Chapter 27: A Glitch in the System (and the D.E.O.'s Breakthrough)
Cat Grant's "Report Your Glitch!" campaign had exploded, turning National City into a scavenger hunt for the absurd. My screens were a chaotic mosaic of user-submitted "glitch" videos, each one a testament to my unintended ripple effects. The internal frustration was a constant companion, but it was now laced with a grudging respect for Cat's media savvy. She was a force of nature, completely oblivious to the cosmic irony of her actions.
My attention, however, was increasingly drawn to the D.E.O. Alex Danvers, driven by her fear for Kara and her intellectual obsession, was relentlessly pushing her team. The platypus forklift and the impossible fog had fundamentally shattered her scientific paradigm. She was no longer trying to categorize me by known physics. She was building a new framework entirely.
I detected the shift in their energy signatures, in the subtle changes to their tracking algorithms. They were no longer just looking for anomalous energy. They were looking for patterns. For deviations in probability. For signatures of localized reality manipulation.
"Clever girl, Alex," I muttered, watching a complex algorithm unfold on a D.E.O. screen that I had subtly linked to. She was developing a predictive model, not of what I would do, but of where my ripple effects would likely manifest, and what kind of absurdities they would produce based on the magnitude of my previous interventions. It was a conceptual breakthrough, born from desperation and brilliance. She couldn't find me, but she could anticipate my aftermath.
[THREAT LEVEL: INCREASED. D.E.O. CONCEPTUAL BREAKTHROUGH. REEVALUATE TACTICS. PREDICTIVE CAPABILITIES ESTABLISHED FOR RIPPLE EFFECTS.]
A strange mix of grudging respect and heightened concern washed over me. This was a chess match, and Alex had just developed a remarkably effective way to track my pawns, even if she couldn't see my hand. This forced me to re-evaluate. My interventions would need to become even more precise, even more unpredictable in their form, if not their intent. I had to stay ahead of the curve.
Alex, in her private lab, was a whirlwind of frantic energy. Her hair was dishevelled, coffee cups littered her desk, but her eyes held the glint of intellectual triumph. "We've done it," she announced to a holographic projection of Henshaw, her voice tight with suppressed excitement. "We can't find 'the Glitch' directly, but we can now predict its signatures. We've created a probabilistic model for reality distortions. We can anticipate where the next 'glitch' might manifest, based on the energy output of its previous interventions and the resulting chaos."
Henshaw, ever stoic, simply nodded. "And the purpose of this, Agent Danvers?"
"To mitigate collateral damage," Alex said, her jaw clenched. "To be there faster. And perhaps… to draw it out. If it knows we're anticipating its ripple effects, it might be forced to reveal more." Her deepest fear, the safety of Kara, was the driving force. She knew the Glitch was benevolent, but its sheer power and unpredictability were terrifying. The who and why still eluded her, fueling her desperate need for answers.
Through the empathic link, I felt Kara's quiet observation of Alex. Kara watched her sister with a mixture of pride in Alex's brilliance and a subtle, protective anxiety. Kara fidgeted slightly, almost imperceptibly, when Alex spoke about "trapping" the Glitch. Kara's trust in the Glitch had deepened into a fervent belief in its good intentions, and the thought of it being constrained or harmed was unsettling to her. She wanted answers, yes, but on the Glitch's terms, not through a cage.
"Oh, Kara," I thought, a soft, almost imperceptible sigh escaping my lips. "If only you knew just how much I don't want to be caught. Not by her. Not by anyone." The game had just gotten a lot more complicated. My next moves would need to be surgical, my interventions even more cloaked in misdirection. The Unseen Architect theme was becoming less about my influence, and more about my precarious balance on the edge of discovery.
