Chapter 104: It's Not About Eating; It's About a Part-Time Job
"I'll notify them now; they should arrive by tomorrow," said Lu Yunque, glancing at his assistant. The assistant understood immediately and took out his phone to make a call.
The community was enormous. They had walked a long time and hadn't even reached the halfway point. The sun was now high in the sky, and this abandoned development had no shops— not even a place to buy a bottle of water.
"Hey, we should've rented an e-scooter before coming in," said Yun Zijin, regretting her oversight. "There's no village or store around, not even a small shop."
"E-scooter? What's that?" Li Yuecheng asked. If he didn't understand something, he didn't hesitate to inquire.
Yun Zijin sighed. The young master was indeed out of touch. "It's a basic commuting tool for workers. If you ride one, you'll never get stuck in traffic."
"No traffic jams? That sounds magical," Li Yuecheng said in surprise. He disliked being stuck in traffic as much as anyone. If an e-scooter could solve that, it was worth a try.
"Try it sometime; you'll love cutting through the streets smoothly," said Zijin.
Some assistants behind them had subtle expressions. Of course, the young master didn't know about e-scooters, but many of them likely did, perhaps even commuting by one daily.
"Sure, I'll try it if I get the chance," Li Yuecheng replied.
They continued through the community until noon, finally exiting through the back gate. Outside was an old street, relatively bustling, with several young people shopping around.
"What's this place?" asked Li Yuecheng.
"There are several universities nearby—this area is called the University Town. This famous food street is even livelier at night," Zijin explained.
"Then this land is valuable! The developer who abandoned it must not have been very smart. A college district and a vibrant food street nearby would've guaranteed plenty of residents," said Fu Ze, shaking his head.
"Who knows," shrugged Zijin. The land was hers now, and that was what mattered.
"Anyway, let's find a place to eat. Let me warn you first: the consumer base here is mainly college students, so there aren't many high-end restaurants. But there are decent, affordable spots with quiet atmospheres," Zijin said, concerned that these wealthy young masters and their assistants might not be used to simpler cuisine.
"It's fine," said Li Yuecheng. "We've eaten at street stalls before. Back in college, we couldn't always dine in luxury restaurants. We know how to adapt."
"That's great," said Zijin, relieved. "I'll take you to a well-known local restaurant."
Although she hadn't eaten in this area often, Zijin used to work part-time at a nearby eatery on weekends, so she knew which places were good. She used to work part-time to earn money and alleviate some of the orphanage's financial pressure.
After a short walk, they arrived at a modest but tidy restaurant.
"Hey! Is that Yun girl?" The shop owner recognized Zijin as soon as she saw her, but it had been a while, so she sounded a bit uncertain.
"Aunt Hongying, it's me!" Zijin greeted warmly. "These are my friends. I brought them to support your business!"
Zijin had worked part-time here during summer vacation and knew the owner well.
"Oh, they're all your friends? Wonderful, and so handsome too! Come, sit down! Here's the menu—order whatever you like," said Aunt Hongying enthusiastically. Although it was lunchtime and the place was busy, it was spacious enough for their large group.
"This is our first time here, Miss Yun. Any recommendations?" asked Lu Yunque, scanning the menu but unsure what to pick.
"These are Aunt Hongying's signature dishes," Zijin said, pointing out the top five on the left side. "If you're unsure, start with these."
"Then let's order those first," said Li Yuecheng, who decided to be adventurous. There were enough of them to handle a big meal.
"I'm fine with anything; you can order," Zijin insisted, leaving the task to them as she played the host role.
With efficiency, they chose their dishes, and the waiter swiftly took the order to the kitchen.
"Sister Zijin, did you used to eat here often?" Li Yuecheng asked curiously once the waiter left.
"It's not about eating, it's about working part-time," Zijin clarified. She saw no need to hide it; a little digging could uncover that she once worked here.
"Part-time?" Li Yuecheng was surprised. He hadn't expected that answer.
"Yes, remember, I grew up in an orphanage. Poor kids grow up fast. Working part-time while studying is common in orphanages," Zijin said matter-of-factly. The old director and Aunt Liao might not have agreed with them working outside, but they couldn't stop determined children from earning their own money.
"I see…" Li Yuecheng initially wanted to ask how Zijin suddenly became wealthy after struggling in her youth, but he held back. It wasn't appropriate.
"You want to know why I suddenly became rich?" Zijin asked, noticing his hesitation. "One minute I'm an intern struggling with part-time jobs, the next I'm buying property—of course it's suspicious."
No one else spoke. This touched on Zijin's privacy, and it wasn't their place to pry.
"It's not complicated, but the story's long," Zijin said lightly. "An elder I met by chance gave me a helping hand. I won't go into details."
"If you don't want to talk about it, don't," said Lu Yunque, sending a warning glance at Li Yuecheng. They shouldn't have asked such personal questions.
Zijin smiled and said nothing more.
At that moment, Aunt Hongying's voice rang out, "The food's here! Please enjoy!"
A waiter brought the first dishes—honey-glazed pork ribs and stir-fried seasonal vegetables. With so many people, two or three plates looked small, but more dishes were on the way. Everything was cooked fresh, so the service might be slow. People who came here knew to wait patiently.
"Aunt Hongying, take your time. We're not in a hurry," said Zijin, well aware of how the restaurant operated.
