Chapter 15: Chapter 15 Scary Rabbit Selling_1
"Oooooo...quack quack..."
In the pitch-black night, a strange call floated in the river breeze into the ears of two people who came out in the middle of the night to catch rabbits.
The light flickered, and a trembling voice said, "Fourth Brother, did you hear any noise?"
"Shut up...." Another rougher voice stopped the first speaker.
Then the light slowly swept around. Obviously, the two people started looking for the reason for the noise.
"Help... "
Another sharp shout rang out, this time clearly human.
Apparently, hearing human voices made these two less afraid. The one who called out 'Fourth Brother' shouted, "Who's there? Come out, we have guns!"
"Hee-hee-hee-hee... squeak... don't eat me... hurry and save me..."
The cry for help mixed with weird noises sounded again.
This time the two people were a bit flustered. The one called Fourth Brother who had shouted just now, spoke loudly again, "What's there, come out!"
Accompanying the shouting, a "bang" of a gunshot echoed in the river valley, lingering for a long time.
"Ah... squeaky... hee-hee..." Yan Fei sometimes turned into a Compsognathus and let out a couple of strange sounds, sometimes turned back into a human in a place where they could not see and shouted a few times. As long as it was mournful, he would shout it, imitating the faintly eerie sounds from an adolescent voice changing, made him even more creepy.
He had seen that the two people had actually got prey as soon as they arrived. The man who had just spoken, probably the one called Fourth Brother, was wearing a mining lamp on his head and holding a gun. He just fired the gun and started refilling with gunpowder; the other man held a dead rabbit in one hand and a flashlight in the other, clearly hiding, presumably the one who had initially called for Fourth Brother who was more timid.
Taking advantage of the one called Fourth Brother busily reloading gunpowder and lead shot, the timid one was holding a flashlight and shining it haphazardly. Yan Fei swayed to the beam of his flashlight, grinning widely at him, and then swiftly passed by, quickly leaving along the sand dune.
Only after he had rounded a small sand dune did he hear the flashlight man scream, "Fourth Brother, there's a monster, I just saw it..."
With a splash, this man was so tense that he clung to the arm of the one called Fourth Brother. With a tremor, he dropped the bag of lead shot on the ground, and it scattered all over.
The one called Fourth Brother was so angry, "Damn it, are you as timid as a mouse? We come here quite often, there are no monsters!"
"There really are... there really... ah..."
While the two men were in utter chaos, Yan Fei had quietly sneaked up on them again. This timid man could hardly hold his flashlight. As soon as he opened his mouth to speak, Yan Fei ran a few steps quickly, suddenly jumped up, stepped on his back, and fell into a nearby bush, disappearing instantly once he was in the bush.
"Hee-hee-hee..."
Inside the cave on the island, Yan Fei's triumphant laughter echoed.
After laughing a couple of times, he counted the time. About half a minute later, he reappeared in the bush.
He looked up and laughed, one person was facing his back, shouting at a figure fleeing in panic in the distance, ".....there's nothing here, don't scare yourself...."
"Quack Quack...Wah..." Yan Fei suddenly made a strange noise, jumped up without courtesy, scratched his back, and then returned to the cave.
This time he waited for almost half a minute, appeared in the bush again, a light just happened to sweep his head, he quickly held his head still, waiting for the light to pass, then repeated his old tricks, let out a strange noise and gave the man another start.
With a "bang", a gunshot rang out, Yan Fei was delighted to hear it: Does he think I don't know he's out of lead shot? What's the use of firing a gun just with gunpowder and no lead shot?
Watching the man flee in panic, shooting wildly, he very cooperatively transformed back into a human, pinched his nose, and called out to the man pitifully, "Come back... come back...come..."
The fleeing figure stumbled, almost fell, and seemed to even drop his gun without picking it up, just ran away without looking back.
Yan Fei looked at the disappearing figure, smirked, and went to the place where the man had almost fell: as expected, the gun lay quietly there on the ground!
He picked it up and looked, good gracious, it was almost as tall as him when standing upright.
There was also a plastic bag nearby, he picked it up and looked, not bad, there were neatly rolled paper tubes inside, opened a paper tube and looked, black powder, if it's not gunpowder then what is it?
Yan Fei laughed in delight, going back to the place where he had just attacked the two men, there were leads shots left there!
The lead shots were in a small cloth bag. There was not much left after they fell and scattered everywhere. Yan Fei thought about it and went back into the cave.
There was a small corner in the cave with many "treasures". Toy guns, decorative paintings, cigarette packs, glass balls, everything imaginable. Yan Fei rummaged through them and found a ring magnet taken from an old radio -- a blacksmith's child would not lack this as he used to play with it by using it to pick up iron filings when he was child.
In the black night on the river beach, between the high and low sand dune and tufts of grass, faint laughter echoed through the river wind.
There was no helping it, Yan Fei was just too excited!
He reckoned he had picked up at least ninety-nine percent of the scattered iron sand with his magnet stone. Who else would have such a complete set of equipment? Not only did he have digging tools for rabbit hunting, he even had a magnet stone.
He gained one hunting shotgun. Although he would have to keep it hidden, he could secretly test it on the island with no problems. Afraid of danger? If worst comes to worst, we'll just load less gunpowder!
Just consider it confiscation on behalf of the police! Anyway, our method is more thorough than the police's destruction. Can't the destruction leave a little residue?
He hid in the cave the whole time, touching the gun. He stood at the mouth of the cave with an empty gun, aimlessly pointing it around and making 'pa-pa-pa' shooting noises, until he finally remembered what he had come out to do today.
When he left the cave, he was still so delighted. After transforming some dinosaurs and standing in the wind for a while, he finally calmed himself down and started tonight's real task, hunting for prey.
Then, he smelt a familiar scent of blood.
Following the source of the smell, sure enough, there was a bloody rabbit that had recently died in a grass nest.
This was obviously dropped by the skittish kid who had just run away. Yan Fei muttered to himself: Good luck is in the stars, good luck is coming. And he indiscreetly collected the rabbit.
Because of this unexpected harvest tonight, when he later caught two more rabbits, Yan Fei didn't find it surprising at all.
By the time he reached the area near the old bridge in the county town, it was the quietest time of the night. He went into the cave to sleep until he woke up naturally. When he emerged from a bridge hole, the sun was already high in the sky.
"Ah... I guess I need to get a watch to check the time!" Yan Fei sighed, feeling like he woke up a bit late. Coming out of the bridge hole, ignoring the surprised looks of the idle people by the river, he carried two rabbits onto the bridge head.
"Boss, do you want wild rabbits here? They're alive, caught them just last night!" After looking around for a while, Yan Fei finally approached a restaurant with a strong "presence", opened the door and asked a middle-aged woman.
"Ah... Let me see, not bad. Would you sell them for ten dollars each?" The middle-aged woman invited Yan Fei to pick them up, looked at them left and right, and finally spoke.
Yan Fei turned his head and left, with the woman calling out behind him, "Hey kiddo, don't leave, I'll give you an extra two dollars per rabbit..."
Yan Fei almost lost his temper and hit the woman with the rabbits, where would he stay?
He asked a couple more shops, the highest offer for a rabbit was twenty dollars. Yan Fei was a bit upset. These things were not like domestic chickens and ducks or eggs, with stable prices. It was all about how you negotiated with the buyer, but Yan Fei had no experience in this and left unsatisfied after each inquiry.
Before he knew it, he had reached a crossroads. Diagonal to him was a bus station, and next to it was a shopping mall. The buildings on the side of the road were much more "majestic", and lots of people were coming and going, which was much busier than the small town.
"Hey, lad with the rabbits, are those rabbits for sale?" Yan Fei heard the voice and turned around to see a shirtless hunk standing at the doorway of a beef shop nearby.
Yan Fei immediately became alert.
This guy was pretty intimidating. He had tattoos on his arms, a scar on his body, and a gruff face. He looked just like the main villain in a movie. Plus, his name was 'Bro', which was local slang meaning 'brother', but it made Yan Fei feel uneasy.
Furthermore, the beef shop was downtrodden; there was a large pool of dark, purplish-black blood on the ground at the entrance. Although it was covered with dirt, it was still clearly visible. All in all, this guy did not look like a good person.
"No, I'm waiting here for my father!" This was advised by Xu Xiaoyan, if you encounter someone who doesn't seem like a good person, first say you're waiting for someone to deter the bad guys.
The man glared at him, reaching into the half-long trousers he was wearing: "Kid, you're quite alert! Come here, I'll give you the money first, fifty dollars for two. Others definitely won't give you this price."
Yan Fei was about to leave, but when he saw the money he couldn't resist. He grabbed it and handed the rabbits to the man, saying, "Thanks!"
After saying that, he turned to leave, but then the man called out again, "Could you get more in the future? I'll still want it if you do!"
Yan Fei, who had just taken two steps, stopped in his tracks and turned to ask, "Aren't you a beef restaurant owner? Why do you want wild rabbits?"
The beef boss gave a toothy grin: "I can't eat beef every day, can I? I usually have many friends coming and going, and I cannot always serve them with beef, can I?"
Thinking about it, Yan Fei nodded and agreed, "OK, will you still give me twenty-five bucks for each rabbit in the future?"
The beef boss made a weird smile, "Each rabbit is still game, which is cheaper than my beef. Whatever amount you've got, bring it here. Don't worry, my shop won't cheat you kids! I might even trick you into becoming human meat buns..."
Hearing this, Yan Fei was somehow not scared: "Thank you, uncle. I will bring them here if I get any in the future."
The beef boss chuckled: "OK, you can come anytime, just don't call me uncle, call me Fifth Brother. If I'm not in my shop in the future, as long as there're people in there, you just say that Fifth Brother has already priced it, they will give you the money."
Yan Fei nodded, "OK. By the way, Fifth Brother, where can I buy a digital watch?"
The man nicknamed Fifth Brother pointed to a place: "The shopping mall next to the bus station. As soon as you enter, they will be hanging on the shelves. The kind of timer that can read seconds is seven bucks, and the plastic one you wear on your hand is normally five bucks."
Yan Fei, who was anxious to own a watch, thanked the big fellow and was about to leave when the man shouted again, "Be careful with your money…"
Yan Fei waved back without turning his head and ran toward the road.
