golden pancakes.
Meanwhile, I ate at a more… sedate pace, still reeling from the shock of magic being real.
The pancakes were honestly pretty nice, I'd definitely be making more later on.
But after a while, the both of us finished the delightful food, and I made sure to clean up after ourselves, my sister wouldn't be caught dead doing so after all.
"Alright, do you have the right bag this time?" I asked, causing my sister to nod as she gestured to her bag, "Good. Now, let's go… if Shitori-san says anything when we get there. It was my fault, I forgot my bag, you got that?"
"Um, okay," Tomoko said, causing me to nod at her. With that, the two of us walked at a calmer pace.
Thankfully my sister remembered what happened earlier, and wasn't trying to sprint to school.
A Focused Vision - Genshin Impact - Modus (400 CP)
A Vision is used to channel magic, but this does not mean that that magic can't then be channelled into something else. You have a strong talent for infusing your tools with the magic that you wield. In the right hands, this can be used to terrifying effect. As the Yuheng of the Liyue Qixing likes to think; even a hairpin can be turned into a dagger of unmatched sharpness once charged with Electro, capable of cutting through wood and bone and rock. The type of magic you channel will obviously have slightly different effects. Geo is naturally going to have a notably different use than Pyro.
The two of us continued to walk back to Kuoh Academy, when I felt something strange happening.
It was just like before when I gained those… costume tags. I could feel a fountain of knowledge entering my mind.
"Ugh." I groaned, as I stopped walking and held my head, the information practically overloading my mind and giving me one hell of a headache.
"Ryuu-nii, are you feeling alright?" Tomoko asked, as she also stopped, looking at me in concern.
"I'm- I'm fine, just a bit of a headache… you go on ahead, I'll just be a minute" I said, giving her a waning smile, as she gave me one last little concerned look, before continuing back to school.
Once she was out of sight, I leaned against a nearby tree, and tried to mentally parse just what this knowledge was.
…So apparently I could enchant things now, placing my magic into objects and it would let me cast my spells through them. Or anyone else who I gave the item to…
Could I place Zap into one of my Costume Switching Tags? It's not a super strong spell, but it could be helpful.
It didn't seem all that useful to me, to be honest, but it could maybe come in handy later on. Maybe I could give something to Tomoko to let her use Zap to defend herself against perverts?
Then again, she's usually the pervert that people need to defend themselves against. So maybe giving her a magic tool wouldn't be the best idea.
As I figured this all out, the headache eventually went away. So I got up, dusted off my pants, and made my way back to the school.
Which was where I saw something kind of annoying…
I was walking up to the gates, with my bag slung over my shoulder, when I saw an annoying sight.
The Student Council President, Souna Shitori was in the middle of chewing out my little sister.
Now, Shitori-san was a pretty attractive girl, with short black hair, red-rimmed glasses that hid purple eyes that shone brilliantly in the day, and a rather lithe build, wearing the school uniform that accentuated her legs and delicious looking thighs.
But that didn't matter at the moment, what did matter was that she was making my sister uncomfortable.
"You're over an hour late. And nobody has even seen your brother today. Do you have any way to explain your tardiness?" Shitori-san demanded, as she loomed over Tomoko, glaring at my little sister.
"I- ah, um… bag?" Tomoko panicked, completely forgetting what I told her to say while she was under pressure.
Luckily I had planned for this exact scenario. Knowing that my sister would 'fumble the ball' so to speak.
"Yo, Shitori-san, sorry that we're late!" I said with a smile, as I jogged up to the two of them, "I forgot my bag, and Tomoko-chan here came back to help me"
Then I noticed that Shitori-san was giving me a strange look, before looking at Tomoko with… was that pity?
But she was also looking me up and down, as if I was some sort of… highly interesting animal. I didn't know what to feel about that.
"Ah, well then. Hyoudou-san, Hyoudou-san. I do believe that detentions should be in order, but due to the reasoning your brother here has given me, I won't be unreasonable. This time" Shitori-san told the two of us before quickly walking away, inside of the school.
With that, both Tomoko and I quickly followed after her, entering the school and noticing that the gates closed after us.
"So, do we have detention or…? Because I didn't exactly understand what she was saying there?" Tomoko asked, as she looked up to me.
"I don't think we do," I said with a small grin, as I gave her a discreet thumbs up, which she returned with a small smile.
With that done, the two of us quickly split up. With me going over to my classroom, and my sister going to hers.
After all, I was a third year while she was a second, so while she went over to the second floor, I followed Shitori-san up to the third.
The two of us walked up the stairs together, not really paying attention to the other… but I figured that it might be nice to have some sort of conversation partner while getting to class.
As the two of us walked down the halls, I couldn't help but want to fill the slightly awkward silence with something.
"Ah, again. Shitori-san, I'm sorry about the two of us being late. My alarm died on me, and then we both found out we'd be late for school… and in the panic, I forgot my bag, it was a bit hectic" I said with a slight laugh, causing her to look over to me.
"It's… fine, Hyoudou-san. You're not in any trouble this time" She said a little bit tersely, as the two of us continued walking.
"Right, right… hey, uh. I was just curious. But how comfortable are you with the whole… guys being able to transfer to the school? I asked some other girls last year, but they either ignored me or told me that they hated the idea" I asked, causing her to quirk an eyebrow.
"Well, I don't hate it," She said after a moment, a small smile making its way to her face, "Most of the boys here are tolerable… with notable exceptions"
"Ah, the duo? Yeah, they give us a bad name" I told her with a sigh, earning a commiserating nod.
Really, those two made it so much harder to even talk to girls last year, since the literal first second they got in they started to peep into the girl's changing rooms… the only one that didn't get that sort of reaction was Kiba-san.
And that was mostly because he was the 'Prince of Kuoh', with his pretty boy looks and personality.
But still, those two perverts absolutely tanked my chances of getting a girlfriend last year, none of the girls would go near any boy other than Kiba, out of fear of them being perverts like the duo.
…But this year was a fresh start. Maybe I could go out on some dates with a cute girl, and see how that goes? Who knows…
"So, uh… any ideas on what you're going to do after school?" I asked, trying to do some semblance of small talk.
Unfortunately, just like my sister… I wasn't the greatest at it.
Shitori-san quickly stopped walking and turned directly to me, her eyebrow quirking once again.
"Are you… soliciting me, Hyoudou-san?" She asked, a slight glare in her eyes.
"Yes?" I said after a moment, causing her glare to intensify, "That's how you make friends, right?"
I didn't really have many friends growing up, after all. I wasn't always this socially adept.
Hell, I used to be worse than Tomoko at times… which is why I want to help her out of her NEET slump, I knew what it was like. That loneliness and depression is simply put, too much for one person to bare.
"Friends… ah, yes friends," She said after a moment, looking a bit exasperated, "I guess it would be fine to be friends with you, Hyoudou-san"
"Thanks! I'll make sure you never regret it!" I exclaimed with a grin, causing her to give me a small smile.
With that little interaction done, the two of us finally made it to the classroom.
"Sensei, I've found Hyoudou-san, he had an incident at home," Shitori-san said, causing the elderly teacher to nod, before she gestured to my seat.
Understanding her directions, I quickly made my way to my own seat, and watched as Souna went to hers.
I gave her a small smile, when my eyes met hers. And she returned it with a nearly imperceptible upturn of her lips.
Or maybe I was seeing things… ah whatever, I should probably just focus on my work.
Flying Leap - Sailor Moon - Domain (100 CP)
Superman, in his original appearance, could not fly, but he could leap over entire buildings without even taking damage or suffering pain. You can do the same, swiftly jumping from your high place and landing perfectly on your feet or enemies, if you're inclined. You can also do the opposite--jump across the gaps of buildings or jump out of the way of huge blasts. You can land perfectly, without stumbling. This perk will not save you if you are knocked from a high place. Only if you jumped of your own volition, and from a reasonable distance. Jumping from a helicopter or airplane without a parachute remains a bad idea.
As I was sitting in class, listening to the teacher drone on and on about mathematical equations, I decided to just doodle some little drawings in my notebook.
But while I was sketching out some random little eyes and magical girl wands, it felt like I was suddenly hit in the face with knowledge.
And that knowledge was… pretty simply put, how to jump, and jump good.
My body shifted slightly as well, my legs and tendons becoming quite a bit more hardy, along with every other muscle within me.
It was just like that, that I figured out that I could leap vast distances with contemptuous ease, probably further if I managed to get a running start.
"Oh this is so cool" I muttered to myself with a small grin, causing the person next to me to look at me oddly.
But I ignored them and went back to my doodling. This time I was going to draw a magical girl fighting a robotic eye.
Eventually, I finished drawing out the sketch of the magical girl fighting the robotic eye, which I also decided to give alien-like tentacles and laser eyes.
Because what sort of robot doesn't have laser eyes? And what Magical Girl enemy doesn't have tentacles?
…Oh and the bell for class rang, causing me to quickly close my notebook, and very quickly answer the questions that I was supposed to.
Once the teacher went up to my desk, I'd already finished everything and signed my name, before passing it to her with a small smile.
She gave me a smile in return as she read through my answers, her eyes widening slightly before she eventually moved on to the next desk.
Then I put everything away, and went out for lunch. Unfortunately, I had no packed lunch, but I had enough money to get something from one of the vending machines.
After a few minutes of indecision, I figured that melon bread and coca cola would work well enough.
With that done, I walked around, and tried to figure out what I was going to do during my little break from schoolwork.
After a minute or two of thought, I figured it would be a good idea to see my sister.
This was the start of the new school year after all, maybe she had found some new friends?
I sure hoped so, after all. Because that would be great to hear!
So, with that in mind I opened up the packaging of my melon bread and took a bite of it, the sweet taste filling my mouth as I went over to where she would usually hang out.
Walking all the way to the rooftop was usually a bit annoying, but my newfound leg strength made it a breeze.
And that's when I saw her, and another girl sitting on the rooftop trading food with the other.
The girl who was with my sister was a white-haired girl with a cute little black cat hairpin who seemed younger than her, with bright yellow eyes and a cool expression. And she had a bunch of sushi with her.
Like, wow that was a lot. Did she honestly expect to eat that much in a single sitting?
It seemed that my sister was of the same opinion, as she was trading some of the bento that I'd made for her, for some of that sushi.
And from the girl's reaction? She seemed to prefer my homemade bento.
"Ah, no Koneko! That's my karaage!" Tomoko exclaimed in shock, as her newfound friend quickly stole some of her favorite food.
"Yum" The other girl, Koneko said cooly, with the barest hint of a smile on her face as she maneuvered her chopsticks with surprising dexterity… before stealing the other piece of chicken.
"NOooooo!!!" Tomoko despaired, as she laid her head in her hands, utterly defeated.
Koneko on the other hand seemed to exude some sort of smug aura.
This was what I walked in on, and as I closed the door behind me, I seemed to have attracted both of their attention.
"Nii-chan! Quick! Koneko-chan's bullying me! She's stealing from the bento you lovingly made for me!" My sister wailed pitifully, as she ran over to me, leaving her bento completely undefended.
…Her friend seemed to notice this at the same moment I did, as she quickly grabbed it and vanished.
"Uh, your friend's gone…" I said, causing her to look up at me before turning around and seeing both her new friend and bento gone. Vanished into thin air, never to be seen again... okay maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration.
"That- that traitor" Tomoko muttered to herself in horror, before an idea flashed in her eyes as she went to grab one of the girl's sushi rolls.
But the second she did, she had to quickly backpedal as the white-haired girl returned and scared the living daylights out of my sister.
"So, you're Hyoudou's brother?" The girl asked, tilting her head curiously.
"Yes, yes I am," I said, over my sister's wailing… before noticing that she was making her way to my bag, "Tomoko. We both know I don't have a bento in there, get out of that"
She quickly hissed at me and went for another sushi roll, before being swiftly deflected yet again.
"Curses! Foiled again!" Tomoko exclaimed, as she fell to her knees in despair, "…I'll never eat again"
…My sister was so weird at times.
"Come on, you little gremlin… here, take this and get something from the vending machine," I said, as I opened up my wallet and passed her some of my loose Yen, gesturing over to the sole vending machine that was on the rooftop.
Actually, now that I think about it. Why was there a vending machine on the rooftop? It's not like anyone's actually supposed to be up here.
"Thank you thank you thank you! I'll never forget this, nii-chan!" Tomoko said happily, as she wrapped her arms around my waist, which was usually just an excuse for her to sniff me.
…And looking down I saw her huffing in my scent with a truly perverted look on her face. Before she quickly let go and ran over to the vending machine and input the money needed for a bag of chips and a juice box.
With that, I just sat down on the rooftop, and watched as Tomoko hesitantly spoke with her new friend, Koneko.
The girl wasn't a very verbose girl, usually just answering with hums and nods. But she seemed like decent enough company for my little sister.
And hey it didn't look like she was trying to bully her or anything… well, unless it came to food I guessed.
So I just stayed on the rooftop with the two girls, watching as my sister came out of her shell a little bit.
And I also learned that the girl was Toujou Koneko, a First Year Student at Kuoh Academy.
…Which must have been hell on my sister's ego, as I could already tell that the girl was a bit bustier than her.
But I shouldn't think thoughts like that.
And after a while, the bell rang and I decided to quickly head back to my classroom. Ready for my next class.
