Carrying a Jurassic on me

Chapter 18: Chapter 18 The Gun is Too Weak_1

Since Lin Baoguo agreed to talk to the school, the matter was essentially settled.

Everyone in the town, who was willing to attend junior high, could usually finish it. Especially as Yan Fei was known for not causing trouble in elementary school; he didn't talk or fiddle during class, at most he liked to sleep.

Yan Fei had made up his mind. The school was so close to his home, as long as he could continue there, even if he was just idling the days away, he would still learn something. The small town had everything from elementary to high school, it'd be a waste not to attend.

Even though his aim was to make money, he understood the benefits of schooling. At the very least, if he didn't go to school, he wouldn't know how to read or know about dinosaurs. Even if it was just to learn more about his own island, he was willing to spend more days at school.

During the day, when his "target" returned to its nest, he finally saw the effectiveness of last night's shot—the place where the pterosaur was hit looked burnt or maybe smoked, in any case, a small section had changed color.

Other than that, there wasn't much of an effect. The small spot Yan Fei guessed, was similar to a bruise; it was also possible that it was just stained by the gunpowder, anyway, Yan Fei had no intention of touching it to find out.

This was such a daunting task!

Letting out a long sigh, Yan Fei took the opportunity to steal several dinosaur eggs, one to cook for the upcoming meal, the rest to be saved for later use. He was really too lazy to monitor every day which eggs were newly laid, so he planned to do it this way in the future, observing several targets at once and preparing meals for three, five, seven, or eight days at a time.

After packing up, he set off to steal some bamboo poles from the bamboo forest.

The bamboo here wasn't the giant moso bamboo that could grow as thick as one's thigh, but green bamboo, the thickest was only about the size of a child's wrist. Yan Fei didn't understand other uses, he just knew that this bamboo was perfect for making a fishing rod.

During the day, there were some youngsters playing in the bamboo forest, mostly junior or high school students. But they were mostly taking photos, while Yan Fei chose a suitable location by sneaking around.

A trench right next to the bamboo forest.

Remembering the spot, he began to wander around to see if there were any traces of wild chickens or rabbits. Around noon, there was no one around, including the distant farmland.

Yan Fei took out a small saw and sat in the trench he had picked out earlier, starting his "theft".

The bamboo here was just for appearance, the whole body was emerald green, pleasing to the eye. But probably because it was cheap, the old man who looked after the bamboo forest didn't seem to care much about it. He mainly prevented it from accidentally being set on fire by someone and causing a greater disaster. Most of the time when children came to "steal" a bamboo pole or something, they could generally succeed—except when the old man looking after the bamboo forest or the people working in the nearby farmland saw them, no one uttered a word.

Fearing that one might not fit and he wouldn't be able to replace it, Yan Fei sawed off two pieces in the blink of an eye and stashed them on the island. As he was leaving, he spotted some bamboo roots sticking out of the trench and decided not to leave yet.

He dug out a small shovel and after scraping for a while in the trench, uncovered a large section of bamboo roots along with a few small bamboo shoots. He unceremoniously took all of them, found a spot on the island to dig a hole, and buried them.

After brushing off his hands, he walked away nonchalantly.

On his way home, he bought seven or eight fishing hooks and five or six reels of fishing line, which in total only cost two yuan. When he got home, he swiftly made two fishing rods. The float was replaced by foam found at home, as the store-bought ones were too easily damaged and a waste of money.

After making the stuff, he quickly started cooking.

At lunchtime a girl had come over to eat with him, in the afternoon a couple of buddies accompanied him by the river to catch crabs. After dinner, Yan Fei got busy again.

He went back to the bamboo forest, to the spot he had noted in the morning, and after a quick search, he caught a rabbit. Halfway on his journey to the county town, he casually found a spot to enter the island.

Clean the gun, prepare.

The gunpowder had been too scarce last time, this time he would add more, he didn't believe the pterosaur could withstand it.

A whole tube of gunpowder was inserted.

Aiming at the area he had shot the day before, sighting the target, he fired!

The flash of fire accompanied the gunshot, completely infuriating the pterosaur.

This time, the results weren't too bad, and it seemed like the wound was bleeding. However, the wound was virtually unnoticeable, leaving no room to examine the extent of the injury. Despite this, Yan Fei couldn't help but grin with delight.

But after a short while, he stopped laughing.

The Pterosaur thrashed about for a while, unable to find its enemy, and after a while, it settled down. It was as if nothing had happened at all?

He assumed that the wound was not deep, otherwise, it wouldn't bleed so little. Feeling somewhat frustrated, Yan Fei began to understand. Although this Pterosaur is not the largest he's seen, it's still significantly larger than him. As long as its skin is thick and the shot doesn't cut too deeply, combined with its large size, such a minor injury would feel like being pricked by a needle, far from severe.

Yan Fei quickly regained his fighting spirit. One shot a day, targeted at the same area each time; he was determined to kill it eventually.

Then he hurried to the town where he collected a rabbit on the way. After taking a catnap in a cave under the bridge, he proceeded straight to Fifth Brother's Beef Shop.

This time, he woke up early and arrived in town while it was just dawning.

The town was quite different from the village. Early in the morning, people were jogging on the riverbank, practicing Tai Chi, and some even playing by themselves, banging against trees. Essentially, there were all sorts of activities taking place.

Yan Fei concluded: The people in town live better lives; they are idle enough to go crazy!

Before he reached Fifth Brother's Beef Shop, he could see the shop owner, Fifth Brother, shirtless, wielding a huge hammer, and slamming it down on a semi-grown calf tethered before him.

The posture, the action, looked so familiar?

Seeing Yan Fei arrive so early, Fifth Brother greeted him with a smile, "You're quite early today!"

Watching him holding the big hammer, Yan Fei felt a wave of delight, "Yeah. I caught two today, last night actually. They're guaranteed to be lively."

Fifth Brother laughed at how Yan Fei had tied up the rabbits, "Why don't you use a small cage? It's more convenient to carry and if you can't make it here in a day, you could feed them a bit so they won't starve to death."

While talking, he had already taken out the money. Yan Fei saw that he was busy, so he took the money, hung the rabbits, said goodbye and left. But he did take note of what Fifth Brother said about the small cage.

He decided to get a small cage when he got home. He could put any rabbits he caught into the cage. If he could store a few and make the trip here, it would be a lot more convenient and he wouldn't have to visit the town every day.

Feeling his stomach growling from hunger, Yan Fei begrudgingly bought some steamed buns from a street vendor to begin his journey home. He had finished his buns before even leaving the town, still feeling hungry. This was why he was reluctant to buy food. However, once he left the town and the crowd thinned, he could find a spot to enter the Pterosaur's haven and pick up some cold meat to make do.

When he got home, he was busy finding wires and nails, and then had to go shopping again when he ran out. It took him almost the whole morning to make an extremely ugly, but absolutely sturdy cage.

It was a bit big, a bit heavy, but he estimated it should be able to hold about ten rabbits or so.

In the afternoon, he couldn't resist the call of sleep. Even when Yang Qian and the others called him to go out and play, he stayed home to rest fully, preparing for the night's hunt of the Pterosaur.

In the evening, a fully rejuvenated Yan Fei prepared the ammunition. Looking at the Pterosaur in question, he was taken aback—the Pterosaur wasn't stupid, it had tilted its head and the injured area was obscured by its body.

Yan Fei was furious, not seeing the Pterosaur change its posture after waiting for so long. He shot at the Pterosaur's neck without targeting the area. He didn't even check the effect afterwards.

When he looked again, he was moved to anger.

The Pterosaur's concealed wound was barely visible if not examined closely. Was this just one day later?

He was at a loss for a while. The gunpowder he'd found was already in short supply. He initially planned on shooting once a day and wear the Pterosaur down as the wound would never heal. Seeing the rapid healing of the Pterosaur, he knew his original plan wouldn't work.

He counted his ammunition, estimating he could only fire six or seven more shots. Yan Fei watched the alert Pterosaur flock, abandoned the idea to bomb them all at once, and decided to hunt rabbits instead.

He had no choice, the Pterosaur nest was a bit dangerous. In case during the very moment he entered, the unsettled Pterosaurs, who were just disturbed, fluttered their wings, his slight body wouldn't be able to withstand it.
