Chapter 204: Kill a Chicken First_2
With that thought, he couldn't stay put any longer. He immediately pushed the door open and briskly walked to the office of the Director, knocking on the door.
"Come in."
After receiving a response, Muriel pushed the door open and entered, trying to temper his tone as he spoke, "Director David, I heard you want to reopen the investigation into the Rodrigozki case?"
The arrival of Muriel didn't surprise David, who nodded and responded, "That's right."
"Director David, I think you may not understand the complexity of this case. The Rodrigozki group comes from Bear Country and doesn't have a clear understanding of our tax bureau, and it took a huge effort for me to reach an agreement with them to pay Three Million US dollars in taxes every month..."
"Reach an agreement?"
David interrupted him, looking up.
Muriel, still unaware that he had misspoken, replied, "Yes."
David's expression turned cold as he said, "Deputy Chief Muriel, we are, after all, the Tax Bureau, and on top of that, we're in America. You actually made an agreement with a crime syndicate?"
David was familiar with Muriel's resume and knew that the deputy chief's capabilities were nothing special. If it weren't for the fact that the deputy chief was a confidant of the previous director, and they had needed him to lead the Western Suburb Branch before David and his team arrived, he would have already requested to have him removed.
"This..."
Muriel's face reddened slightly, and after a pause, he still retorted, "Regardless, the case is very complicated. The directive we received from the previous director was that it was most important to collect the taxes quickly. Everyone was doing it that way, and I had no other choice..."
Truth be told, Muriel felt somewhat aggrieved.
He was certainly aware that for a crime syndicate like Rodrigozki's to be paying only Three Million US dollars a month was far too little.
But he was under pressure due to performance appraisal periods, and he could hardly catch his breath.
So, taking in those Three Million was at least considered an achievement. If he continued to investigate, not only might he fail to collect the taxes, but he would also waste time. When another appraisal period came, he would be in even more trouble.
"What the previous director did is his business. Now that I'm in charge, we follow my rules. Don't worry about this case, I'll take responsibility for everything!"
Seeing how adamantly David spoke, Muriel's Adam's apple bobbed as he wanted to say something more, but in the end, he couldn't and simply sighed helplessly as he walked out.
At five o'clock in the afternoon, Hakim entered David's office and reported, "I've found out, Director. Rodrigozki is currently in Bear Country."
"Get him to fly back here immediately and tell him I want to have a talk with him!"
"This... Alright, I'll go notify them."
No sooner had Hakim left the office, the door was knocked on again, and David called out, "Come in."
The next second, Selina entered, asking, "You're looking well, Director David. How's everything going? You must have received quite a bit of news from the headquarters, right?"
David knew what she was referring to and replied, "You guessed it all, Selina. The headquarters sent me here indeed under pressure from the President."
Selina smiled lightly, then took off the bag she carried on her shoulder, pulled out a thick stack of files, and placed them in front of David.
David, somewhat puzzled, asked, "What's this?"
"Some information on various Hollywood film companies."
David narrowed his eyes slightly. Even though Selina only mentioned it was some information from the film companies, given her position and background, the information she gathered was certainly not ordinary.
After contemplating, he said, "Thank you, then. But now that you're here, have you thought about which department you want to be stationed at?"
Selina would certainly not have any extravagant expectations for positions like Chief Tax Officer or Tax Investigator, like those held by people such as Nisenbaki, so David really didn't know how to arrange things for her.
A cunning look flashed in Selina's eyes, and with a slight smile, she replied, "Don't you still lack a secretary?"
David looked at her intently, his gaze deepening.
In the Tax Bureau system, starting from the position of deputy head of a branch, one could enjoy the privilege of having a secretary. He had previously given careful consideration to selecting a secretary but had ultimately dismissed the idea.
The first reason for his dismissal was that there were currently no suitable candidates,
and secondly, a secretary isn't just any other position—it represents oneself, in other words, one's shadow.
As such, it had to be someone trustworthy, as appointing just anyone carried the risk that they might abuse their association with him, causing administrative chaos in the Western Suburbs.
After much thought, David decided to leave the position vacant for now. His main goal wasn't to focus on administrative tasks within the office—that was for Keanu and his team to handle. His priority was to increase tax revenue, and simple errand running could be assigned to people like Simmons Baki. Therefore, the secretary position wasn't an immediate concern.
"You don't have to look at me like that, Director David. Believe me, me serving as your secretary would definitely be more valuable than anyone else!"
Seeing David undecided, Selina continued to speak.
"Alright then, if you're willing, I have no problem with it."
Although David did not trust Selina completely, as the heiress of the Kennedy Family, she was definitely not someone who would pull strings or cause trouble using his name. There was no doubt about that.
