Chapter 53: Chapter 53: Seeing a Doctor
Chen Cheng found it hard to believe that the man she once knew, the one who had gained weight from years of overwork, was balding, awkward in relationships, overly flattering to his superiors, and constantly stressing about houses, cars, and marriage, had somehow found his second wind.
Just this afternoon, when some students were arguing with the cafeteria staff, he had pulled her aside, saying it was best not to get involved or cause trouble.
But now? She had to admit, An Yuan looked really cool!
When a guy acknowledges that another guy is handsome, then he must really be handsome.
Still, she couldn't help but worry. What if An Yuan gets expelled? What if the school starts making things hard for him? What if…
"What are you overthinking for? No one knows I started it."
An Yuan turned around and saw the worry written all over her face. Instead, he reassured her. "Relax, it wasn't that big of a deal. No one even got hurt."
"…Alright then."
For some reason, Chen Cheng felt like An Yuan seemed a little more full of life than before.
After her worry faded, she started complaining instead. "Why didn't you let me go with you? I could only watch from the hallway!"
"What's the point of a girl going?"
"Are men any better! Hmph!"
"Yeah, yeah."
An Yuan brushed her off with a couple of half-hearted replies.
Due to the cafeteria incident, school ended early today, just after 8 p.m.
Students around them were still buzzing with excitement, their faces flushed with adrenaline as they walked like they had the wind at their backs.
According to them, they had practically demolished the cafeteria.
This was a story they'd be bragging about for at least ten years!
At the bike rack, An Yuan pushed his bike out, while Chen Cheng trailed behind him with small steps.
"Didn't you ride your bike today?"
"My stomach hurts. I don't feel like riding." She held her belly. "I've had diarrhea, I've already been to the restroom so many times."
"I'll take you to the community clinic."
Chen Cheng sat on the back of his bike, leaned her forehead against his back, and went quiet.
"Ready to go?"
"Mm."
An Yuan hesitated, carefully choosing his words, and said with a hint of guilt, "If you're really not feeling well… uh, I guess… you can, um, hold on to me if you need to."
The next moment, Chen Cheng's arm wrapped around him, her hands tucked into An Yuan's coat pockets, her upper body pressed tightly against his back.
"You said it yourself…"
"..."
Feeling the softness of her body against his, and the sweet scent of her surrounding him, An Yuan's heartbeat quickened. The rhythmic thump-thump-thump echoed in his ears.
Despite the chilly night breeze, which was just over 10°C, he felt strangely warm. His face heated up, so he subtly straightened his posture, shielding her from the wind.
"An Yuan, didn't you say you wouldn't get involved?"
"It turned into a full-blown food safety issue. If this happened ten years later, it'd definitely be trending on TikTok."
An Yuan answered righteously. He couldn't exactly say that he just lost his temper because he saw her feeling sick, could he?
"Huh? TikTok exists already? You should make an account and become an influencer!"
Chen Cheng's topic switch was completely out of nowhere.
"Not interested."
"You don't get it! You looked so badass just now! If you posted it on TikTok, you'd totally go viral!"
"Oh yeah?" An Yuan grinned, clearly in a good mood.
"Mhm! Too bad I forgot to record it!" Chen Cheng paused, then buried her face in his back, taking a deep breath. Her cheeks turned red as she continued, "You looked way better than your usual half-dead self!"
As soon as she took a couple of deep breaths against An Yuan's back, the pain in her stomach and the nausea in her gut seemed to ease a little. Her whole body relaxed.
"Well, what can I say? Before, I had to provide for a family. Now, I'm just an underage kid. If I lose control and do something reckless, at least there aren't any serious consequences."
"Must be nice~ I could only stand back and watch. If it were me, I'd probably chicken out."
"Different personalities."
An Yuan stopped the bike. Chen Cheng turned her head and realized that, while they were chatting, they had already arrived at the community clinic. The place she had been coming to for checkups since she was little.
Because of some childhood experiences, Chen Cheng had always hated hospitals and clinics. The moment she saw the entrance, her brows furrowed. "Let's just go to the pharmacy and buy some medicine for diarrhea…"
"It's better to get checked."
"Ugh~ I don't want to see a doctor~"
Without giving her a chance to argue, An Yuan grabbed her arm and dragged her inside. "It's not like you have a serious illness, what's there to be scared of?"
"That's exactly why we can just buy medicine! Why bother seeing a doctor?!"
Even though she resisted, her feet still slid along the ground as An Yuan pulled her step by step into the clinic.
As soon as the doctor and nurses inside looked up, Chen Cheng instantly dropped her defiance. She lowered her head shyly, quietly following behind An Yuan until they reached the doctor's desk.
She had gotten quite a few injections here before, painful ones. The moment she saw the doctor, she instinctively shrank back a little.
"She ate something bad," An Yuan explained, still holding onto her as he pressed her down onto a chair. "Diarrhea, nausea… but she hasn't thrown up yet."
"I haven't… I don't need an injection, right?"
Chen Cheng looked up at the doctor with puppy-dog eyes, her nervous gaze darting toward An Yuan, as if he could somehow protect her.
She was no stranger to an upset stomach. Back when she lived alone, she ate takeout every day, and there had been plenty of times when bad food made her sick.
For things like fevers, colds, or stomach issues, she was used to toughing it out. If it didn't get better in a few days, then she'd consider seeing a doctor.
After all those years of living alone, the only time she really had to go to the hospital was for rheumatoid arthritis. The joint pain lasted over a month and got so bad she couldn't even get out of bed. Since it seriously affected her daily life, she finally gave in and went to see a doctor, though she was very reluctant about it.
"It's nothing serious. Just take some medicine, and you'll be fine."
Hearing the doctor's words, Chen Cheng let out a huge sigh of relief.
As long as she doesn't need a shot!
"I told you we could've just bought medicine from the pharmacy…"
Before she could finish complaining, An Yuan smacked a hand on her head, messing up her short bob into a bird's nest. "Going to the doctor gives you peace of mind. Quit whining and go get your medicine."
"…Fine~"
As she grudgingly went to the counter, the doctor glanced at An Yuan. "Are you here to see a doctor too? You look a bit weak."
Oh crap, he ran into a shaman!
An Yuan's face instantly stiffened. He shot a wary glance at Chen Cheng, then lowered his voice, afraid she might hear, "No way. Don't talk nonsense. I play basketball every day during lunch, how could I be weak?"
"Just take it easy. A little moderation is good for your health."
How did this doctor know! So he's actually a genius doctor!
An Yuan's expression eased up. He had been a bit reckless lately, two or three times a day, burning through tissues at an alarming rate.
He was a 17 years old in his prime, full of energy and curiosity about the opposite sex, yet he spent his days hanging around a girl who was completely oblivious to how much she tempted him, whether intentionally or not.
The image of Chen Cheng in various poses had flashed through his mind countless times… At first, he felt guilty about it, but over time, the guilt faded. When it comes to this kind of thing, it's the actions that count, not the thoughts. If you were to judge by thoughts, then most guys would be perverts. The only ones who aren't… are eunuchs.
"An Yuan! Let's go!"
Chen Cheng had picked up her medicine and grabbed his hand, dragging him out of the clinic as if a nurse was chasing her with a giant syringe.
"Wait! Let me see a doctor too."
"Huh?"
"If you don't want to wait, just go outside first."
"Then I'll go buy a bottle of water."
