Chapter 14: Ch 14: Helplessness_3
" KIRRRRRRRRR~KIIIRRRRRRR "
"THIS IS RED ALERT, I REPEAT, RED ALERT!"
In TARCIA, all high-ranking officers undergo military training, learning coded language to convey critical information without alerting enemies.
"RED" signals a major threat, and when reported via satellite phone, headquarters instantly understands and acts. But now, Marcus felt something was wrong—the reply was taking too long.
" KIRRRRR ~KIRRRRRR"
"Hfff… hfff… Captain, what's happening?" Kimot asked, panting as he glanced at Marcus's fearful expression, running with the boy in his arms.
"It can't be… the same situation isn't happening at headquarters, is it?"
Marcus thought, dread rising. If the infected had attacked headquarters, the entire police system would collapse—no orders, no coordination, no hope.
"CAPTAIN!?"
Kimot shouted, his voice sharp with panic, his face drenched in sweat.
"Nothing… hfff… help's coming soon,"
Marcus replied, snapping out of his thoughts at Kimot's yell, his answer laced with doubt.
"Grrraaa… graaaa…"
Three infected were closing in fast from behind. If they paused even for a moment, the monsters would be on them.
"Fast… fast… hfff!" Marcus shouted, fear stark on his face.
"Captain, turn… hfff… right! That alley leads to another route!" Kimot yelled from behind, his knowledge of narrow streets—gained from petty cases like finding lost dogs or cats—proving vital.
Trusting Kimot, Marcus leapt over a car's hood, took the boy from Kimot, and Kimot jumped just moments before the infected reached them.
"Grrraaaaa…"
"Hfff… hfff…" Kimot was doubly exhausted from carrying the boy.
"Nooooo… argghhhaaaaa!"
"Grttrrrrrrraaa…"
The agonizing screams of people echoed behind them. For the first time, Marcus and Kimot felt a deep shame for fleeing, saving themselves while abandoning others. They were powerless to do anything but run.
"Forgive me… I swear I'll bring you justice!" Marcus vowed, a fierce spark igniting in his eyes.
"Hfff… haaa… there, that way!" Kimot pointed to the alley's exit.
Marcus and Kimot, exhausted, emerged from the alley only to face another traffic-clogged road, this one far worse than before.
"Kyaaaaaa… noooooooo… argghhhaaa!"
"Grrrraaaaa…"
The entire road was swarming with infected. People fought desperately to survive, some shoving others toward the infected to save themselves.
" This....! "
"C-Captain… we won't survive until backup arrives!"
Kimot's courage shattered, his legs frozen at the sight of the gruesome carnage, unable to take another step.
Marcus's mind went blank, his eyes wide with shock, his ears deaf to Kimot's voice. He was traumatized, paralyzed by the horror.
Both were utterly gripped by fear.
"Am I going to die?" echoed in their souls.
Just then, a deafening sound rang in their ears.
BANG!
A gunshot rang out from their left, a few meters away. The sound of the bullet drew their attention away from the front, and looked to the left with hopeless eyes. They saw a man, about 40 years old, standing atop a car, surrounded by infected growling at him.
"Fuck!"
"That was my last bullet!" he shouted.
C-Captain… that's Jonathan Carter!" Kimot whispered in the dark, recognizing the man from occasional news appearances.
"Yeah… but he's surrounded by those monsters " Marcus said. For a fleeting moment, he felt a spark of hope for rescue, but seeing the infected circling Jonathan snuffed it out.
" He can't even save himself " Marcus thought
"Now… what do we do?" Kimot's mind was blank amidst the chaos, unable to think of a plan.
"All we can do now is hide,"
Marcus admitted, his spirit broken. Fighting the infected or saving anyone seemed futile—their bullets were useless, and they were nothing but walking prey for these monsters.
"THIS FUCKING Z-VIRUS IS SPREADING TOO FAST, AND THE GOVERNMENT'S SHIT NETWORK IS BUSY!"
Jonathan Carter roared, seething with rage atop the car. He stomped furiously, trapped like a prisoner, unable to move.
He knew if his foot slipped to the edge, the infected would grab his legs and drag him down. He stood in the center, eyes darting around, trying to stay safe until help arrived.
"Z-VIRUS!"
Marcus's ears perked up at the name, suspicion flaring. "Is all this chaos caused by a virus, and did the military know about it? "
And the same doubt struck Kimot. They locked eyes for a moment, unspoken understanding passing between them.
" If we can get some information about these monsters, we can fight them and take them down " Marcus thought and looked at Kimot and said
" We have to save Jonathan Carter"
Summoning his courage to save Carter. He needed to learn about this Z-Virus and fulfill the vow he'd made moments ago to bring justice.
"B-But, Captain, we could die trying!"
Kimot stammered, terrified by Marcus's rescue plan. All he wanted was to find a safe place to escape this nightmare.
"I know, Kimot, but I need to uncover the cause of this madness and take revenge on these monsters for those I fled from," Marcus said, his resolve hardened to save Carter.
Kimot felt a pang of shame. They'd abandoned people to die while saving themselves. Their pride demanded redemption. Anger sparked in his eyes, a desire for vengeance stirring within him.
"But the kid…"
Kimot hesitated, glancing at the boy with Marcus. If they went to rescue Carter, the child's life would be at risk.
"Hmm…"
Marcus looked at the boy, then scanned the surroundings. To his left, in a corner, he spotted a black car's trunk with no infected nearby. And He met Kimot's eyes and said, "We'll hide the kid in that car's trunk, rescue Carter, then come back for him."
"But, Captain, doesn't locking an 8-year-old in a trunk seem… cruel?" Kimot whispered near Marcus's ear, careful not to let the boy hear.
"Look around, Kimot—what's more cruel than this?"
Marcus countered, gesturing at the chaos. To him, the trunk wasn't cruelty—it was the safest place for the boy.
"…"
Kimot fell silent. Marcus was right; nothing could be worse than this horror.
" Let's go "
Marcus said softly, crouching down and taking the boy's hand. He moved toward the left, Kimot following cautiously, eyes darting around for any sudden infected attacks.
Seconds later, they reached the black car's trunk. Marcus scanned the area carefully, peered inside the car, and saw it was empty—no infected, no people, just abandoned. " They must've died or fled" he thought. He moved to the trunk, pressed the release button, and a soft sound followed.
CLICK!
Marcus gently lifted the trunk and placed the boy inside, saying, "Your father will come for you soon. Stay here, don't make a sound, okay, brave boy?"
The boy's face lit up when Marcus mentioned his father, recalling his father's promise to come for him. Trusting Marcus, he nodded.
"Okay, Uncle Officer."
"Good boy,"
Marcus said, gently closing the trunk.
Kimot's heart sank, seeing the boy's innocence amidst the horror.
"Alright, let's do it," Marcus said quietly to Kimot, crouching and moving forward.
