Chapter 6: The Echoes of Time
**
Jonathan's life had returned to its familiar rhythm, but the echoes of his journey lingered in the corners of his mind. He tried to move forward, to embrace the present, but something felt... incomplete. The memories of the alternate timelines he had created—and then erased—haunted him like fragments of a dream he couldn't quite piece together.
One evening, as he walked home from work, he noticed a strange figure standing under a streetlamp. The man was tall and wore a long coat, his face obscured by the shadow of a wide-brimmed hat. Jonathan's heart skipped a beat. It was **The Ambassador**.
Before Jonathan could speak, The Ambassador stepped forward, his voice calm but urgent. "Jonathan, we need to talk. The timeline is still unstable. Your actions have left... ripples."
Jonathan frowned, a mix of fear and frustration bubbling up inside him. "I thought I fixed it. I undid everything. What more do you want from me?"
The Ambassador's expression was unreadable. "You undid the changes, but the echoes remain. The timeline is like a tapestry, Jonathan. Even when you pull out a thread, the pattern is never quite the same. There are... anomalies."
"Anomalies?" Jonathan repeated, his voice rising. "What kind of anomalies?"
The Ambassador gestured for Jonathan to follow him. Reluctantly, Jonathan did. They walked in silence for a few minutes, until they reached a small park. The Ambassador stopped near a bench and pointed to a woman sitting there, reading a book. She looked familiar, but Jonathan couldn't place her.
"That's **Clara**," The Ambassador said. "In your original timeline, she never existed. She's a remnant of one of the alternate realities you created."
Jonathan stared at Clara, his mind racing. "What does that mean? Is she... real?"
"She's as real as you are," The Ambassador replied. "But she doesn't belong here. Her presence is a sign that the timeline is still fractured. And she's not the only one."
Jonathan felt a chill run down his spine. "How many are there?"
"A handful," The Ambassador said. "Most are unaware of their true nature, but their existence is a threat to the stability of reality. If they're not dealt with, the timeline could collapse entirely."
Jonathan's hands clenched into fists. "Dealt with? What are you saying? That we have to... erase them?"
The Ambassador's gaze was steady. "It's the only way. They don't belong here, Jonathan. Their presence is a mistake—one that you created."
Jonathan shook his head, a wave of guilt and anger washing over him. "No. I'm not doing that. I'm not responsible for this. You're the one who gave me this ability in the first place. Why didn't you warn me about this?"
The Ambassador's voice softened. "I tried to warn you, Jonathan. But you were so focused on fixing your own life that you didn't consider the bigger picture. Now, we're both paying the price."
Jonathan turned away, his mind a whirlwind of emotions. He didn't want to believe what The Ambassador was saying, but deep down, he knew it was true. He had been selfish, thinking only of his own regrets and desires. Now, innocent people were caught in the fallout.
"What do I need to do?" Jonathan asked finally, his voice heavy with resignation.
The Ambassador handed him a small, silver device. It looked like a pocket watch, but its surface was covered in intricate, glowing symbols. "This will help you identify the anomalies. When you find them, use it to send them back to their own timelines. It's the only way to restore balance."
Jonathan took the device, his hands trembling. "And what happens to them? Will they... remember any of this?"
The Ambassador shook his head. "They'll return to their own realities, as if none of this ever happened. It's the kindest way."
Jonathan nodded, though the weight of what he had to do felt unbearable. He looked back at Clara, who was still engrossed in her book. She looked so peaceful, so unaware of the chaos she was causing just by existing.
"I'll do it," Jonathan said quietly. "But this is the last time. After this, I'm done."
The Ambassador placed a hand on Jonathan's shoulder. "I understand. This is your final task, Jonathan. Once it's done, the timeline will be stable, and you can move on with your life."
As The Ambassador walked away, Jonathan stood there, clutching the device. He knew what he had to do, but the thought of it filled him with dread. He had spent so much time trying to fix his own mistakes, only to create new ones. Now, he had to face the consequences—not just for himself, but for everyone whose lives he had unwittingly altered.
