Chapter 47: Chapter 47: I Alone Am Enough
A cloud like black smoke drifted in front of the moon, obscuring it. In an instant, the entire world seemed to plunge into darkness.
The forest under the night was pitch black. During the day, sunlight would stream in through the gaps between the trees, but now, all one could see were masses of darkness, as if some terrifying monster was hiding in the depths, waiting for travelers to fall into its trap. The night wind blew through the forest, rustling the leaves with a swishing sound.
But if it were an experienced hunter or a resident familiar with the surroundings, they would immediately hear that there was too much abnormality in the rustling of the leaves mixed in with the wind. It was not the sound of leaves being blown by the wind, but rather something moving and leaping between the trees, causing the trees to make an unnatural sound due to an external force.
Swoosh—
Swoosh—
Swoosh—
Something cut through the dead silence of the dark forest—it was spirit particle arrows glowing with a faint blue light!! Dozens of spirit particle arrows came like rain, and on the receiving end were beings in black robes, holding blades, and crowned with the name of 'god'! They swung their blades to cut down the incoming spirit arrows, but there were also Shinigami who were hit due to carelessness or lack of strength. But no one, no matter who, let out a shameful scream from being hit.
Suddenly, a rhythmic sound rang out, and from among the Shinigami whose advance had been slowed by the spirit arrows, a figure leaped out!! This figure moved through the trees at an extremely fast speed, launching a swift and ghostly assault towards the direction from which the arrows came!
The spirit arrows became more numerous again. The Quincy who fired them seemed to realize that danger was imminent, and tried to stop this figure rushing towards them at all costs. But their movements and the arrows they fired were not so much slow as they were predicted before they were even fired, causing them to be unable to keep up with the rhythm.
Far more spirit arrows were fired than before, but these arrows could only land behind the ghostly moving figure, embedding themselves in the ground or tree trunks.
Finally, the distance between them was crossed in a few blinks of an eye. By the time they noticed, the Shinigami holding the ridiculously long blade, who by rights should not be able to fight in a forest because he couldn't swing his blade, was already right in front of them! There wasn't even a gap to use Hirenkyaku to move.
And by the time they heard a crisp "ding—" in their ears, it was all too late!!
In the dim forest, what could be seen was a sudden flash of silver light! The silver flashes appeared in large, dense clusters, instantly covering an entire area. It wasn't just a matter of whether the light was blinding; when the flashes suddenly appeared, almost all the Shinigami who had been rushing towards this area immediately stopped their advance and quickly retreated, leaving the area covered by the silver flashes.
The targeted Quincy, however, did not have such composure. The thirty-odd Quincy hiding in the forest, taking advantage of their ability to fire spirit arrows from a distance, were all cut in half at the waist at the same instant!! Shrill screams and gushing blood were extinguished by the dazzling and beautiful silver flowers of light.
Not only that, but the trees within the range also suffered, their trunks also being severed! The heavy roar of trees falling and colliding one after another seemed to shake the entire forest!!
Even the warriors of Squad 11, who were all called madmen even within the Gotei 13, could only stand there dumbfounded, watching what was happening before them, forgetting that they were still in a battle.
A flash!
That was the only word they could use to describe the scene they saw. The battle ended too quickly. When he descended, the battle was over in an instant.
In the sky, the cloud that had obscured the moon like black smoke was blown away, and the moon, its light no longer blocked, once again sprinkled its light upon the earth. The trees in one part of the forest had been completely cut down, and without the canopy to block the moonlight, everyone could clearly see what had happened in the center of the forest.
What should have been a nauseating scene of slaughter, for some reason, only made people feel a sense of elegant and powerful beauty. The corpses were buried under the fallen canopies, and all the sprayed blood was blocked from the man standing in the very center, holding an overly long blade. The moonlight shone on his silver-white hair and blade, yet his entire being exuded a presence that overwhelmed everything around him.
"It's over."
As if reminding these stunned warriors, the man who had shocked them actually took the initiative to look over and remind them.
"Oh, oh, oh."
Only then did these warriors come back to their senses and hurriedly respond. They probably hadn't noticed it themselves, but they, who were usually lawless and respected no one but their own captain, were now unconsciously adopting a respectful posture.
However, even though that was said, none of them sheathed their swords. The reason was simple: the battle was not over; it was still ongoing here. This was just the end of one battlefield. As proof, from a location further away, in the darkness further ahead, more spirit arrows came flying towards them!
Those spirit arrows were less like arrows and more like spirit lances!
However, even these spirit lances were intercepted by a clean slash from the silver-haired man, who turned and swung his sword before they could even fly over and cause any damage. They detonated in the night air, stirring up a strong wind and an orange glow of fire.
"I'll handle that side."
Saying so, the man turned and walked towards the direction from which the spirit lances came. But before he used his footwork, he seemed to remember something and slightly turned his head to remind the Shinigami watching his back.
"I alone am enough."
No one raised any objection to his statement. Even though these warriors, more than fighting the enemy, more than annihilating the enemy, were actually primarily aiming to enjoy the slaughter. This act of hogging all the enemies for oneself would normally be met with collective opposition, and even fists.
Unless... your power was strong enough to suppress everyone, leaving them no room to object.
When that man disappeared into the darkness in the distance, the warriors of Squad 11 let out an almost imperceptible sigh of relief.
"That guy... is he really from Squad 2?"
Someone muttered in a low voice, but because it was so quiet here, everyone heard it.
That's right. Was that guy really from the Onmitsukidō? This was the question that arose in everyone's mind. They had never seen an Onmitsukidō member who charged enemies head-on, nor had they seen one who abandoned their squad. More importantly, they had never seen an Onmitsukidō member who was more Squad 11 than the members of Squad 11 themselves.
