Chapter 6: Chapter Six
The dinner had been everything Scarlett had feared and more. Elias had a way of drawing her in, making her feel as though she were the only woman in the world. The conversation flowed effortlessly, and every laugh, every glance exchanged, pulled her deeper into his orbit. But the tension between them was palpable thick, undeniable.
After dinner, Elias had insisted on taking her to his penthouse, a lavish space that matched his persona elegant, sleek, and a little too perfect. Scarlett felt out of place the moment she stepped inside, like a visitor in a world that wasn't hers. Yet, Elias seemed to want her there, his presence like a warm weight at her back.
"Make yourself comfortable," Elias said as he led her into the living room, his voice smooth as velvet. He gestured to the plush sofa, but Scarlett couldn't help feeling like a bird in a gilded cage.
"I'll be fine," she replied, forcing a smile.
She glanced around the room, her fingers absently tracing the edge of her glass of wine. The entire place exuded wealth luxury at every turn. It was the kind of place people only dreamed about. A world she had never imagined herself stepping into, let alone becoming a part of.
Elias leaned against the bar, watching her with those piercing eyes that seemed to read her every thought. "You seem distracted."
Scarlett shifted her gaze to him, meeting his eyes with a mix of defiance and curiosity. "It's hard not to be."
He smirked. "I get that a lot." He took a step toward her, the atmosphere around them thick with something unspoken.
"I should go," Scarlett said quickly, the weight of the evening finally hitting her. "This is too much."
Elias reached out, gently grabbing her wrist before she could turn away. His touch was firm but not aggressive deliberate, commanding. She looked up at him, her pulse skipping at the intensity of his gaze.
"Too much?" he asked, his voice low and serious. "You haven't even begun to see what's possible."
Scarlett swallowed hard. The way he said it, the way he looked at her it made her feel as though she were teetering on the edge of something dangerous. Something she wasn't sure she was ready for.
"I didn't ask for any of this," she said quietly, though the words felt weak in the face of his unwavering gaze.
Elias stepped closer, his presence overwhelming. He placed his free hand on her shoulder, his thumb gently caressing the skin there. "I know you didn't, but I can't help that I want you."
Scarlett's heart raced as she looked up at him, torn between the desire to resist and the undeniable pull she felt toward him. The lines between right and wrong, between control and surrender, were growing increasingly blurred.
"I'm not the kind of woman you think I am," she whispered, her voice shaky but resolute.
"I don't want you to be anyone else, Scarlett," Elias replied softly. "I just want you."
There was a sincerity in his voice that stopped her in her tracks. It wasn't just desire it was something more, something deeper. Something she hadn't been prepared for.
Elias gently cupped her face, his thumb brushing over her lips in a way that made her breath hitch. She could feel the tension between them, the electricity crackling in the space. She couldn't deny the pull any longer.
Before she could say anything, Elias kissed her.
The kiss was different from the one at dinner it was slower, more deliberate, as though he was savoring every second of it. Scarlett's heart raced as she found herself responding, her body betraying her with every touch, every kiss.
It was dangerous. She knew that. But in that moment, she didn't care.
Elias pulled away, his forehead resting against hers. "You feel it too," he murmured. "You can't pretend you don't."
Scarlett closed her eyes, her breath coming in shallow gasps. She didn't know what to say. She didn't know how to explain the chaos of emotions coursing through her. All she knew was that Elias Monroe had become a force she couldn't ignore.
"I'm not going anywhere," he said, his voice hushed, as though he was speaking a promise. "And neither are you."
Scarlett opened her eyes, meeting his gaze with a mixture of fear and anticipation. The lines had been crossed, and there was no going back now.
Scarlett's mind raced as Elias's words echoed in her head. "Neither are you." The weight of his promise hung between them, thick and suffocating, like the heavy velvet curtains that draped the windows behind them.
Her thoughts scrambled, trying to process everything that had just happened. One kiss one touch had blurred the boundaries she had so carefully constructed between herself and Elias. And yet, despite every warning in her mind, there was a part of her that didn't want to pull away.
He was still close, too close, his body radiating heat as if the space between them no longer existed. His thumb grazed her lower lip, a soft caress that made her body tighten, as if it knew what her mind couldn't decide.
"You're not like anyone else I've met, Scarlett," Elias said, his voice a low growl, as though the words had been pulled from him unwillingly.
Scarlett's breath caught in her throat. His words were dangerous, dangerously close to a confession, and she wasn't sure how to respond. "Why are you doing this?" she whispered, her voice fragile, as though the mere act of asking would somehow break her.
Elias took a deep breath, his gaze intense and searching. "Because I want you, Scarlett. More than I ever thought I would. More than I ever should." He paused, then stepped back slightly, allowing her some space. "But this isn't just about wanting you. I think... I think it's about needing you."
The words made Scarlett's heart race, her thoughts spinning in a blur of confusion and desire. Was this really happening? Was she truly standing here, in this lavish penthouse, facing the one man who could destroy everything she had worked so hard to protect?
Her hands shook slightly as she clasped them together, trying to steady herself. "I'm not some... prize for you to win, Elias. I'm not some... conquest."
Elias's eyes softened, and he took a step toward her again, his gaze unwavering. "I know that, Scarlett. I'm not trying to conquer you." His voice was steady, almost tender. "But I want you, and I'm not going to pretend I don't."
A tremor ran through Scarlett's body at the vulnerability she saw in his eyes. Elias, the powerful billionaire who seemed to have everything under control, was admitting something she hadn't expected. She didn't know what to do with it.
Elias reached for her hand, his grip firm yet gentle as he pulled her closer. "You don't have to have it all figured out right now. I won't rush you. But I won't let you go either."
Scarlett's breath hitched in her throat. The promise in his words made her pulse quicken, but the hesitation in her heart made her question everything. "I don't know if I can trust you."
Elias's hand cupped her cheek, his thumb tracing her jawline with a tenderness that contrasted with the intensity of his words. "You don't have to trust me yet. But I'm asking you to let me show you that I'm not the monster you think I am."
Scarlett's eyes fluttered closed for a brief moment, and when she opened them again, Elias was still there, his presence overwhelming and undeniable. She could feel the magnetism between them this pull, this attraction, this undeniable force that threatened to consume her.
"I've never been this out of control," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "And I'm scared."
"I know," Elias whispered back, his lips brushing against her forehead. "I'm scared too."
It was the honesty in his words that unsettled her. The man who had built empires, who controlled everything around him, was admitting fear to her. It made her wonder if there was more to Elias Monroe than the cold exterior he showed to the world.
Before she could think further, Elias leaned in and kissed her again. It wasn't the heated kiss from earlier, the one filled with raw desire it was softer, deeper, as though he was trying to convey something that words couldn't express. Scarlett melted into it, her defenses weakening with each passing second.
When they finally broke apart, breathless and tangled in each other, Elias rested his forehead against hers. "I know you're scared, Scarlett. But I'm not going anywhere."
She didn't have the words to respond, because deep down, a part of her didn't want him to leave.
But another part of her knew the danger of getting too close.
