At The Peak of One Piece

Chapter 66: Chapter 66: The Test

The group turned to look where Victor pointed—a tiny blue speck in the distance. An ordinary person wouldn't have even seen it, but everyone present was far from ordinary. Still, the distance was no joke.

Wendy said nothing, simply nodding as she pulled out a long rifle. It resembled a bolt-action from Victor's past life—about 1.3 meters long, no scope, custom-made for her. The ammunition wasn't round but conical, with an effective range of two kilometers. Even at one kilometer, this was no easy shot.

She raised the rifle, stock pressed firmly against her shoulder, one eye closed as she lined up the iron sights. The blue leaf swayed gently in the breeze, oblivious to its impending fate.

Victor closed his eyes, relying on Observation Haki. The others kept their eyes locked on the target.

Bang!

The gunshot echoed across the shore.

To Victor's heightened senses, the bullet moved in slow motion, spinning lazily through the air. The distant leaf seemed frozen in time, its movements sluggish in his perception.

To everyone else, it was over in an instant.

The bullet punched clean through the center of the leaf, leaving a perfect hole.

"Missed? What a shame," Hina sighed.

"Victor, it was too far. Let her try again," Rebecca urged.

Smoker stayed silent—he hadn't seen a damn thing.

Wendy, however, remained calm. She knew.

Victor opened his eyes and grinned. "She hit it. Why try again? Go check for yourselves."

Rebecca and Hina jogged over to inspect the leaf while Wendy stayed put, confident in her shot. Smoker, too embarrassed to admit he hadn't seen anything, kept his mouth shut and tried to look brooding.

The two girls returned, leaf in hand. Victor had dyed it blue—it would've died soon anyway.

"Wendy, you actually hit it! That's amazing! I could barely even see it!" Rebecca gushed.

"Tashiga's never seen anyone that precise before," Hina added.

Wendy flushed slightly, unused to the praise. Victor watched them with amusement before glancing at Smoker, who scowled in response.

"Alright, that was just the first test," Victor cut in. "Now for the moving target."

Wendy had expected this. She nodded, ready.

Without hesitation, Victor grabbed a meat bone from the table and hurled it toward the sea.

Wendy fired instantly. The bone shattered mid-air before it could even hit the water.

Victor threw the next one faster—angled upward this time. Another clean hit.

By the eighth throw, the bones were moving at Soru speeds.

This time, Wendy missed.

But Victor was pleased. She'd passed. Once she learned Soru herself, even this speed wouldn't be an issue. With Observation Haki, a sniper's reaction time could keep up with almost anything—well, except monsters like Victor.

"Good. You've passed," Victor announced. "Welcome aboard."

Wendy exhaled in relief, even as Rebecca and Hina cheered. Smoker just grunted.

"Wendy, I'll talk to Instructor Andrew. From now on, you'll focus solely on sniper training when not here. Rebecca's working on Observation Haki—you'll train together. Sound good?" Victor said.

Wendy beamed. "Perfect. I'd rather not waste time on other classes anyway."

"Great. If Andrew disagrees, I'll just discuss it with him."

The girls laughed. Smoker looked pained.

The Next Day

Victor cornered Andrew during morning drills.

Andrew paled. "V-Victor! I'm busy—"

"Relax. I'm here about Wendy. She's my sniper now. Adjust her schedule."

Andrew hesitated—until Victor cracked his knuckles.

"Fine! But no more requests!"

As Victor walked away, Andrew muttered, "Just wait till Garp gets back. You'll get yours..."

---

The day finally arrived.

Andrew delivered the message with barely concealed glee: "Garp wants you at the docks to welcome his triumphant return."

Victor rolled his eyes. Triumphant? What'd he do, punch a Sea King?

This was just an excuse to humiliate him in public.

Well… bring it on, old man.
