Chapter 432: Chapter 433: Nearly Ten Billion
Valentine realized he had fallen into a trap carefully laid by his opponent, and the person most likely responsible was William. However, he couldn't understand how William managed to gain control of his base's main server, the group's servers, and even the eight satellites.
Before activating them, the base's servers weren't even connected to any external network. This thought sent Valentine into a panic, as he considered the possibility that there was a mole among his ranks, and this person would have to be in a very high position.
Valentine suspected various people but couldn't figure out who it might be. He had lost control of the base, as well as the control chips implanted in his subordinates. Without those chips, Valentine suddenly realized he was incapable of accomplishing anything.
Even his plan to take down all the users of his company's phones in a final, devastating move was now impossible. The only thing that gave Valentine and the people in the base some relief was that the power and water supply systems were still operational, and with the stored food, they could survive for now.
Day by day, Valentine lived in torment and regret. He watched on television as England became the first country to declare Valentine's Group an illegal organization, and from there, his business empire began to collapse.
In the following days, other countries that had received videos also conducted their own experiments and subsequently declared his group a terrorist organization, banning all its commercial activities.
It took only two weeks for his company's market value to plummet from its peak of $130 billion to bankruptcy and liquidation. Richmond Valentine had gone from being a globally celebrated genius in business and technology to a fugitive, someone despised by all, and a fool who overestimated himself by trying to challenge the entire communications industry.
This struggle, filled with unspoken anguish, inner conflict, and pain, haunted him constantly. By the time Valentine Group officially filed for bankruptcy and all of its communication and network services were shut down, Richmond Valentine knew he had lost completely. He had lost without any chance of retaliation, and worst of all, he didn't even know how or why.
Driven mad by the outcome, Valentine, already a paranoid and obsessive man, decided to destroy the base himself to prevent William from gaining full control of it.
But as soon as he started executing his plan, the base's ventilation system began releasing anesthetic gas, shattering his hopes once again, all due to William's constant surveillance of the base.
Had Valentine chosen to destroy the base from the beginning, William would have had no choice but to go there personally to clean up the mess. After all, it wasn't easy to prepare enough anesthetic gas to knock out everyone in the base within just a few days.
William had deliberately left the base alone to avoid pushing them into a desperate, suicidal move. But after ten days of preparation, William, who had initially thought of leaving them locked in for months or even a year, forcing them to go insane and fight amongst themselves, now decided to take action. In William's eyes, a fully intact base was simply too valuable.
"SIR, everyone in the Yellowstone base is now unconscious. You can take it over completely."
William, who had returned to his London estate and was having dinner with his mother, heard Sunday's voice in his ear. "Hmm, dealing with these people really is a hassle," William remarked.
After thinking for a moment, William said, "Kill Valentine, Paula, and the other leaders. As for the rest, handle them as you see fit. The only condition is that the base's secrets must not be leaked, but don't just kill them all. I can't bring myself to kill people who are incapable of fighting back."
"Don't worry, SIR. I've investigated the Kingsman organization as you requested, and they have a memory-wiping device that could be useful, though there may be some side effects with deep memory wipes."
"Haha, I'm not too concerned about side effects. Not killing them is already merciful enough. Wipe their memories and throw them to the U.S. government. Let them deal with it. Most of these lunatics are Americans anyway, and they've all had chips implanted."
"Understood, SIR."
After finishing dinner, William went to his basement, opened a portal, and returned to the castle. He opened another portal to the Yellowstone base and sent a batch of cleaning robots and two Mark III suits of armor. From there, the rest was out of his hands.
He went back upstairs to join his mother in the living room to watch a football game and chat. William hadn't disclosed any specifics about the crisis to the public, and no one had gone on a rampage, so although there were some fluctuations in the stock market, they didn't affect people's daily lives. For the people of England, it was business as usual: watching football, drinking beer, and occasionally cursing at the government and telecom companies.
Since Richmond Valentine had disappeared from the start, and with Valentine Group now bankrupt, their fixed assets awaited auction. The public, having enjoyed the perks of free calls and internet, was not happy about returning to the old ways. Not only had internet and communication fees not dropped, but they had actually increased, fueling conspiracy theories.
Many people believed that Valentine had been taken out by a collaboration between the U.S., U.K. governments, and telecom companies. Some even suspected that William was involved, given that he was the biggest winner in all of this.
Who could blame them? Over the course of three days, William had shorted Valentine Group's stock, making a profit of $10.6 billion as the stock price dropped 42%. Combined with the $900 million he had earned earlier, his total profit was $11.5 billion. Even after paying a 20% capital gains tax, his net profit was still $9.2 billion.
Earning such a huge sum in just a few days, it was no wonder conspiracy theorists were suspicious. That's why, after returning to London, William stayed in his estate, remotely managing the aftermath without going anywhere.
Where there were people who hated him, there were also those who adored him. Telecom companies and internet service providers around the world now practically worshiped William. Not only had he saved them from ruin, but he had also helped them make money in the futures market.
As the market fluctuated and telecom stocks generally plummeted, William saw an opportunity to invest in some major national telecom companies. However, capitalists once again showed him that profit was their only concern, not sentiment. The moment William made any moves in the stock market, these companies, already on edge, immediately put up defenses against him. Not only did they have no gratitude, but they also saw William, with his over $10 billion in cash, as a serious threat.
Some high-level officials in various countries even discreetly hinted to William that they weren't keen on him buying stakes in their national telecom companies.
Catherine, in a phone call with William, subtly reminded him that during such chaotic times, any further moves could lead to all major Western countries monitoring him. If he caused more market turbulence, he might even be declared persona non grata.
William understood that with government intervention, there was no point in pushing further. Telecom companies were closely monitored by governments, and as an Englishman, he had no chance of gaining absolute control.
After watching the football game with Lena, William received a report from Sunday at 10 p.m. confirming that Richmond Valentine, Paula, and the other leaders had been dealt with. It would take a few more days to completely clean out the base.
