Chapter 457: Chapter 457: Surprise
The 'Gunsmith' felt like his luck was incredibly good. Initially, when his boss ordered him to carry out this mission, risking a possible ambush from the Cross, the Gunsmith had refused. However, the bounty was just too high. After much internal struggle and hesitation, he eventually agreed—after all, he needed to make a living!
Such a hefty bounty was too tempting to resist.
To make the mission easier, his considerate boss had even arranged for Fox to take the Cross's naive son out and distract the Cross.
With that in place, taking a small risk by going to New York to kill a police chief suddenly didn't seem so unacceptable. After all, the Cross was currently more focused on trying to rescue his brainless son from Sloan's manipulations rather than hunting down his fellow assassins.
Sloan had devised a genius plan by tricking the Cross's exceptionally talented son into turning against his father. The son had inherited his father's extraordinary skills, but sadly, not his intelligence. This made him the perfect weapon for the Brotherhood against the Cross. No matter how powerful the Cross was, it seemed unlikely he would ever harm his own son.
The son, having been brainwashed and completely entranced by Fox, was now set on avenging his so-called father, Mr. X, whom he mistakenly believed had been killed by the Cross. Fox had taken the young man on a mission to draw the Cross's attention while the Gunsmith snuck out of the Brotherhood's New Jersey hideout and into the heart of Manhattan, waiting for the police chief to show up.
Unexpectedly, things took an even better turn.
While waiting outside the 12th Precinct, the Gunsmith not only spotted his target, the police chief, but also her writer boyfriend, Castle, who had a bounty of five million dollars on his head. Reporting this to Sloan, his boss had generously added Castle to his hit list!
This was like money falling from the sky.
Dealing with a writer and a female police chief seemed easy. Despite not being known for his combat skills, the Gunsmith was confident that handling these two targets would be a breeze.
The thought of taking out both targets and walking away with five or six million dollars was enough to make the Gunsmith giddy with excitement.
The only thing that made him a bit uneasy was that the police chief had stayed inside the station for a while, and he feared the Cross might find him before he could finish the job.
Despite his nerves, he didn't dare to barge into the police station to assassinate the chief. Doing so would be a direct slap in the face to the NYPD, which wasn't something he was willing to do. So, the Gunsmith continued to wait outside, hoping his targets would appear soon.
His patience was finally rewarded when Castle left the station alone in his car. Without hesitation, the Gunsmith made a plan: kill Castle first, and there was no way the police chief wouldn't rush to the scene afterward. Then, he could take her out as well and collect both bounties.
Today must be his lucky day!
Not only would he eliminate two targets and make a huge amount of money, but he'd also do it while the Cross was causing chaos for the Brotherhood. Truly, fortune was smiling upon him.
However, the Gunsmith had no idea that his every move, down to the weapons he was carrying, had already been spotted by drones controlled by the chubby tech guy. Everything had been relayed to Castle, who was driving ahead, carefully laying a trap.
Normally, a seasoned assassin like the Gunsmith wouldn't make such rookie mistakes, but the recent pressure from the Cross had taken its toll on the Brotherhood. Their intelligence-gathering capabilities had significantly weakened. Additionally, the Gunsmith underestimated Castle, thinking he was just a civilian writer. Combined with his anxiety about being discovered by the Cross and the allure of a massive payday, the Gunsmith made the fatal mistake of following Castle into the trap he had set.
Castle, meanwhile, smoothly arrived at a secluded spot in Central Park. In constant communication with the drone operator, he leisurely chatted as the drones provided real-time updates on the Gunsmith's location. Despite the Gunsmith's self-assurance, Castle knew he was being followed closely and was ready for whatever came next.
Perhaps due to his overconfidence in his own abilities, the Gunsmith never questioned why Castle had driven to such a remote area of the park. Believing Castle to be walking right into his own death, the Gunsmith surveyed the surroundings, saw no sign of an ambush, and decided it was time to strike.
The secluded environment gave the Gunsmith the confidence he needed. Not only would he kill Castle, but the setting also provided the perfect spot to ambush the police chief once she arrived to investigate.
Eager to finish the job quickly and avoid being discovered by the Cross, the Gunsmith pulled out his carefully modified Browning M1911 handgun. This weapon, equipped with .45 caliber bullets and modified to hold 12 rounds instead of the standard 7, was capable of much greater accuracy and range than the typical 9mm Glock.
Seeing Castle about 100 meters ahead, the Gunsmith quickened his pace.
Castle, alerted by the drones to the Gunsmith's movements, immediately became more cautious. Knowing that the Gunsmith specialized in modifying firearms, Castle understood that the assassin's weapon would be far more dangerous than an ordinary gun. Aware of the superior range and firepower of the Browning M1911, Castle knew he couldn't afford to be careless.
Taking advantage of the park's dense tree cover, Castle discreetly retrieved two small devices from his inventory—enhanced flashbangs and stun grenades he had been tinkering with ever since the System had granted him the skills of a bomb expert. These weren't ordinary flashbangs but ones Castle had modified for greater impact, something he hadn't yet tested in real combat. Today seemed like the perfect opportunity.
Castle quietly planted the flashbangs and stun grenades along the path, hidden among the bushes, ready to go off if the Gunsmith got too close. Then, from his hidden inventory, Castle pulled out an HK416 rifle, fully loaded and ready for action.
In true Castle fashion, his weapon wasn't just any standard rifle. Like the FN SCAR in his car, this HK416 was decked out with every possible tactical accessory, including a dual-drum magazine for extra firepower. Holding the rifle, Castle grinned ominously, ready to give the Gunsmith a deadly surprise.
