As a scientific researcher, why should I save the world?

Chapter 14: 14

Mark stood on the ice field, his hands seemed to no longer belong to him, but were controlled by some more powerful force. He could feel the energy rushing through his veins, like a warm torrent, flowing from his heart to his limbs, and finally gathered in his palms. This feeling was both strange and familiar, just like the flight he had experienced in his dreams, free and powerful.

He looked up and looked at the snowflakes flying in the sky, they were flashing blue light under the brilliance of energy. Mark took a deep breath, the air was filled with the freshness of ice and snow and a subtle sense of electricity. He knew that this energy was closely connected to this frozen land, it was both his shelter and his challenge.

At this moment, a deafening roar broke the tranquility of the ice field, and the ground shook, as if thousands of troops were galloping underground. Carl's face changed, he quickly pulled out the survival knife, and looked around vigilantly. "Oh no, it's the Ice Abyss Beasts! There are so many of them!" He spoke in a hurried tone, and his speed was very fast. "They are attracted by the energy fluctuations!" Before he finished speaking, countless ferocious Ice Abyss Beasts rushed in from all directions. They looked like giant wolves, with ice blue bodies, flashing cold light, and sharp claws and fangs exuding a chilling murderous aura. The ice and snow on the ice field, which originally reflected the sunlight, were now covered by these surging blue figures, approaching rapidly like a surging tide. The biting cold wind carried ice and snow particles, scraping on the face like a knife. Carl realized that the situation was critical and immediately shouted to Mark: "Mark! Use the power you just now! Quick!" While shouting, he waved the survival knife and rushed towards the first few Ice Abyss Beasts that rushed up. The blade collided with the ice claws, making a harsh metal friction sound. Mark heard Carl's shout and suddenly came back to his senses. He took a deep breath and tried to calm the surging energy in his body. He closed his eyes, concentrated, and directed the surging energy in his body to his hands. When he opened his eyes again, his eyes flashed with dazzling blue light, and his hands also emitted a fiery energy light, which gradually condensed into two energy beams.

"Hah!" Mark shouted in a low voice, and pushed his palms forward. Two energy beams shot at the approaching ice abyss beasts like arrows from a string. The dazzling light cut through the snow-covered field, and the first few ice abyss beasts were instantly knocked away, making a shrill scream, and their heavy bodies fell on the ice, stirring up a piece of ice chips.

Carl seized this opportunity and flexibly shuttled between the remaining ice abyss beasts. The survival knife in his hand turned into a cold light, accurately attacking the weaknesses of the ice abyss beasts. While fighting, he vigilantly observed the situation around him, ready to cover Mark at any time.

Mark continuously released energy shock waves, and the powerful energy repelled a large number of ice abyss beasts. He was also trying to control the output of energy to avoid accidentally injuring Carl who was fighting. With each release of energy, he became more and more adept at controlling energy, and his attacks became more and more accurate.

The battle on the ice field was extremely fierce. The roar of the ice beast, the sound of Carl swinging his knife, and the explosion of the energy beam were intertwined and deafening. Ice and snow were flying, the cold wind was whistling, and the entire ice field seemed to have turned into a huge arena.

Gradually, the ice beasts began to disintegrate under Mark's powerful energy attack. They looked at the energy surging in Mark's hand with fear, and they all made low whimpers, and finally turned around and fled.

Mark stopped the energy output, stood there panting, and his clothes were soaked with sweat. He looked at the fleeing ice beast, then looked at Carl who was wiping the blade, and breathed a sigh of relief.

Carl walked up to Mark, patted him on the shoulder, and said with a hint of appreciation: "Well done, kid. It seems that you have mastered this power." He put away the survival knife, looked up into the distance, and a trace of worry flashed in his eyes, "But this is just the beginning. We have to leave here as soon as possible and find a way to leave this frozen hell." After that, he took the lead and continued to walk deep into the ice field. Mark followed closely behind, knowing that their adventure was far from over.

Mark took a deep breath, and the cold air made him shiver involuntarily. He quickly followed Carl and said, "Carl, do you feel... that the energy in my body seems to be gradually weakening?" As he spoke, he raised his hands, and the palms faintly flickered with a light blue light, which was much dimmer than when fighting.

Carl stopped, turned and looked at Mark, frowning slightly. "Weakened? What does it feel like?" He looked at Mark with sharp eyes, as if he wanted to see something from his expression.

"Just like..." Mark tried hard to find the right words to describe it, "Just like the water level of the reservoir is dropping. Although I can still feel the existence of energy, it always feels less abundant than before." He unconsciously clenched his fists, and the light in his palms flickered, and then quickly dimmed.

Carl pondered for a moment, walked to a rock covered with thin ice and sat down, motioning Mark to sit down as well. The wind and snow around were a little smaller, but the whistling wind was still harsh. Carl took out a metal water bottle from his backpack and handed it to Mark. "Drink some water to warm your body."

Mark took the water bottle and took a sip. The cold snow water flowed down his throat into his stomach, which refreshed him. "Thank you." He handed the water bottle back to Carl, and then said, "I'm worried that this energy will suddenly disappear, just like it suddenly appeared." There was a hint of uneasiness in his tone, and his eyes involuntarily drifted to the distance, the direction where the ice abyss beasts fled.

Carl took a sip of water, tightened the bottle cap, and put the water bottle back into the backpack. "We don't know the source of the energy yet," he said, his eyes sweeping across the empty ice field. "Maybe it has something to do with the environment of this place." Carl stood up and shook off the snow on his body. "We have to find clues as soon as possible. I don't want to stay in this damn place any longer."
