Chapter 4: Week 1: Day 4: Ryohei - The Day the Sakura Blooms Is a Day You Should Skip School
Saya was dreaming.
In her dream, she found herself in a vast savanna, dressed as an explorer. A pride of lions lounged nearby, and not far from them were a group of rhinos.
The scorching heat from the plains made her sweat profusely, so she decided to sit on a rock under a large tree. However, the rock was so hot it felt like her little behind was being grilled like yakiniku. She quickly pulled out a handkerchief, spread it out, and sat on it instead.
"So hot..." she muttered. A wave of heat shimmered the air in front of her, distorting her view. Saya unbuttoned her shirt a few notches and took off her hat to fan herself.
But then, suddenly...
"Huh?" A dark shadow loomed over her from behind. Saya froze, her body stiff with tension as she slowly turned her head, her neck feeling like it was locked in place. Her whole body was tense...and it all she saw...
A kangaroo?
Saya jolted awake, only to find herself staring directly into the face of a kangaroo, its body wrapped in flickering yellow flames, gazing intently at her.
Blinking in disbelief, Saya couldn't take her eyes off the fiery creature. She grabbed her phone and frantically dialed Reborn.
"...Reborn-san, there's... a kangaroo..."
"Oh, that's Garyu. It's Ryohei's kangaroo," Reborn replied nonchalantly. "He mentioned he was going for a run, so he sent it to help you out. Well, considering that this morning your house lit up with a blazing pillar of Sun Flames shooting straight into the sky, he probably noticed."
Reborn continued, "But he's still finishing his morning run, so give it a bit. He'll come pick you up soon enough."
At that moment, Saya realized her own body was glowing brilliantly with a radiant white light. A towering column of Sun Flames was erupting from her house, shining brightly into the sky and illuminating her home.
"..." Saya stared in stunned silence, turning her gaze to the open window. A strange smell wafted in, one that shouldn't have been there. Sweat dripped down her face as the Sun Flames made her feel as hot as the savanna she had just dreamed about.
"EXTREME!!!"
Saya's ears caught the distant voice of her senior, Ryohei, shouting with enthusiasm. Looking out into the distance, she saw the town of Namimori bathed in pink.
Indeed, thanks to the power of the Sun Flames, cherry blossoms had bloomed all over Namimori—even though winter was just around the corner.
Saya shivered inexplicably, a sudden sense of foreboding washing over her. Why did she feel like today might not be a good day to go to school?
After hanging up, the kangaroo, wearing boxing gloves, used its padded paws to press the remote and turn on Saya's TV. The news was reporting about cherry blossoms blooming all over Namimori City. Strangely enough, there wasn't any mention of the pillar of light from the Sun Flame, even though it was so bright and radiated intense heat.
Despite the extreme heat, the air conditioner, cold drinks, and even showers couldn't keep up. Saya had already set the air conditioner to lowest as she can, yet she was sweating profusely. This prompted Garyu to rummage for a towel to help dab Saya's sweat.
After turning on the mysterious TV, the kangaroo pulled out Saya's school uniform and ironed it, as the young girl was feeling dizzy from the heat. After her fifth shower and outfit change within an hour, senior Ryohei announced that he was almost at Saya's house. The kangaroo then gently seated her and began combing her hair before tying it up neatly into a high ponytail.
Ryohei's kangaroo was truly amazing! But how on earth could it manage to do all that while wearing gloves?
Once done, Gariu turned Saya around to check if everything was in order. Satisfied, it nodded firmly, its cheeks flushing a faint pink. Its single yellow eye curved into a crescent shape, and its mouth formed a proud and dreamy smile.
"Thank you so much, Garyu," Saya said. The boxing kangaroo then took out a piece of paper and a pen, scribbling something before handing it to her.
"So cute!" it wrote, with a small doodle of a kangaroo flashing a peace sign in the bottom-right corner. Saya chuckled softly at its effort and thanked it again. Then the two headed to the kitchen to prepare lunchboxes. Gariu proved to be quite an excellent kitchen assistant.
"Could you please take this out for me? I'm chopping onions right now," Saya asked. Garyu lifted the pot of soup off the gas stove. That day, she made a simple miso soup and tamagoyaki. The lunchbox consisted of chicken-and-egg rice bowls.
A soft chime from the doorbell made her rush to open it. Standing there was a young man with short, evenly trimmed white hair, tanned skin darker than Yamamoto's, and a small band-aid on his nose. He was dressed in a tracksuit with his hands wrapped in gauze, sweat dripping down his body.
It was Sasagawa Ryohei, the senior member of Namimori High's boxing club, and the older brother of Sasagawa Kyoko, Saya's sweet and kind classmate who was known as one of the school's most popular girls.
"Sorry I'm late, Saya-chan! I went for an extreme run! You're glowing with extreme brightness!" he said enthusiastically. Saya smiled gently and replied softly.
"Ah, it's fine… I've already made breakfast and lunchboxes just in case you're hungry."
"Totally extreme!" he exclaimed even louder. Saya, used to his spirited demeanor, didn't mind it at all. Instead, she found his high energy quite refreshing.
"Come on in," she said, stepping aside to let him in before closing the door.
"Thank you so much, Garyu," Ryohei said, to which the kangaroo raised its gloved paw in celebration. Then he added, "Hold out your hand, Saya-chan."
When she did, Ryohei ignited a flame and held her hand, causing the pillar of light to gradually fade. The sweltering heat that had soaked her in sweat slowly subsided.
Afterward, Ryohei and the kangaroo engaged in what seemed like an eating contest during breakfast. When they finished, Ryohei thanked her for the meal, and the kangaroo become a light and back to his brachium under a cloth.
Ryohei said, "Alright, back you go! We're heading to school soon." The kangaroo nodded and turned into a ball of fire, returning to Ryohei's upper arm.
Saya blinked in astonishment, baffled by how the entire kangaroo disappeared. Ryohei noticed her bewilderment and gave a small smile before laughing lightly in good spirits.
"Let's hurry to school before we're late!" he said.
"Is it really… okay?" Saya asked hesitantly, swallowing hard as Ryohei crouched down, offering his back for her to climb on. They had only fifteen minutes left before class started.
"This is the fastest way! Extreme sprinting!" he exclaimed, flashing a confident smile. The gleam from the corner of his teeth did little to ease Saya's worries.
"Um... alright. Sorry for the trouble," she said awkwardly, knowing she had no other choice. Once she climbed onto Ryohei's back, he stood up and turned his head slightly.
"Hold on tight!" As soon as he started running, Saya felt as though she had been launched backward by sheer force. She instinctively clung to his neck tightly.
The sensation was like riding a motorcycle that accelerated to 50 mph in a second he starts to run, then pushed further to 56 mph, possibly even reaching 63 mph. Ryohei's sprint left a cloud of dust and a trail of fluttering cherry blossom petals in their wake.
"Slow down a little!" Saya shrieked, her voice trembling. Less than ten minutes later, they arrived at Namimori High School. Ryohei glanced at his stopwatch and pressed the stop button, grinning broadly.
"Wow! Made it in under ten minutes—eight minutes and fifty seconds! Super extreme!"
Saya was so dizzy that her vision swirled like spirals. "I'll take you to your classroom!" Ryohei offered cheerfully.
'No, no, please don't…not again...please...'
"I-I can walk by myself," Saya stammered, only to freeze when she saw someone standing in front of the school building.
It was a tall boy with short black hair, slightly long bangs brushing over his sharp eyes. He wore the school's black uniform over a white shirt, adorned with a red and gold armband. His black slacks and matching belt completed the image of authority. This was none other than Hibari Kyoya, the head of the Disciplinary Committee.
Saya had heard rumors about him being dangerous, and something about his aura made her regret coming to school today. His piercing black eyes sent chills down her spine, even as she hid behind Ryohei. Hibari smirked faintly and flicked his wrist, causing a tonfa to extend from his right arm.
"You must be the one who made the cherry blossoms bloom," Hibari said coldly, his gaze sharp enough to pierce. "In that case, I'll bite you to death."
'W-What?! Bite me?! My flesh doesn't taste good, I swear!' Saya screamed inside
A small yellow bird perched on Hibari's shoulder flew off as if anticipating what was to come. Ryohei broke into a nervous sweat and glanced at Saya, who now looked like a rabbit about to be slaughtered. He quickly tried to reason with Hibari.
"Hey, wait, Hibari! Saya-chan didn't do it on purpose! She's new and was about to be late for class. Can't you let it slide just this once? She's only been here a week."
"That's none of my concern," Hibari replied coolly, raising his tonfa as if preparing to strike. At that moment, a strange yellow flame began to emanate from Saya's body. Both Ryohei and Hibari were taken aback. Acting on instinct, Hibari's tonfa ignited with a purple flame.
Before anyone could react further, the yellow flame from Saya's body was suddenly absorbed into Ryohei's arm.
A ball of light burst forth, and in its place appeared a boxing kangaroo clad in gloves and gear, complete with a gun-like apparatus strapped to its back.
"Hoooooo!" the kangaroo bellowed, raising its fists triumphantly.
"How did you come out on your own?!" Ryohei exclaimed, bewildered. Meanwhile, a purple glow emerged from Hibari's chest, materializing into a small porcupine surrounded by the same purple flames.
"Wait a second! You're not seriously going to fight, are you?!" Ryohei shouted.
"You called that thing out first," Hibari retorted, his tone indifferent. The tension between the two grew heavier, leaving Saya unsure of what to do.
"I-I'm sorry, Hibari-san," Saya stammered, her voice shaking. She felt she had to say something before the situation escalated. "I didn't mean to make the cherry blossoms bloom... I didn't know you hated them so much!"
Hibari remained silent, and Ryohei sighed. "Saya-chan, get down for now," he said. She nodded and slid off his back, quickly pulling out her phone to call Reborn while keeping a wary eye on Hibari.
Ryohei shifted into a boxer's stance, and Hibari looked ready to charge at any moment. Saya anxiously waited for Reborn to pick up, but no response came.
Just then, the sound of salvation echoed through the air.
"Alright, that's enough, both of you. If this keeps up, Saya-chan will be late for class," Reborn said, perched on a blooming cherry blossom branch. "It's not very professional for the Disciplinary Committee to delay students, now, is it?"
"You?" Hibari murmured, glancing up. Saya looked at Reborn as though he were an oasis in a desert.
"Reborn-san!" Saya cried out. Reborn leapt down from the branch and addressed Hibari.
"I have a proposal—something great for everyone involved," Reborn said before leaning close to whisper in Saya's ear. Her eyes widened in surprise.
"Will that really work?" she asked skeptically. It seemed far too simple.
"Trust me," Reborn reassured her. Saya nodded, then took a deep breath, clutching her chest to steel herself.
"Hibari-san, I'll make you lunch every day," she declared, her voice trembling. "Including weekends and holidays."
Everyone froze. Silence hung in the air until Ryohei sputtered, "W-What?!"
Hibari raised an eyebrow. "Every day?"
"Yes, every day. If you have any special requests, you can message me. I'll give you my number and app details," Saya said, desperate to seal the deal.
Hibari considered her offer for a moment before Saya quickly opened her bag and pulled out her own lunchbox, holding it out to him.
"Why don't you try it today? If you don't like it, we can work something out," she said with a nervous smile. "I promise there's no poison or anything dangerous in it."
"She's not an assassin, and her cooking is pretty good," Reborn added.
After several minutes of silence, during which Saya no longer dared to say anything more, Hibari walked past the small hedgehog and picked up the lunch box. "Come to the Disciplinary Committee's room during lunch."
"Y-Yes," Saya replied, then added, "I'll see you during lunch break then."
The little hedgehog turned into purple flames and returned to Hibari's left chest as he walked away, leaving Saya to let out a sigh of relief.
"Wasn't that your lunch?" Senpai Ryohei asked, and Saya turned to smile at him, putting her finger to her lips.
"Just something to make do with for now. I'll buy another one later. Thank you for today, Senpai Ryohei and Garyu."
The kangaroo blushed and smiled bashfully, while Ryohei was puzzled to see it rubbing its hands together and noticing its reddened cheeks. At the same time, he glanced at Saya's face and realized just how cute she was.
"That came out of nowhere," Ryohei said, turning to meet the gaze of the kangaroo. A spark of silent communication passed between them, like telepathy, as though they understood each other without words.
So this is your type, huh, buddy? But she's a human, you know.
Garyu hooted in excitement before looking at Saya with sparkling eyes.
Garyu's language: I like her! Go for it, Ryohei!
"Go for it with all my might!" Ryohei declared, raising his hand before turning to the kangaroo. "Like that would happen! You like her, so why are you telling me to go for it?"
Garyu's language: Because I'm a kangaroo, duh!
Then Garyu turned into a golden light and disappeared back into Ryohei's arm, leaving Saya puzzled.
"If there's nothing else, I'll take my leave now," Reborn said, walking off. "Oh, and that flame earlier—that's the Cloud Flame."
"Understood. I'll excuse myself then," Saya replied, bowing before heading back to class, exhausted and silently praying that the Cloud Flame would never manifest for her.
