Chapter 5: Eye Contact
Bai Li turned off the car and hid in a small alley.
The ground trembled with a rumbling sound as giants searched for escaping vehicles.
Xu Shixiong leaned back on the seat and asked, "Are we the only ones left?"
"At least I haven't seen anyone else," Bai Li replied gloomily. She knew that hiding here wasn't a solution; sooner or later, the giants would find them. The evacuation time set by the higher-ups was approaching, and they had to reach Kamakura City on time.
Fushan sighed, "My PIRS is destroyed."
"Maybe there are survivors," Bai Li sighed, gazing at the crescent moon in the sky.
In just a few hours, the great prison walls had been breached, giants were killing everywhere, and Kyoto was in crisis.
"What's up with that Qingqiu? You said you'd explain it to me," Xu Shixiong asked Fushan.
Fushan didn't answer. Xu Shixiong became a bit annoyed and raised his voice, "Old man, tell me!"
"Shh! Quiet!" Bai Li immediately stopped them upon hearing certain noises.
A huge, pale, bloodless face appeared from behind a building. The giant's expression was strange; unlike other giants, this face had an extra pair of blood-red eyes. The terrifying eyeballs spun around, and the giant looked around. The car in the depths of the alley caught its attention.
"Type A giant, this is bad!" Fushan said with a terrified expression.
Xu Shixiong wisely kept silent and crouched down, fearing being seen by the giant.
The giant's head leaned over, just ten steps away from the car. Xu Shixiong was so scared he didn't move. Bai Li trembled slightly. The giant's eyes met Xu Shixiong's through the windshield.
Those were deep red eyes. When Xu Shixiong made eye contact, it felt like falling into an endless red ocean.
The giant noticed Xu Shixiong. Its nose exhaled, and a white mist shot out from its nostrils. Strangely, the giant didn't act; instead, it retracted its head and slowly disappeared under the building.
The giant left.
Xu Shixiong was sweating profusely. He nervously said, "I'm sure it saw me."
Bai Li also took a deep breath. She had noticed the giant's strangeness. Fushan said from the back seat, "PIRS classifies giants into three levels: A, B, and C, each with levels 1 to 10, based on their height and intelligence. The one that just appeared was obviously a Type A giant—tall, with eyes, and independent behavior. Type A giants are rare. I didn't expect we'd encounter one."
"But why did it look at us and leave?" Xu Shixiong was still confused.
"Maybe they don't use their eyes to see?" Bai Li speculated.
Fushan waved his hand. "Type A giants have sensitive organs. They can definitely see us."
The car fell into silence. The giant could have easily killed them with a slap, but it didn't.
"Forget it. The most important thing now is to leave!" Bai Li started the car. Just as the engine roared to life, a howling sound came from somewhere.
"Another giant is coming. This time, we won't be so lucky!" Fushan shouted nervously. Nearby, a building collapsed with a rumble, and three giants stood at the alley entrance, with a pile of rubble and smoke behind them.
"It's over." Bai Li knew they couldn't escape the giant's encirclement.
"Could it be that the giant just now didn't want to act personally and called its subordinates?" Xu Shixiong speculated.
"That's too sentimental." Bai Li swallowed nervously, watching the approaching giants.
