The battle of Bhima Koregaon in 1818 was a fierce battle between the Peshwas and the Mahar (Dalit) community. This incident is known as a saga of heroism and resistance in the history of Maharashtra.

The place where this battle took place is in Bhima Koregaon (Kherda taluka, Pune district).

The time was January 1, 1818, a bitterly cold night. 500 Mahars had no clothes on their bodies.

500 warriors of the Mahar community who, with the help of the British, attacked the Peshwas. Peshwa Bajirao had 28,000 soldiers in his army. These 28000 soldiers were cut down like radishes by 500 Mahars. Seeing this scene, Peshwa Bajirao fled in fear.

The reason for this war was that for thousands of years, Brahmins had been atrocities on countless people like Mahars.

Brahmins, Peshwas had numerous reasons like caste atrocities on the Mahar community such as water, ban on temple entry, physical abuse of women, ban on living in villages etc.

Mahars challenged the Peshwa Brahmins in the presence of the British East India Company.

The Mahars adopted the gorilla warfare method (ramp attack) and surrounded the army of the Peshwa Brahmins.

Taking advantage of the dark night, the Mahars suddenly attacked the Peshwa (Brahmin) soldiers.

500 Mahar warriors cut 28,000 Peshwa (Brahmin) soldiers like radishes, defeated them in this way.

Peshwa Bajirao fled and surrendered to the British.

This battle marked the beginning of the end of the Brahmin Empire.

It has historical significance. This battle is a symbol of Dalit heroism. The Mahar community fought armed resistance against caste oppression.

Fall of the Peshwas After this battle, the British defeated the Peshwas in 1818 and ended the Peshwa rule.

It is still remembered today; this incident is remembered as the Mahar-Peshwa War in Maharashtra.

According to British documents, the Peshwa army was very weak and the Mahars surrounded them. Therefore, 28,000 Peshwas were killed.

Today, the memory of Bhima Koregaon is celebrated in Maharashtra as **Dalit Gaurav Din**.
