Chapter 59
“This is where we’ll be living…”
“Eurua, this place is amazing!”
Despite an unexpected visit from Saioji that exposed my plans while I was preparing our new home, I successfully arranged a place for Eurua and Aria to live. After safely entering through the southern gate of the royal capital, we passed by the brigade members and the team house without stopping, heading directly to the new residence I had prepared in the central district.
“What’s this sturdy box?”
“Oh, that’s a portable power supply. It’s a box filled with electricity.”
In the world of Asphial, it’s customary to wear shoes indoors, unlike in Japan where people usually walk around barefoot or in slippers. Even though the house had been cleaned when we received it, there was still dust and dirt on the floors.
At the brigade’s team house, we also lived with shoes on, but since it was set up more like a hotel, it didn’t feel out of place. However, now that I had purchased my own home and brought in various furnishings from Japan, I decided to implement a Japanese-style custom of taking off shoes at the entrance and walking around the house barefoot.
At first, Eurua and Aria seemed a little confused when I instructed them to take off their shoes at the entrance, but once they realized how clean the floors were, they quickly adapted.
After walking a short distance down the hallway, we entered a spacious living room. Though it was a single-story house, it was quite large. I had replaced the wooden windows with glass ones and installed curtains, allowing sunlight to pour in, making the room bright even without artificial lighting.
There were also several pieces of furniture that Saioji had recommended, like the large sofa in the center of the living room. However, Eurua, who had been following behind us, seemed particularly intrigued by a black box placed near the living room entrance.
“Electricity, huh…”
“Yeah, and it’s pretty durable, so it’s fine if you handle it a little roughly.”
Though I eventually wanted to install solar panels or a generator, I had prepared a portable power source, typically used in emergencies, that could provide enough electricity to cover the essentials, such as lighting. I had a few spares back at my house in Japan, which were currently charging.
Eurua seemed surprised when she heard the word “electricity,” but her curiosity was piqued by the strange, unfamiliar appearance of the device. It might be a good idea to teach her how to use the portable power supply later, considering it would be part of her daily life from now on.
“This is incredible! So soft!”
Unlike the cautious and observant Eurua, Aria, in her usual lively fashion, threw herself onto the large sofa in the center of the living room to test its comfort. From my perspective, with her childlike appearance, it was quite adorable, but Eurua, acting as her guardian, seemed flustered, watching nervously.
“This faucet—when you twist this handle, water comes out. If the water stops, just fill the tank in the garden, but make sure to clean it regularly. I’ll also give you some chemicals to prevent contamination.”
“Understood.”
As I kept an eye on Aria while she explored the house, I explained the various features of the home to Eurua. Despite the fact that literacy wasn’t very high in this world, Eurua meticulously wrote down everything I said on a piece of paper she had prepared herself, suggesting a methodical nature.
Though nothing was too complicated, it was still important to give proper instructions. It would be problematic if things were mishandled or if they were too afraid to use certain amenities.
There were several other rooms besides the living room. Of course, there were private rooms for myself, Eurua, and Aria, along with a study, a room for potion-making, and other useful spaces. The house also had a bath and toilet.
(I wish I could’ve installed a flush toilet…)
The bath was a Goemon-style tub, similar to what you’d find in Japan, but instead of using firewood, it was heated with special stones that radiated heat when infused with magic.
As for the toilet, I had hoped to install a flush system, but it was too difficult to do on my own, so it ended up being a drop-style toilet.
That being said, in typical fantasy world fashion, the tank that collected waste was home to several slimes, which made the setup much more convenient than expected. The slimes kept the smell minimal, and there was no need to manually dispose of the waste.
…Except for the unsettling squishing noises the slimes made beneath the toilet when they moved around while someone was using it.
