Chapter 17: Chapter 17: Shadows of the Elders
The tension in the Uchiha clan continued to grow. Shina, Itachi, and Shisui found themselves drawn into the web of unease that seemed to wrap around the elders like a shroud. Shina, who had always been quick to brush off serious matters, was now paying closer attention.
One evening, Shisui called the brothers to a secluded part of the training grounds. His usual playful demeanor was gone, replaced by a grim determination.
"We need to talk," Shisui began, his voice low. "I overheard something… troubling."
Shina leaned against a tree, crossing his arms. "Troubling? That's vague, even for you, Shisui."
Shisui shot him a look. "This isn't a joke, Shina. The elders are planning something big, something that involves the village leadership. They're meeting in secret, and they've stopped reporting everything to your father."
Itachi's brows furrowed. "Do you think they're preparing for a conflict?"
"That's what I'm afraid of," Shisui said. "I don't have all the details yet, but whatever it is, it could endanger the entire clan."
Shina pushed off the tree, his usual carefree expression replaced by a rare seriousness. "Alright. So what's the plan? We can't exactly march into one of their meetings and demand answers."
"We don't have to," Shisui replied. "There's another meeting tonight. I've been tracking their movements, and I know where they're gathering. We'll spy on them, gather information, and figure out what they're up to."
Itachi nodded. "If this is about the clan's safety, we can't ignore it. We'll go."
Shina grinned, his confidence returning. "A little cloak-and-dagger action, huh? Sounds fun. Count me in."
---
Later that night, the three of them moved silently through the compound, their Sharingan active to spot any potential threats. Shisui led the way, his movements precise and deliberate. They reached an old, unused meeting hall on the outskirts of the compound, where faint voices could be heard from within.
The three shinobi perched on the roof, listening intently through the cracks in the wooden beams.
"The village has never trusted us," one elder was saying. "And now, with the Hokage keeping a closer eye on our activities, we cannot afford to remain passive. We must act before they move against us."
Another elder chimed in. "The younger generation is too influenced by the village's ideals. Shina, Itachi, even Shisui—they don't understand the importance of preserving our clan's strength and independence. We need to take control before they sway the others."
Shina clenched his fists, his jaw tightening. "So that's what this is about? They think we're the problem?"
Shisui placed a hand on Shina's shoulder, signaling for silence.
A third voice spoke up. "We've already begun preparing. Our allies within the clan are ready. When the time comes, we will take the village by force if necessary."
Itachi's eyes widened slightly, though his expression remained calm. "They're planning a coup," he whispered.
Shisui nodded grimly. "This is worse than I thought."
---
As the meeting concluded and the elders dispersed, the trio retreated to a safe distance to discuss what they had heard.
"This isn't just about the clan anymore," Shisui said, his tone urgent. "If they go through with this, it'll lead to war. The village won't let us get away with something like this."
Itachi's gaze was distant, his mind racing. "We need to stop them. But how? If we confront them directly, it could fracture the clan even further."
Shina exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair. "So what do we do? Sit back and hope they change their minds? That's not exactly a solid plan."
Shisui shook his head. "We need to act carefully. I'll try to gather more information, see if there's a way to talk them down. In the meantime, we can't let anyone know what we've discovered—not even your father."
Shina looked skeptical. "Not even Dad? He deserves to know what's going on."
"It's too risky," Shisui said. "If the elders find out we're onto them, it could escalate things even faster."
Itachi nodded reluctantly. "Shisui's right. For now, we gather information and prepare for whatever comes next."
Shina sighed, his hands on his hips. "Alright. But if things get out of hand, we're not sitting on the sidelines. Agreed?"
"Agreed," Shisui and Itachi said in unison.
