Between Your Letter and My Reply

Chapter 98

Chapter 98

Damian pressed him with a sharp tone, but Casey seemed genuinely clueless.

“Wait. What do you mean by ‘like’? Like in what way?”

“Uh… I think she meant romantically…”

“How would she know if she had someone she liked during the two years she can’t remember?”

“She said there are things she does when she has someone she likes, and there’s evidence that she did those things.”

“…What are those things?”

“How would I know? Could it be that guy, Glenn?”

“Lily liked Glenn…?”

Casey’s face twisted into an even more comical expression. He said to Damian in confusion,

“Look, I’m not very good at reading human emotions.”

“I know.”

“So I might be misunderstanding things.”

“But.”

“But I swear on my name, it’s definitely not Glenn.”

“…It’s not?”

“It’s not.”

“How do you know?”

“Humans try to do more for the people they like, don’t they? Or give them special treatment? But Lily treated Glenn the same as me.”

“What do you mean by ‘the same’?”

“You would understand if you had siblings… The relationship between sisters, brothers, brother and sister, or sister and brother is one of constant struggle for dominance.”

Damian had a hard time understanding Casey’s words.

Why would they fight for dominance if there’s no inheritance involved? Isn’t it already decided by age? And if they’re family… shouldn’t they be affectionate? Why would they fight?

I’ve defied Paul, but I’ve never thought about dominating him.

While Damian was lost in thought, Casey shook his head firmly.

“In that sense, Glenn is not someone Lily likes romantically.”

“Then who is it?”

“How would I know? The only men Lily interacted with were the village men, Glenn, me, and Father. There’s no one among them she would like…”

Casey tilted his head.

“No, no. Anyway, Lilliana is convinced that there’s someone she likes. Are you really telling me you have no idea?”

“I said I don’t know. More importantly, why are you so curious about that?”

“As her brother, aren’t you curious why your sister likes a guy who never once visited her while she was alone in a hospital bed with no memories?”

“Ah.”

Casey’s face lit up with realization. He opened his eyes wide with a fierce look for a moment, then shook his head with an innocent expression.

“Still, I really don’t know.”

“…Okay, I understand.”

“So, are you done with your questions?”

“No.”

Casey made a tired face as he watched Damian shift his position.

This guy is relentless. Even interrogating a prisoner wouldn’t be this bad. Doesn’t he even think about drinking some water while he’s at it?

“What were you doing while Lilliana was in the hospital?”

Casey replied with a bright smile at Damian’s question,

“I was busy catching and killing the remnants who were chasing us.”

“Catching… what?”

Damian doubted his ears for a moment.

“No, they kept appearing. So I got annoyed and killed them, but even after killing them, I kept seeing those guys lingering around us, so I had to take care of them…”

Damian was a little taken aback by his tone, which sounded like he was complaining about having to clean the bathroom and finding mold everywhere.

He was also a man who had killed people, but it wasn’t common to see someone boasting about their exploits with such a cheerful face.

But Damian was also a former soldier. He regained his composure and asked,

“Why didn’t you do that earlier? If you could handle them like that, you could have done it before you went into hiding in Edenfallen.”

“Father and Lily wouldn’t let me. And neither would Pascal.”

“Why?”

“The people around me wouldn’t let me kill anyone.”

“Well, it is illegal in many ways…”

“That’s part of it, but I guess the others thought I shouldn’t take human life too lightly. It’s dangerous in many ways if I become comfortable with killing.”

Damian, a former soldier, nodded in agreement. It was somewhat similar to his current situation.

The first question he asked Pascal when she requested him to guard Lilliana was whether he could kill the opponent. But there was no merit in getting used to such things.

So it was natural for them to be wary of Casey, who was already a bit detached from human emotions, becoming disrespectful of life.

Casey said, narrowing his eyes slightly,

“So I couldn’t do it until now. But now there’s no one to stop me. Father is gone, Pascal is asleep, and Lily has lost her memory. And there’s no one who can control this situation.”

It was a response that didn’t suit his glassy, transparent eyes.

“So until Pascal fell asleep, I kept in touch and monitored their movements, and now that those who were hindering me are gone, I did as I pleased. I’ll do anything to protect Lily.”

Damian rubbed his face with his left hand and asked,

“What about cleaning up afterward? It’ll be troublesome if the police get involved while we’re already being chased by Sigmund Sutton.”

“Don’t worry about that. I don’t leave any evidence,”

Casey said with a grin.

“There’s nothing better than fire to get rid of evidence. All things are equal in front of fire, turning into a handful of ash.”

Although he was a little uneasy about whether Casey had really cleaned up thoroughly, Damian started thinking about other problems.

“So, the reason why nothing happened to us so far wasn’t because it was peaceful, but because you…”

“Yes. I killed them all from the shadows. They don’t know Lily’s current whereabouts. But I can’t just stand by and watch when they keep sending people.”

“Tsk, it’s only a matter of time before they find us.”

The fact that it wasn’t unnecessary for Damian to give Lilliana a gun and wrap her in protective magic made him even more uneasy. Damian pulled his chair closer to Casey and lowered his voice.

“Tell me more. What kind of guys exactly…”

Just as he was about to get some information from Casey, the door rattled with an angry banging. Both of them were startled and jumped to their feet.

“Brother! Damian! You’re not doing anything weird, are you?! What are you doing with the door locked?!”

Lilliana’s voice, filled with annoyance, could be heard from outside.

“Ah, it’s nothing!”

Damian reflexively made an excuse, but it didn’t explain the current situation.

Casey, noticing Damian’s hesitation, opened the door slightly. As soon as Lilliana saw the gap in the door, she pushed it open and entered.

She looked at Damian and Casey in turn and said,

“What were you two doing?”

“We were just talking.”

“Yes, we had something to discuss, so we were talking for a while…”

“It’s been three hours.”

Casey and Damian simultaneously looked at the clock on the wall. They thought they had entered the room at 8 o’clock, but as Lilliana said, it was 11 o’clock at night.

“Oh, I didn’t realize we were talking for so long…”

“What were you talking about for so long?”

“…”

When Casey closed his mouth, Lilliana’s gaze shifted to Damian. Damian opened and closed his mouth, then tried to smooth things over with a laugh.

“We had something to talk about. We weren’t fighting or anything, Lilliana.”

“So what was it about? What were you talking about without me? You two practically just met today, didn’t you? What could you possibly have to talk about for so long…”

As Lilliana pressed him with questions, Damian wanted to close his mouth like Casey.

“Anyway, you’re not going to tell me?”

“No.”

“Yes.”

Lilliana had to hold the back of her neck for a moment because they both answered in the affirmative almost simultaneously. While Lilliana was dumbfounded, Damian quickly stood beside her.

“You said you had something to talk to Casey about, right, Lilliana? Go ahead.”
