Chapter 18: 18
Mark stood in front of the ice sculpture, the new power surging in his body, like a warm current, making him feel stronger than ever before. However, this power also brought a deep uneasiness, because he didn't know the true source of this power, nor how it would change his fate.
Karl stood beside Mark, his eyes revealing a hint of complex emotions. He knew that after his identity was revealed, the relationship between him and Mark would face a huge test. He took a deep breath and tried to calm his emotions.
"Mark, I know you must have a lot of questions now." Karl's voice broke the silence, "I will do my best to answer your questions."
Mark turned his head and looked into Karl's eyes. "Are you really a man-made man? What is your mission?"
Karl nodded, with a hint of firmness in his eyes. "Yes, I was created by the descendants of ancient humans. My mission is to protect the secrets of this world and ensure that it will not be used by the wrong people. And you, Mark, you are the chosen one, you have the ability to control this power."
A complex emotion surged in Mark's heart, and he didn't know if he should believe Karl. He took a deep breath and tried to sort out his thoughts. "So, what about the captain? Is he also a descendant of ancient humans?"
Carl smiled slightly, and there was a hint of respect in his eyes. "Yes, he shoulders the responsibility of protecting this world. He chose you, Mark, because you have the potential to become the new guardian."
"Are the people outside also descendants of ancient humans? Is the rescue team I met before also?"
"The people outside are all artificial people like me, and the captain is the only descendant of ancient humans." Carl paused and said, "The rescue team you met before and the place where we are now are both an organization called Rebirth. They believe that humans are the virus of this world and are committed to cleansing humans. Only after using the Ice Abyss Beast to eliminate humans can the world be reborn."
Mark's heart was full of doubts. He didn't know why the captain chose him. He walked to the ice sculpture, stretched out his hand, and gently touched the surface of the ice sculpture. The light on the ice sculpture seemed to respond to his touch and became more dazzling.
"So, what should I do now?" There was a hint of determination in Mark's voice.
Carl walked to Mark's side, his eyes firm and powerful. "First, you need to learn to control this power. Then, we need to find those who try to use this power and stop them." Mark nodded. However, at this moment, the ice sculpture suddenly made a low roar, and the whole hall began to shake. Mark and Carl quickly stepped back and looked at the ice sculpture vigilantly. "What's going on?" There was a hint of panic in Mark's voice. Carl's face became solemn, and he quickly pulled out the survival knife and looked around vigilantly. "No, something is coming out." As the vibration of the ice sculpture became more and more intense, a crack suddenly appeared on the surface of the ice sculpture. The crack expanded rapidly, and finally, the ice sculpture shattered, and a huge black shadow rushed out of the ice sculpture and rushed straight towards Mark and Carl. Mark instinctively stretched out his hands, and the energy light in his palms burst out instantly, forming an energy barrier. The black shadow hit the energy barrier, making a deafening roar, and then bounced off. The black shadow rolled several times in the air and then landed steadily on the ground. Its figure looked particularly strange in the dim light. Its body seemed to be made of darkness itself, with only a pair of red eyes flashing an evil light in the darkness. Its form kept changing, sometimes like a huge beast, and sometimes like a vague black mist.
Carl took the opportunity to rush forward, and the survival knife in his hand turned into cold light and attacked the black shadow. The black shadow let out an angry roar, and its body became illusory under Carl's attack, but soon condensed into shape again.
The battle was extremely fierce. Although Carl's knife skills were sharp, the black shadow seemed to be able to absorb damage. Every attack could only temporarily repel it and could not cause substantial damage. Beads of sweat oozed from Carl's forehead, and his breathing became rapid.
Mark watched the battle nervously, his heart full of fear. He had never seen such a powerful enemy, and he didn't know if Carl could defeat this mysterious black shadow. He clenched his fists tightly, and the energy light in his palms flickered. He was eager to help Carl, but he was afraid that his strength was not enough.
Finally, Carl found the shadow's weakness, and his blade accurately pierced the shadow's heart. The shadow let out a shrill scream, and its body began to dissipate and eventually disappeared into the air.
The hall returned to calm, and Mark and Carl looked around vigilantly to make sure there were no other threats. Mark's heart was full of shock. He didn't know what the shadow was, nor why it rushed out of the ice sculpture.
"What is that?" Mark's voice was trembling.
Carl put away the survival knife, and there was a hint of worry in his eyes. "I don't know, but I feel it is related to this power. We must be careful. The secrets of this world are much more complicated than we thought."
Carl took Mark to the other side of the ice peak, where there was a natural ice cave. The cave was warm and dry, and it was a good training place. Carl began to teach Mark how to sense and control the power in his body.
"The first thing you need to do is calm down and feel the flow of this power." Carl's voice echoed in the ice cave. "This power comes from the ice sculpture, and it is closely connected to this frozen land." Mark closed his eyes, and he tried to empty his mind and feel the power in his body. At first, he could only feel a warm breath flowing in his body, but as time went on, he began to be able to perceive the subtle changes in power. "Okay, now you try to guide this power to your hands." Carl instructed. Mark concentrated his mind and felt the power begin to gather in his hands. Suddenly, a faint light shone from his palms, although it was weak, it was a good start. "Very good, now you try to release this power." Carl continued to instruct. Mark took a deep breath, concentrated the power in his palms, and then pushed forward with force. A weak beam of energy shot out from his palms and hit the wall of the ice cave, leaving a shallow mark.
