As a scientific researcher, why should I save the world?

Chapter 12: 12

Mark lay beside the cold ice mound, his breathing gradually stabilized, and his consciousness slowly sank into the dream. In the dream, he was no longer the archaeologist struggling to survive on the ice field, but returned to an ancient and prosperous city.

The city was covered with ice and snow, but full of vitality. The towering ice towers and ice sculptures of the buildings shone brightly under the sunlight. The center of the city was a huge square, where all kinds of creatures gathered. Some looked like humans, and some looked like the legendary ice beasts. They lived together in harmony and guarded the city together.

As Mark walked on the square, he felt an inexplicable sense of familiarity. He saw humans and ice beasts working together, playing together, and even celebrating festivals together. Children played among the ice sculptures, while the ice beasts looked at them gently on the side, as if they were guardian gods.

He continued to move forward and came to the center of the city, where there was a huge altar. A huge crystal stone was inlaid on the altar, and the crystal stone emitted a warm light, illuminating the entire city. Mark felt a warm power gushing out of the crystal, which made him feel at ease and hopeful.

Around the altar, a group of priests in white robes were holding some kind of ceremony. Their voices were low and powerful, as if they were chanting an ancient spell. As they chanted, the light of the crystal became more dazzling, and the whole city was shrouded in this light.

Mark approached the altar and saw that the faces of the priests were all pious. They believed that this crystal was the link between humans and ice beasts and the key to maintaining the balance of this world. As long as the light of the crystal was not extinguished, the city would prosper forever.

Suddenly, the sky in the dream became gloomy, and a gust of wind swept up the ice and snow, blocking the sun. The crystal on the altar began to flicker, and the light became flickering. The priests' chanting became more rapid, and their faces showed worried looks.

Mark felt uneasy, he looked up at the sky, and saw a darkness approaching. That was not an ordinary dark cloud, but an unknown force that was trying to devour the city and the light of the crystal.

He saw the ice beasts stand up, their eyes flashing green and making low roars. They seemed to be warning something, but humans could not understand their language. Chaos began to spread in the city, people began to panic and began to flee.

The priests tried to maintain order, but their power was insignificant in the face of this darkness. The light of the crystal became weaker and weaker, the temperature of the city began to drop, and ice and snow began to cover everything.

Mark felt his heartbeat quicken, and he rushed to the altar and tried to touch the crystal. He wanted to use his power to wake it up and make it shine again. But when his hand was about to touch the crystal, a bolt of lightning fell from the sky and hit the altar.

With a loud bang, the crystal shattered, and its light completely disappeared. The whole city was shrouded in darkness, and the ice beasts roared angrily, and they began to attack humans and the city. The ice beast closest to Mark opened its bloody mouth and pounced on Mark.

The huge teeth bit Mark's body fiercely, and blood splashed everywhere.

"Help!"

Mark screamed loudly and sat up. Carl quickly stopped the tools in his hand and ran over.

Mark stood up, checked his body, and found that his body was intact. He felt relieved and said to Carl

"It's okay, I had a nightmare"

Carl nodded and got a cup of hot water and handed it to Mark.

"Thank you."

"I dreamed of an ancient city where humans and ice beasts lived in harmony, but then the ice beasts attacked humans." Carl listened, and a strange light flashed in his eyes.

"It was just a dream, Mark. But now, we need to focus and leave here."
