The Root ninja who had just been taught a harsh lesson by Sasuke Uchiha appeared visibly angered, and prepared to retaliate on the spot.

Just when Sasuke thought a full-scale confrontation was inevitable, a white-haired jōnin wearing Konoha's standard green flak jacket suddenly dropped down in front of him.

"Under whose authority do you execute your own comrades? This is a direct order from the Hokage. Uzumaki Karin is officially recognized as a citizen of Konohagakure. The accusations you made are baseless." Hatake Kakashi's calm voice rang out as he held up an official decree, stamped with the Fire Daimyō's seal and the Hokage's insignia, for the surrounding Anbu to see.

Originally, Kakashi had been planning to intervene only if necessary. After Sasuke's outburst earlier, he realized the situation might spiral quickly and decided to act. His current appearance was no accident—Minato Namikaze had long tasked him with safeguarding Sasuke in case Danzo's Root moved against him due to his unique powers. Contingencies had been established well in advance.

Despite Kakashi's intervention, the dozen Root operatives glanced among each other, then disregarded his warning and attacked Sasuke without hesitation.

A barrage of kunai and shuriken rained down toward Sasuke.

"Tch. I knew this would be a mess. Earth Release: Earth-Style Wall." Kakashi muttered as he quickly performed a series of hand seals and slammed his palms into the ground. A massive wall of hardened earth rose, shielding both him and Sasuke.

Sounds of fierce combat echoed just beyond the wall—sharp impacts, groans, and jutsu flares.

Sasuke understood almost immediately. Kakashi being here had to be Minato's doing. As for why his older brother Itachi hadn't come instead—it was probably because they feared Itachi would lose control and slaughter all of Root in retaliation.

After nearly ten minutes, the earthen barrier crumbled. Kakashi brushed back his silver hair casually as he approached Sasuke. Around them, all twelve Root members were unconscious or incapacitated on the ground.

"Let's go. I'll escort you back," Kakashi said simply.

"When did you arrive?" Sasuke asked, still analyzing the situation.

"Since the moment you said 'rat'—you weren't exactly subtle," Kakashi replied with his usual dry tone.

Sasuke looked a bit awkward. He hadn't meant to insult Kakashi earlier, but the phrase had been a bit of a verbal minefield.

"Ahem. I wasn't referring to you."

"No need to clarify. But let me ask you something—did you challenge them out of confidence, or because you're itching for a beating? Those were a dozen trained operatives, at least Chūnin-level. Even with your kekkei genkai and your... other talents, fighting that many alone would've been suicide." Kakashi's voice remained neutral, but there was a clear undertone of disapproval.

Sasuke was mildly surprised. Kakashi had accurately pinpointed the flaw in his logic. But unlike the immature arrogance of his past, Sasuke's confidence now came from true strength—not just ego.

"You're free to think whatever you want," Sasuke replied, coolly. "But... thank you for the backup."

Kakashi said nothing more and accompanied the two of them back to the Uchiha District.

Although the Uchiha clan's image had somewhat improved since the Fourth Hokage's tenure, their physical position in the village hierarchy remained unchanged. The elders of Konoha still resisted giving the Uchiha greater autonomy or moving them back to the village center. Other clans, fearing Uchiha dominance, opposed it as well.

But Sasuke didn't mind. The clan compound's remote location offered solitude—perfect for uninterrupted training and meditation.

"Goodbye, Kakashi-sensei," Sasuke said at the district gate, waving slightly.

Kakashi responded with a nod, then vanished in a flicker of shunshin.

As he watched Kakashi disappear, Sasuke found his mind drifting to someone he hadn't thought about in a while—Uchiha Obito.

Since the chaos at Kirigakure, there had been no rumors involving Obito. Sasuke had long feared that Obito, like in the original timeline, might try to use his younger brother Itachi or target Konoha teams to push his agenda.

That fear led him to constantly warn Itachi against taking missions outside the village. Itachi, misinterpreting his concern, assumed Sasuke was just trying to cling to him.

Thankfully, nothing tragic had occurred. Sasuke speculated that Minato's continued survival acted as a deterrent. Obito wouldn't risk engaging with the Yellow Flash.

What's the current state of the Akatsuki anyway? Sasuke wondered. Then, shaking his head, he dismissed the thought. Power. Power is the only thing that matters.

He turned his gaze away from the street and walked back home with Karin.

Following their return, Karin moved into the house adjacent to Sasuke's—just as planned. She was now his next-door neighbor and had been formally assigned to Team Eleven. Though she had forfeited her right to participate in the Chūnin Exams this year, she was officially a genin now. As was Sasuke.

Fugaku had been pleased to learn that Sasuke had brought back a fellow Uzumaki, but his enthusiasm faded once he realized Sasuke regarded her only as a younger sister.

Still a long road ahead to restoring the Uchiha clan, Fugaku thought.

During the exam interlude, Sasuke kept a low profile. Most of his time was devoted to mastering Senbonzakura's Bankai. A significant milestone had been reached: he could now physically interact with the spiritual form of Senbonzakura's attire. Though a small step, it signaled real progress—and to Sasuke, it meant that full Bankai was within reach.

---

Two weeks later, the Chūnin Exams resumed as scheduled. All five major Hidden Villages had gathered in Konoha.

At the topmost spectator platform of the arena, the five Kage sat in their designated seats. Konoha's delegation led the display with Minato Namikaze, seated prominently beside Hiruzen Sarutobi, Jiraiya, Uchiha Fugaku, and Hyūga Hiashi. Konoha's elite had assembled in full force.

Behind Minato stood Shisui Uchiha and Nara Shikaku, observing silently.

The other villages brought smaller entourages.

From Kumogakure, Fourth Raikage A was present, flanked by Darui and C, his most trusted subordinates.

From Kirigakure, the new Fifth Mizukage Terumi Mei had arrived, accompanied by Ao and—unexpectedly—Zabuza Momochi, who now bore a distinctive eye-patch over one eye. How the Demon of the Mist ended up as her guard remained a mystery.

Truthfully, Terumi Mei was striking. Her crimson hair, low-cut deep blue kimono-like dress, exposed shoulders, and mesh armor hinted at both beauty and lethality. Her appearance was on par with Tsunade's—so much so that Sasuke couldn't help but glance twice.

From Iwagakure, Third Tsuchikage Ōnoki took his place, supported by Kurotsuchi and Akatsuchi.

And from Sunagakure, Fourth Kazekage Rasa attended, standing alongside Chiyo and Ebizō. Had Rasa not ordered Ye Cang's assassination, Sunagakure might not still rely so heavily on its aging war veterans.

"Fourth Hokage, do you always bring your entire war council just to watch a match?" Ōnoki grumbled, peering suspiciously at Minato. "You planning something?"
