"Sorry, I didn't expect that effect either. But it wasn't dangerous. If you had been inside, you would have just lost your sight for a few seconds, that's all," Kevin apologized, trying to calm the dolphin down.
"Can you please not do that again?" the dolphin pleaded.
"Okay, I'll dedicate all my training today to mirages, but I'll need to come back to this darkness later," Kevin decided, not wanting to scare the dolphin anymore.
"Thank you!" Peter said happily, his composure restored. "Just before you decide to go back to that scary dark power, can you warn me?"
"Alright," Kevin smiled, looking at the once again cheerful dolphin.
…
After the previous experiments, Kevin moved on to invisibility. In theory, he just needed to create a sphere around himself that light rays would bend around.
It sounded simple enough, but in practice, the main difficulty was that this sphere had to neither absorb nor re-emit the light that fell on it.
And while Kevin had just gained new experience with light absorption and ideas on how to combat it were already forming in his head, re-emission was a problem.
His first attempts at creating invisibility were complete failures. You could hardly even call them attempts.
The sphere would either start glowing like a disco ball or, on the contrary, become a dark spot in the middle of the beach.
The main thing was that each time it was more like a test of his attention-grabbing skills than hiding his existence.
At one point, Kevin even wanted to postpone the development of the ability due to its complexity and uselessness against someone like Homelander or anyone with equally perfect hearing or a similar sensitivity.
After all, he was breaking his brain and straining new additional senses, while the leader of The Seven could find him in a couple of seconds just by his heartbeat.
And against X-ray vision, he would probably need a different version of invisibility.
But remembering what Translucent had achieved with just two superpowers, Kevin decided to continue his attempts.
Around one in the morning, Kevin had a breakthrough and was able to partially realize the concept of invisibility.
Now, he was no longer surrounded by a sphere, but an oval with clear outlines and, finally, the transparency that Moskowitz so desired.
At first, it looked like the space with the oval was a bad TV with low picture quality, but after a series of tests, The Deep was able to partially correct the re-emission, and soon the invisibility could be called almost perfect.
The only thing he couldn't get rid of, even after several hours of tests, was the outline of the figure, which clearly negated all of Kevin's practice.
But not losing heart, The Deep acknowledged his results as extremely impressive.
And if you thought about it, you could use this version of light camouflage in specific places like doors, walls, or windows, adjusting the size of the invisible field to their shape and contours.
Checking the time on his phone and groaning when he saw he'd been at the beach until three in the morning, Kevin said goodbye to Peter, promised to return tomorrow, and headed home.
The next day, he delivered the final crate of fish to the beach and could see that the number of sea creatures watching him from the water had tripled.
"Does he really understand us?"
"Will there be a lot of fish?"
"Is it true he can breathe underwater without any metal things?"
"If I give you a ride on my back, how many treats will you give me?"
A chorus of voices from a couple of dozen dolphins immediately hit Kevin's ears.
"One at a time," Kevin said, raising his voice, which made the dolphins fall silent for a moment.
"He understands."
"Amazing."
"Does he eat fish himself?"
"Guys, that's enough!" Peter managed to quiet everyone down, earning a grateful look from Moskowitz, who had already regretted several times that he didn't have his comic book counterpart's ability to control sea life.
"Peter, you have so many friends now?" Kevin asked, opening the crate under the watchful gaze of a couple of dozen pairs of eyes.
"They're friends of friends," the dolphin explained sheepishly, not particularly happy about the crowd of relatives that had shown up.
"Well, we usually stretched the crate for a few hours anyway, so let's just say I got more time for training," Kevin said with a wave of his hand, taking out the first fish and throwing it to the mammals, who resembled a hungry pack of sharks.
Having emptied the crate of food in record time, Moskowitz was finally able to start his combat training.
First, Kevin decided to switch his laser attacks to the more familiar and, most importantly, recognizable form of laser vision.
Since his entire body was light, The Deep had no trouble switching the blasts to his eyes and was relieved to confirm that his vision was completely immune to this use of his powers.
Of course, he wasn't afraid of going blind; his flashbang-like attacks didn't cause him any discomfort. But he hadn't been completely sure he'd be able to see while firing like this.
Fortunately, it wasn't a problem, and after creating a decent mirage mirror with almost no effort, The Deep happily struck various epic poses, increased and decreased the size of the blast zone, and experimented with the perfect fear-inducing scowl.
After the fun part of his training was over, Kevin remembered about the targets and, with a string of curses, began to practice shooting at natural substitutes found within a few hundred meters of the beach.
Using laser vision was way more interesting for Moskowitz than the previous index-finger variation.
Seeing everything his gaze fell upon melt or even vanish at a speed imperceptible to his mind was thrilling and, in a way, even sublime.
Perhaps in that moment, he could understand a little of Homelander's arrogance; the ability to kill someone just by looking at them truly resembled the power of a god.
