Chapter 63: Chapter Sixty Three
The silence was deafening. The sheer weight of Yui's presence seemed to shift the very air, making it feel heavier with each passing second. Her twin hammers gleamed ominously under the faint, flickering lights of the ruined corridor, the polished steel reflecting the faint pink hue of her eyes.
Grorubas tilted her head, brushing nonexistent dust off her shoulder where the marble had struck. A grin slowly spread across her face, cruel and amused. "Another one? How delightful. Tell me, little hammer-wielder, do you truly believe you can fare any better?"
Yui didn't answer. Her gaze remained locked on the black cracks snaking across Mai's face, her expression unreadable save for the quiet fury burning in her eyes. She took a slow step forward, the ground beneath her feet cracking with the force of her movements.
Alice dragged herself to her feet once again, coughing as blood dripped down her chin. "Master… she's not herself. Be careful."
"I know." Yui's voice was steady, a stark contrast to the rage radiating from her. "But that doesn't matter. I'll bring her back, no matter what."
Grorubas barked a laugh, the sound reverberating unnaturally through the ruins. "Such bold words for someone so small. But I'll humor you. Let's see if your strength is as impressive as your bravado."
The ghost possessing Mai wasted no time. She vanished again, a blur of motion too fast for most to track. But Yui didn't flinch. Instead, she raised her hammers and swung them in a wide arc just as Grorubas reappeared.
CLANG!
The collision was deafening, a shockwave rippling out from the point of impact. Dust and debris were blasted outward as the two forces met head-on. For the first time since her possession, Grorubas' grin faltered. Yui stood firm, her small frame unyielding even against the monstrous strength Grorubas wielded.
The ghost stepped back, her grip on the hammer tightening. "Interesting. Very interesting."
Without warning, she lunged again, her hammer descending like a meteor. Yui met it head-on, her twin hammers crossing to catch the blow. The resulting impact sent cracks spiderwebbing through the floor, but Yui didn't budge.
Jean, struggling to remain conscious, watched the clash in awe. Yui wasn't just holding her own—she was matching Grorubas blow for blow.
Bekhan, still regaining his footing, whispered a soft incantation, summoning faint motes of light to mend his wounds. "Jean, we need to back her up. She can't handle this alone."
Jean coughed, spitting blood onto the ground. "Are you seeing what I'm seeing?"
Yui pressed forward, her movements precise and deliberate. Her hammers blurred as she unleashed a relentless flurry of strikes, each one carrying the weight of her immense strength. Grorubas deflected them with growing frustration, her earlier amusement giving way to irritation.
"Enough!" the ghost snarled, slamming her hammer into the ground. A wave of black energy erupted from the point of impact, tearing through the corridor.
Yui leapt into the air, her hammers spinning as she dodged the attack. She descended with the force of a thunderbolt, her weapons crashing down onto Grorubas' shoulder. The ghost staggered, the cracks on Mai's face spreading slightly.
"You…!" Grorubas hissed, her voice trembling with rage.
Yui didn't give her a chance to recover. She swung again, her hammers moving in perfect sync. Each strike pushed Grorubas further back, the ground buckling under their feet.
Alice watched in stunned silence. She had seen Mai's strength firsthand, and yet Yui—normally so kind and gentle, was overwhelming that same power with sheer strength.
"Get. Out. Of. My. Sister!" Yui roared, punctuating each word with a devastating blow.
Grorubas snarled, her aura flaring violently. She swung her hammer in a wide arc, forcing Yui to backpedal. "You think brute force will save her? How pathetic. This body is mine now, my strength is unrivaled!"
Yui's eyes narrowed. "You're wrong. She's not yours. And I'll prove it. You can't use any of her skills."
She raised her hammers high, the faint pink glow in her eyes intensifying. The air around her seemed to shimmer as her strength surged even further, the sheer weight of her power causing the ruins to tremble.
Grorubas braced herself, her expression shifting to one of wary anticipation. "What are you-"
Yui moved faster than anyone could have anticipated. In a blur of motion, she closed the distance between them, her hammers crashing down with enough force to split the ground. Grorubas barely managed to block the strike, her knees buckling under the impact.
"You're way too damn slow, so you can't use her body as well as she can. You're barely keeping up, Sally taught us better!" Feinting with her next attack, Yui unleashed a vicious kick into Mai's midsection.
The cracks on Mai's face pulsed violently, black tendrils of energy lashing out in desperation. Yui didn't relent. She struck again and again, each blow more powerful than the last.
"Mai!" Yui shouted, her voice breaking with emotion. "I know you're still there! Fight it! Maple would never lose!"
For a moment, the cracks on Mai's face flickered, the black energy receding slightly.
Grorubas' grip on the hammer faltered. "What?!"
Yui smirked. "How do you think maple would feel, if she found out?"
The cracks flickered again, much to Grorubas's annoyance. "You-" the flickering was enough to distract him, allowing one of Yui's strikes to land squarely on her jaw.
BOOM!
Mai smashed through three of the dungeon walls before sliding to a stop.
Yui rushed after her, slowing down after leaping over the rubble. She frowned when she arrived.
Mai was back on her feet, looking pristine and unhurt. "You're right, I don't really know how to use this body as well as the original." She chuckled. "All I have to do is consume her soul and absorb her memories. I usually don't do this, since there's a chance that the memories may rub off on me but right now I don't care."
Yui charged again but was too slow as Mai erupted in an explosion of black mist, sending her careening backwards.
Using the momentary lapse in attacks, Grorubas activated his soul skill.

At first, it was chaos—a swirling maelstrom of fragmented images and emotions. But slowly, they coalesced into something more coherent. Grorubas expected to see despair, pain, and vulnerability. Instead, what unfolded before him was something entirely different.
He found himself standing in an otherworldly arena, vast and sprawling, where vibrant landscapes seemed to defy the laws of reality. Towering before him was a monstrous hydra, its three heads snapping and roaring with an unearthly rage. Its scales shimmered like gemstones, each head exuding a deadly aura of venom, fire, and frost. The beast lunged forward, but before it could strike, a figure clad in shimmering black armor appeared, a girl wielding a monstrous shield and exuding an aura of unshakable calm.
With laughable ease, the girl retrained the hydra, before calling out to them, 'her' and her sister, who with a single, devastating blow from their hammers the hydra's heads were obliterated, the beast collapsing into a pile of dissolving pixels.
Grorubas staggered within the memory, his ethereal form flickering. "What... what is this?"
The scene shifted abruptly. Now, the girl stood atop a massive castle wall, an army of grotesque monsters swarming toward her. Each creature radiated the kind of power that could rival gods. Yet, one by one, they fell. Not to an army. Not to a coordinated defense. But to balls of iron. All she and her sister did was throw balls of iron.
"Impossible," Grorubas muttered, his voice echoing within the memory. He felt a twinge of unease.
More memories surged forward. Battles against towering titans with weapons the size of mountains. Fights against eldritch horrors whose very presence twisted reality. And always, always, the girl, Mai, emerged victorious.
It was frightening, to think he had possessed such a creature.
And then, finally, he saw it.
Deep within the labyrinth of chaos, past the towering walls of her memories, lay a shimmering light. It wasn't overwhelming or blinding, but it was steady, warm, and resolute.
Mai's soul.
It glowed with an iridescent brilliance, a kaleidoscope of emotions and memories intertwined. But there was something else—something Grorubas hadn't expected.
An assuming thread was connected to the soul, extending into the darkness. Without even meaning to, Grorubas found himself following the thread, trying to see where it led.
The thread seemed to stretch endlessly, and Grorubas hesitated, his incorporeal form flickering as unease gnawed at him. But something ahead caught his attention, a faint red glow, pulsing softly in the abyss. He moved closer, curiosity overriding caution.
The moment the light washed over him, dread struck like a hammer. The glow wasn't comforting; it was suffocating. Grorubas froze as the oppressive presence crushed down on him, immobilizing his form. The red light swayed, almost lazily, as if pleased by something.
"I need to leave," Grorubas whispered, his incorporeal voice trembling. Slowly, painstakingly, he began retreating, willing his form to drift back into the shadows.
The light stopped.
Grorubas' form flickered violently as panic surged through him. It had noticed. The oppressive force doubled, then tripled, pressing in from all sides. He couldn't move, could barely think, as the crushing weight of the red light bore down on him.
In the silence, a low, almost playful hum resonated, reverberating through the void. The light pulsed again, brighter, closer, drowning out all other sensations.
Grorubas felt his essence unraveling. There was no escape. No retreat. Only annihilation.
Movement was impossible, and he could do nothing but be crushed to nothingness.

Maple finally made her way out of the forest. "Oh man, I still haven't found the people who've been stealing from us. Maybe I should go back. I'm sure that -"
She froze, looking around for a while. Eventually she found nothing. "Huh. It felt like someone was watching me just now. Am I tired?"
She placed a hand on her forehead. "Falling sick maybe? I'll go meet Sally."
She continued on her way, oblivious of the sorry soul who had stared into the abyss that was her power.

Back in the dungeon, Yui opened her eyes, with the black mist gone. She was hearing sobbing noises from within the crater that Mai had been when she exploded.
Making her way to the portal, she saw a crying Mai, who turned to her. "Yui." Her voice trembled. "I'm so sorry!" She cried, even as Yui rushed in to hug her.
