Ash Ketchum: A Shinobi’s Second Chance

Chapter 5: Chapter 5: Fishing for Trouble

---

Ash Ketchum adjusted the fishing rod in his hands, squinting at the clear waters of a gentle river just outside Viridian Forest. The morning sun cast dancing reflections across the surface, making the water sparkle like scattered diamonds. Pikachu lounged nearby on a moss-covered rock, tail twitching lazily as he watched a family of Caterpie inch their way up a nearby oak tree.

"I'm telling you, Pikachu," Ash said confidently, pulling out his well-worn Pokémon handbook and flipping to a dog-eared page, "the first Gym is Rock-type. Brock uses Onix and Geodude—both completely vulnerable to Water-type moves. We're going to need a Water-type to stand a chance."

"Pika..." Pikachu offered a skeptical look, tilting his head as if to say, *You sure this fishing thing is going to work? Remember what happened with that Magikarp yesterday?*

Ash had indeed tried to catch a Magikarp the day before, only to have it flop around so violently that it knocked him into a mud puddle. But today felt different. Today felt lucky.

"Professor Oak said this river is home to Poliwag and Goldeen," Ash continued, checking his tackle box one more time. "Just one good catch, and we'll be ready for Pewter City. Plus, Mom packed us those great sandwiches—we've got all day."

The float bobbed gently on the current. Then dipped slightly.

Ash's eyes lit up. "We got one!"

He yanked the rod hard, perhaps a bit too enthusiastically.

The surface of the water exploded.

Instead of a small, manageable Poliwag, a massive Gyarados burst out of the river, roaring in fury, its serpentine coils thrashing water in every direction. Its whiskers flared, its eyes blazed with ancient rage, and its massive jaws opened wide enough to swallow a small car.

Ash's jaw dropped. His fishing rod trembled in his hands. "THAT'S NOT A POLIWAG!"

The beast clamped its jaws around the fishing line, and with a sound like thunder, dragged Ash and a screeching Pikachu straight into the river with a violent splash that sent waves cascading onto the shore.

"PIKAAAAAA!" Pikachu's voice echoed across the water as they were pulled under by the current.

---

Several hundred yards downriver, Misty Waterflower was enjoying what had started as a perfectly peaceful afternoon of fishing. Her orange hair was tied back in a practical ponytail, her tackle box was organized with military precision, and her line was still as glass. She had positioned herself at the perfect spot—a quiet bend where the river deepened, creating an ideal habitat for Water-types.

She was humming an old lullaby her sisters used to sing, something about Goldeen and moonbeams, when two screaming voices pierced the tranquil afternoon air.

"WHOOOAAAA—LOOK OUTTTTT!"

"PIKA-PIKA-PIKA!"

A flash of yellow lightning. A blur of black hair and red cap. A kid and his Pikachu slammed into her from behind with the force of a freight train, knocking her flat and sending all three of them tumbling onto the muddy riverbank in a soggy, undignified heap.

"Ow..." Misty sat up slowly, soaked to the bone and furious. Her carefully arranged fishing gear was scattered everywhere, her hat was sideways, and there was a suspicious-looking weed draped over her shoulder. "Who—what—why—?!"

Ash coughed river water and blinked up at her through a curtain of dripping hair. "Hi there. I think I caught a Gyarados. And it didn't like that very much."

"You think?!" Misty's voice cracked with disbelief.

Before either could argue further, the water behind them surged ominously. The angry Gyarados reappeared, its great serpentine head rising high above the treeline like some primordial sea monster. Its eyes glowed with primal fury, and when it opened its maw, the sound that emerged was like the roar of a hurricane.

"GARAAAAAAA—DOOOOSSSS!"

The very air seemed to vibrate with the force of its cry. Dark clouds began gathering overhead, as if the Gyarados's rage was summoning a storm.

---

Ash scrambled to his feet, his eyes blazing with determination despite the overwhelming odds. He'd learned from Professor Oak that when facing a superior opponent, you had to think creatively, use the environment, and never give up—no matter how impossible the situation seemed.

"Pikachu, we've got this!" Ash shouted, his voice cutting through the rising wind. "But we need to be smart about it!"

The Gyarados lunged forward with incredible speed, its massive jaws snapping where Ash had been standing just moments before. Ash dove to the side, rolling across the muddy ground and coming up in a crouch.

"Pikachu, get some distance—use Quick Attack to circle around behind it!"

Pikachu shot forward like a yellow bullet, using his enhanced speed to dart around the Gyarados's massive form. The sea serpent tried to follow Pikachu's movement but couldn't turn fast enough to keep up with the electric mouse's agility.

"Now you're in position!" Ash called out, his mind racing as he analyzed the battlefield. The Gyarados was massive and powerful, but it was also angry and predictable. Every rage-filled attack was telegraphed, every movement driven by fury rather than strategy.

"Pikachu, Thunder Wave on the water—now!"

Electricity coursed through Pikachu's cheeks as he released a crackling wave of paralysis energy. Instead of aiming directly at the Gyarados, the attack spread across the water's surface, creating a field of electrical energy that made the river itself a weapon.

The Gyarados thrashed as the paralysis took hold, its movements becoming sluggish and uncoordinated. But its rage only intensified.

"GYARADOS!" it roared, and suddenly the air around it began to swirl violently.

"It's using Twister!" Misty shouted, recognizing the attack. "Get away from the water!"

A massive tornado of water and wind erupted from the river, spinning with deadly force. Ash grabbed Pikachu and leaped backward, but the twister was expanding rapidly, sucking up debris and river water in its violent spiral.

Instead of running, Ash planted his feet and studied the attack pattern. The twister was rotating clockwise, which meant the eye was moving in a predictable path. His eyes tracked the debris caught in the winds, calculating timing and trajectory like he was solving a complex puzzle.

"Pikachu, we're going to use its own attack against it!" Ash called out. "When I say jump, you use Agility to get us into the eye of the storm!"

"You're insane!" Misty screamed, but she couldn't help but watch in fascination as Ash seemed to read the chaotic winds like a book.

The Gyarados launched itself forward through its own twister, using the cover of the swirling water to mask its approach. Most trainers would have panicked at the sight of several tons of enraged sea serpent bearing down on them through a tornado.

Ash grinned.

"Now! Agility!"

Pikachu became a blur of motion, his speed enhanced to superhuman levels. Together, they leaped directly into the path of the oncoming Gyarados—but at the last second, Ash twisted in mid-air, using the twister's rotation to spin them around the massive Pokémon's head.

"Thunderbolt—point blank range!"

The electrical attack exploded at close range, but Ash had positioned them perfectly. The metallic content in the river water, combined with the Gyarados's own dampness, conducted the electricity with devastating efficiency. The sea serpent's roar of rage became a cry of pain as it crashed back into the river.

But it wasn't finished.

The Gyarados emerged from the water with even greater fury, its eyes now glowing with an ominous red light. It opened its massive jaws, and Ash could see energy gathering in its throat—a Hyper Beam building to full power.

"That's going to level half the forest!" Misty gasped.

Most trainers would have ordered their Pokémon to dodge, to take cover, to survive the overwhelming attack. But Ash saw something else—an opportunity hidden within the danger.

"Pikachu, we need to make it waste that attack!" Ash called out, his voice suddenly calm despite the chaos around them. "Double Team—spread out those illusions!"

Pikachu created a dozen identical copies of himself, visual illusions that scattered in different directions around the Gyarados. The massive sea serpent's eyes darted back and forth, unable to distinguish the real Pikachu from the decoys.

The Hyper Beam erupted from Gyarados's mouth like a concentrated ray of destruction, vaporizing trees and boiling the river water where it struck. But the attack was too focused, too narrow—the Gyarados had aimed at one of the illusions, and the real Pikachu was safely positioned behind a boulder.

"Perfect! Now while it's recharging—Thunder!"

The sky lit up as a massive bolt of lightning struck the Gyarados, amplified by the storm clouds that had gathered overhead. The electrical discharge was so intense that the very air seemed to catch fire, and the attack was perfectly timed to hit during the brief moment when Gyarados was vulnerable after its Hyper Beam.

The Gyarados's roar shook the entire forest as it crashed back into the river with a tremendous splash. For a moment, the water was still.

Then, slowly, the great sea serpent's head emerged once more. But this time, its eyes held respect rather than rage. It looked at Ash and Pikachu for a long moment, as if acknowledging their courage and skill.

With a final, almost respectful nod, the Gyarados sank beneath the surface and disappeared into the deeper parts of the river, leaving only ripples behind.

Ash and Pikachu stood panting on the riverbank, both exhausted but victorious. The storm clouds began to disperse, and golden sunlight broke through the gloom.

"That was..." Misty started, then stopped, staring at Ash with a mixture of awe and disbelief. "How did you do that? You fought like you could predict every move it was going to make!"

Ash grinned, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Professor Oak always said the best battles aren't won by the strongest Pokémon—they're won by the smartest trainers. You've got to think three steps ahead, use everything around you, and never give up."

Before Misty could respond, she noticed something alarming. Smoke was rising from the forest behind them, where the Hyper Beam had struck several trees.

"My bike!" she shrieked, watching her brand-new bicycle transform into a twisted sculpture of charred metal as the flames spread.

Ash winced, recognizing the tone. He'd heard it before. "That keeps happening..."

---

With the forest fire spreading rapidly, the unlikely trio fled into a nearby cave system. The entrance was partially hidden by hanging vines, but it opened into a surprisingly spacious chamber that went deeper into the hillside.

They ducked inside just as the first drops of rain began to fall, nature's own firefighting system beginning to combat the blaze they'd accidentally started.

Soaked, breathless, and covered in soot, they collapsed on the rocky floor. Ash pulled out a small camping lantern from his backpack, casting dancing shadows on the cave walls.

Misty sat with her arms crossed, glaring at Ash with an expression that could have melted steel. Her hair was plastered to her head, her clothes were torn, and her favorite fishing rod was bent at an impossible angle.

"Let me get this straight," she said, her voice dangerously calm. "You caught a Gyarados by accident, fought it using some kind of insane battle strategy I've never seen before, and then accidentally burned down my bike in the process?"

"The bike burning was technically the Gyarados's fault," Ash said sheepishly, wringing water from his cap. "But yeah, basically. Sorry about that."

Misty sighed deeply, the kind of sigh that suggested she was reconsidering many life choices. "You owe me a new one."

Ash nodded solemnly. "Fair."

As they sat in the cave, waiting for the rain to put out the fire, Ash couldn't help but notice how expertly Misty had identified the Gyarados's attacks during the battle. She'd kept her cool when most people would have run screaming, and she clearly knew her way around Water-types.

"So," he said tentatively, "you seem to know a lot about Pokémon battles."

"I've been around Water-types my whole life," Misty replied evasively, some of her anger fading but her expression still guarded. "You pick things up."

Ash waited for her to elaborate, but she just stared at the cave wall, clearly not wanting to share more details about herself.

"Well, thanks for helping identify those attacks," he said finally. "That battle strategy was pretty crazy, wasn't it?"

"Crazy is definitely the word," Misty said, but there was a hint of reluctant admiration in her voice. "Reckless, insane, and likely to get you killed, but... it worked."

Pikachu, who had been quietly grooming his damp fur, looked up and made a small sound that seemed to agree with Misty's assessment.

"Whose side are you on?" Ash muttered.

---

After what felt like hours, the storm finally passed. The rain had extinguished the forest fire, and they emerged from the cave to find the forest transformed. Steam rose from the trees in ethereal wisps, and the wet forest glistened like a fairy tale illustration.

Then something caught Ash's eye.

A rainbow arched across the sky, more vivid and radiant than any he'd ever seen. The colors seemed to pulse with their own inner light, and the arc stretched from one horizon to the other like a bridge between worlds.

And flying just below it, wings aglow with golden fire and crimson light, was a massive bird Pokémon unlike any he'd ever seen. Its feathers seemed to be made of living flame, and its cry was like the sound of distant music.

Ash froze, his breath caught in his throat.

"Ho-Oh..." he whispered, eyes wide with wonder.

The Legendary Pokémon soared above them with impossible grace, leaving trails of light and glimmering mist in its wake. Where it passed, the very air seemed to shimmer with magic.

As it flew overhead, a single feather drifted from the sky—spinning slowly, shimmering with rainbow light—and landed softly at Ash's feet like a gift from the heavens.

Carefully, reverently, he picked it up. The feather pulsed faintly with warmth, and he could swear he heard the distant sound of bells.

"Incredible..." Ash murmured, holding the feather up to the light.

Pikachu stood beside him, equally awed, his red cheeks glowing softly in response to the feather's mystical energy.

Misty? Still fast asleep near the dying embers of their cave fire, curled up with her jacket as a pillow, utterly unaware of the miracle occurring just outside.

Ash quickly pulled out his Pokégear camera, hands trembling slightly as he snapped a photo of Ho-Oh as it flew away toward the setting sun. Then he took another photo of the rainbow feather resting in his palm, making sure to capture the way it seemed to glow with its own inner light.

"Professor Oak's gonna freak out," Ash grinned, carefully wrapping the feather in a spare handkerchief. "This has to be worth... I don't even know. Maybe millions?"

He paused, looking at the sleeping Misty, then at his destroyed bike fund, then at the priceless feather in his hands.

"Maybe enough to buy a really nice bike," he added thoughtfully.

---

The next morning, Misty yawned and stretched, blinking in the early sunlight streaming through the cave entrance. Her hair was sticking up at odd angles, and she had the confused look of someone who'd slept on rocks.

"Ugh... weird dreams," she mumbled, rubbing her eyes. "I think you snored in your sleep."

Ash, who was carefully storing the Ho-Oh feather in a small protective pouch inside his backpack, just smiled mysteriously.

"Yeah, I guess you missed the part where I maybe saw a Legendary Pokémon and became rich."

Misty blinked slowly, her brain still catching up. "Wait, what?"

"Nothing!" Ash replied quickly, shouldering his bag with suspicious enthusiasm.

"Hey!" Misty scrambled to her feet, suddenly wide awake. "What did you just say about a Legendary Pokémon?"

"Let's go! Pewter City's that way!" Ash pointed toward a trail that led up into the hills.

"Don't you dare run away from me!" Misty chased after him, grumbling about crazy boys and mysterious bird stories and the fact that she still needed a new bike.

Pikachu bounced along behind them, still glowing softly from the memory of that radiant moment, occasionally glancing back at the river where their adventure had begun.

As they walked, Ash couldn't help but smile. He'd started the day hoping to catch a simple Poliwag, and instead he'd battled a legendary Gyarados using everything he'd learned about strategy and teamwork, met a new friend (who admittedly wanted to strangle him), and witnessed one of the rarest Pokémon in the world.

Maybe his fishing technique needed work, but his battle instincts were definitely getting sharper.

Behind them, the river continued its gentle flow, carrying away the last traces of their chaotic encounter and leaving only the memory of lightning dancing on the water and the echo of a battle that would become legend.
