Chapter 6: The Reiss I
In the darkness of the night, with a pouch of money in her possession, a cloaked nun ran off across alleys and back to the Orphanage.
'I have to go... before they realise that Arthur is missing!'
All she had to do was go back to pick up some important belongings. She packed up some documents and clothes and put them in a small bag that was easy to carry. She discarded her nun's outfit and dressed in casual clothes and wearing a cloak before heading back off again.
She wanted to take advantage of the darkness.
"Sister... where are you going?" A delicate voice mumbled.
Vanessa stammered.
She saw the form of a girl cleaning her eyes and yawning in the night, wondering where she was going this deep at night. The girl had just gone to the toilet.
Vanessa bit her lips; Arthur wasn't the only kid she took care of. But she had already chosen who she valued the most. The nun bit her lips and patted the girl's head, "Go back to sleep, Sarah, you have school tomorrow–"
"But where are you going this late?" the little girl insisted. She'd never seen the nun wandering around this late at night; it was a rule that they couldn't be wandering around this late, but she just needed to hit the toilet so bad... that she broke the rule. Just didn't expect the nun to also be breaking the rule.
"I-I'm... I am just going to get some milk, then I will be back... be a good girl and go sleep, I'll wake you up".
Vanessa almost tapped her forehead for the stupid excuse she just spouted, but given the nerves, she couldn't come up with anything better.
"Okay then..." The girl thought it was fair; she didn't want to wake up with no milk to drink either.
After tucking the girl to bed and apologising inwardly in her mind, Vanessa ran off at night when there weren't many people around to ask questions. She looked left and right at all times, not afraid of criminals, but instead, afraid of the Military Police.
Once she reached the gate to cross from Stohess into the wildlife of Wall Maria, she was stopped by the overnight officers and told she wasn't able to cross the gate until early in the morning. They said so rather strictly, as if it were common knowledge.
Only members of the military were allowed to cross the gates at all times.
'N-No... in the morning? Maybe that is still early enough,' Vanessa told herself, 'Even if Arthur went missing, it is not like they will know immediately, I am only questioned about his status every three months, there is nothing to be afraid of'
The nun didn't even bother to look for somewhere to sleep. She went to the nearest plaza and stood alert at all times until a queue formed to cross the gates early in the morning, with the sun beginning to creep up the murals. However, upon looking closer, aside from the checkup officer, there were also military police members watching every person in the queue.
She paled, but she knew there was no other way to leave the city.
'I don't have a choice, the checkup to enter Wall Rose will be even more strict, and if I stay, it will be worse. I have to go now!'
She got in the queue, and when the military police saw her, they asked her questions... Vanessa thought she was doomed.
"You're Sister Vanessa, aren't you? What are your reasons for leaving Stohess?" One of them questioned.
"I want to visit a family member out in the field. I will be back in the evening," Vanessa lied with a straight face, just the way she had seen Arthur do so many times.
"Is that so...? Go ahead, have a good day and stay safe, sister".
Much to her surprise, it worked. Tons of weight left her shoulders as she walked in with a nonchalant expression, rejoicing inwardly and saying her goodbyes to the city where she didn't expect to return for a long time.
Sadly for her, the military officers who let her in with a smile dropped it the next second. One of them made some hand signs to the other... and they let her go and take a horse, only to chase her soon after.
"The boy is not with her..." One of them mumbled, "The boy from outside the walls".
"We will follow her up close, she may be going to visit a family member just as she says. But if that's not the case... we will apprehend her quietly".
"Darren, you look around, she may be a decoy... he could be somewhere else waiting. Stay alert".
One of the military police members, a new graduate who hadn't joined too long ago. Looked at the scene with queer and interest, "Is it necessary to do all this for just a kid?".
"Don't ask questions and do what you're told, soldier. You're not paid to think, you're paid to act"
"Y-Yes".

[Arthur's POV]
It has been a year since I was adopted.
My life as Arthur Borg was not easy. More often than not, I found myself missing those days: pickpocketing and stealing bread with my friend, rather than being at home, doing accountability, statistics, and ultimately managing the business that I was going to inherit in the future.
It was an easier life, but I didn't feel free.
Vannir and Leon are unable to have children; they have tried, but neither of them is able to have children. Medicine in this world is not advanced enough for them to know who is to blame.
It seems both of them have already tried surrogacy out of desperation, but it still ended up as a failure. Be it as it may, I was already told not to expect parental love. I was here to solve a problem, not be a beloved son.
I am proud that I have managed to keep up. My new mother is very strict, but she has taught me a lot. Although I have taught them more than they have taught me by now.
The Borg family is very renowned in the medical field in Sheena. My father inherited his business from my grandfather, and he married my mother, a talented doctor.
Both she and my father take care of different aspects of the business. He takes care of distribution, she takes care of the technical part. And I run statistics, marketing and sales... although those are branches no business took into consideration in this world and didn't even know they existed until now.
I was doing a splendid job. However, there was a limit to the amount of knowledge I could display to pass the threshold that exists between a 'genius' and a 'demon in disguise'.
No matter how much of a genius you are... There is a limit after which it is not fun anymore. That didn't stop me from casually 'experimenting' while I was watching some of my mother's research. I 'casually' came across some of the plants she was using to create some beverages, of which one was close and similar to Opium Poppy.
To put it short, as a Londoner deep in my heart, I immediately thought about Heroin.
Sadly, I couldn't exploit this knowledge enough because, for one, I am not a chemist or a doctor that can accurately pinpoint the usage and properties of opium... and second, the acids and hydroxides necessary to create Morphine, codeine or Heroin are not yet available, science is just not that advanced. It would take years of research to implement this knowledge.
Knowledge that a seven-year-old boy couldn't possibly know without raising suspicions. My mother was a very talented psychian, she already had an insight in regards to the pain relief properties of opium. I just had to lead her little by little without going too much over the top while also learning from her in order to justify my knowledge.
Hopefully, in no time, she'd make it on her own without me having to give much input.
