Chapter 10: Chapter 10: Dinosaur Chasing Chickens and Rabbits_1
Just as people have times of misfortune such as natural and man-made disasters, so do wild chickens.
After all, Sancha River town is not mountainous, but a bona fide plain area. It's densely populated and all cultivatable land has already been cultivated. There is only limited idle wasteland, so, correspondingly, there are no dedicated dog breeders to catch hares or wild chickens. People with trapping and catching skills are also rare.
So, as long as there is a suitable environment, wild chickens and rabbits here can live quite comfortably. It's hard for people to catch them, and even the local dogs can't keep up with them in the weeds.
However, there are always unfortunate ones.
For instance, if an individual insists on opposing them, although this individual might not be human and might not be quite old, he really comes from an inhuman group.
The wasteland alongside the bamboo forest by the river is not that big. Even if it's all trenches and ravines with no routes available, for a Compsognathus it doesn't take long to make a circuit around it.
By the time it isn't fully dark yet, Yan Fei has almost completed a circuit.
And he has already set his target.
When a wild chicken that had just finished feeding outside and was quietly returning home noticed the danger, it was already a little too late. It was too careless. Initially, when it saw a strange small creature not much larger than itself, it even attempted to fight back by flapping its wings. In fact, the long neck of the Compsognathus had deceived its vision. This wild chicken wasn't as large as it thought.
Yan Fei was also a little careless. He thought he could easily suppress this wild chicken. Facing the boldly approaching wild chicken, he deftly avoided it, relying on his nimble body to let the chicken miss its target. Then he took the advantage of the moment to lightly jump and stand on the chicken's body.
Surprisingly, the alarmed wild chicken broke out, throwing him off before he could even steady himself. Honestly speaking, when Yan Fei first got onto the back of the wild chicken, he hesitated a bit about whether he should try to bite the chicken's neck. Wasn't that the way hunting is supposed to look?
Only after he was flung away did he react, realizing that he was not a real Compsognathus.
At this moment, the wild chicken had already cried out twice and started running away. The nearby weeds and shrubs that could have caused trouble for the pursuer were essentially useless for the Compsognathus. On the contrary, these weeds left clear traces of the fleeing wild chicken.
However, merely a moment later, the Compsognathus had chased up to the wild chicken. Feeling the danger, the cornered chicken was gearing up for another desperate fight. Then it was dumbfounded, as the strange creature that was just behind it suddenly turned into a human and grabbed it in the blink of an eye.
Luckily this wild chicken couldn't speak human language. Otherwise, it would surely curse: it's clearly fucking cheating!
Then Yan Fei successfully took the captured wild chicken back to his cave. Humming a little tune, he walked with a light and buoyant step, tied up the chicken's legs, put it in a snakeskin bag, tightened the mouth of the bag, and went out again to continue hunting.
Obviously, one wild chicken was not enough to satisfy his "ambition".
The nimble body of the Compsognathus moved amidst the weeds, its slender neck frequently darting here and there, and occasionally stopping to sniff the air. Following the scents he wanted, Yan Fei gratifyingly found the nest of the wild chicken.
Reality can be cruel sometimes, as what he had found might only be a fake nest made by the wild chicken. There was nothing in the wild chicken's nest except for some chicken droppings.
The scents around here were somewhat mixed up. It would be difficult to find the real nest of the wild chicken again.
Yan Fei wasn't disappointed. He continued to move along the trench, stopping now and then to listen to the surrounding sounds. In the shrubs and weeds, his nose and ears were clearly more useful than his eyes.
Time passed slowly, and it was completely dark now.
The sound of the river flowing in the distant bamboo forest and the continuous chirping of insects surrounded him.
There was basically no significant danger in the shrubs and the weeds during the night. If anything, the most dangerous creatures in this place would be things like snakes, centipedes, and scorpions.
There are few centipedes and scorpions here, but there are a lot of snakes of various species. But in reality, there's only one dangerous species. Even though this one poisonous snake is very famous and extremely toxic, deep down, Yan Fei didn't think he needed to be afraid of it.
The dexterity and the surprisingly strong body of the Compsognathus gave him enough confidence.
He even thought that if he encountered one, perhaps it would bring an unexpected fortune. There are scorpions, centipedes, and snakes in the Chinese Medicine Store. If he caught one, could he ask Mr. Old He if he was buying?
A little abnormal movement not far ahead caught his attention. He quietly approached and then peeked his head over, chuckling at what he found.
A wild chicken was in a shallow hole at the bottom of a trench, probably sensing some danger, it moved a little inside the hole and then froze.
If it had remained still, Yan Fei might not have discovered this wild chicken at all.
Its nest was hidden under some shrubs halfway up the trench, with the roots of the shrubs and weeds hiding the nest tightly. If it wasn't for the fact that the Compsognathus was small in size and had a low eye level, even a human standing in the trench might not be able to find this wild chicken nest.
The Compsognathus had a quiet body movement, but as an impromptu Compsognathus imposter, Yan Fei didn't think that the wild chicken couldn't hear his movement. You must know that wild chickens rely on their extraordinary hearing to avoid danger and survive.
And the state this wild chicken was in, clearly indicated that it had experiences where staying still and hidden saved it from danger. It was convinced that as long as it stayed still and hidden, the enemy wouldn't notice it. So it didn't move at all at this moment.
So Yan Fei easily went over, transformed into a human and abruptly reached out to catch the wild chicken.
Unfortunately, there was only one chicken in the nest, no eggs, no chicks. Yan Fei wasn't entirely clear about the habits of wild chickens and didn't have the patience to find out. He just felt it was a pity to only find one chicken after searching so hard for a nest.
Back in the cave, as he was tying up the chicken, he wondered if these two wild chickens were a couple. It seemed plausible. The first one he caught was a rooster, this one was a hen. Could he have possibly caught both members of the couple?
These two wild chickens managed to satisfy Yan Fei's "appetite".
The main thing was, if he didn't have the "life goal" of making money, he would have lost patience long ago and gone home to sleep. It was the dead of night, nobody around and with a bamboo forest in the distance appearing eerie under the night sky. Even knowing there was no danger, not many people would want to stay here.
After securing the chicken, Yan Fei planned to return home.
With the mindset of trying to hit two strokes no matter if dates were present or not, the Compsognathus was still cautiously observing its surroundings, slowly walking towards a path.
It seemed like beginners generally had better luck.
Near the little path, he saw a rabbit hopping around looking for food.
When he saw the rabbit, the rabbit also noticed him. So, the rabbit started running and he unconsciously chased after it.
This rabbit knew its way around, it didn't run far before it disappeared into a hole. Yan Fei, who hurried over, saw a dark cave.
But unfortunately, this rabbit was fated for misfortune.
What it encountered was not just a Compsognathus, but a Compsognathus who was the son of a blacksmith and knew how to grow sweet potatoes.
So the Compsognathus turned into a human, first took out a shovel and dug around a bit, didn't feel quite right. Then he took out a hoe used for farming from the cave, thought about it and switched to a rake, and began to dig at this hole.
The dull sound of digging, although not loud, was enough to startle the dog tethered at the entrance of Old Lin's bamboo forest. Thankfully it was just the dog barking, Old Lin in the bamboo grove didn't come out.
Otherwise, both of them would feel pretty awkward. In the dead of night, a child was swinging a rake about in the wilderness. Most importantly, this child was stark naked!
The soil here wasn't hard due to its location near a large river and being at a bend of the river. Every summer during the flood, this place can get flooded, so Yan Fei managed to till a large area without much effort.
Then out of the corner of his eye, he saw a grey shadow flash by.
He didn't have time to bring the rake into the cave. He quickly transformed back into Compsognathus and chased after it.
This time, the rabbit was so desperate that it seemed to run without any plan. Perhaps there were no more holes for it to hide in. It sprinted across the deserted land, attempting to throw its pursuer off its trail with speed.
To its disappointment, unless it hadn't been seen by Yan Fei, the latter had the correct tools to dig holes. Thinking of running? This old trick of its wouldn't work here. It first had to be able to outrun him!
The distance between the Compsognathus and the wild rabbit was closing in. Just as the wild rabbit jumped over a small trench, the Compsognathus behind it leaped, transforming back into a human mid-air when landing.
As he pinned down the rabbit, Yan Fei couldn't help but tease, "Damn it, kid, even when I'm naked I can still catch up with you!"
He wasn't just naked, he was bare-bottomed!
The rabbit was tied up tight as well. Feeling a little carried away, Yan Fei got scratched by its claws. Although the skin wasn't broken, it still stung. So when it came to tying it up, he bound a few more rounds.
Initially, he wanted to continue digging that rabbit hole, maybe there are baby rabbits inside? However, he ended up giving up on the idea. Once he made off with all of them at once, what else would there be to catch in the future?
Picking up the rake that he had left by the rabbit hole earlier, this time there were no surprising discoveries. It was a smooth journey home.
When passing the bamboo forest, the tethered dog began barking at him again. In a good mood, he simply stood in the middle of the path, making faces at the dog. Sometimes he would transform into a human, sometimes a Compsognathus. This freaked the dog out so much that it ended up hiding with its tail between its legs.
If Old Lin hadn't called out asking who was there, he would probably have kept tormenting the unlucky dog a while longer.
By the time he returned home, it was already the middle of the night.
As Yan Fei lay in bed, he dreamt all night. Sometimes he was chasing wild chickens, other times rabbits. As he chased them, the rabbits and chickens turned into banknotes fluttering ahead, making him wake up laughing several times throughout the night.
