Chapter 40: 39. Ooo's Junkyard
"She was so into you," Jake said as Finn pointed in the direction they were headed.
Finn just rolled his eyes and gave no response. Yes, it could be that she was into him, but did it matter?
Finn now had more important things to think about than contemplating whether the princess liked him.
For instance, he could look around at all the piles of junk scattered in the area, like that broken Santa statue or even the very creepy smiling clown face.
'Very creepy,' he thought, quickly looking away and choosing to focus on the other heaps of junk and trash. He'd rather not test if his fears could for some odd reason turn into a strange event that would happen in the future.
There wasn't much to expect from a junk pile—just junk. And a whole lot of it.
"Hey, stop ignoring me!" Jake shouted nearby, and Finn glanced over, following the increased beeping of the machine he had built. Jake had kept up with his earlier conversation, trying to wrap Finn into it who was doing a great Job at ignoring him.
"Why don't we talk about how you're going to learn Korean so you can flirt with Lady Rainicorn?" Finn replied nonchalantly as he tapped the flickering screen, adjusting it while they navigated the piles of junk.
This was surprisingly had to do.
"Was that a tank?" Finn asked silently in mild amazement, but he moved on; unfortunately, it wasn't what he was looking for now. Still, it did look like it was in good condition.
Finn made sure to mark its location for later; it could have its uses. And the fact that he could have a tank was very cool.
Jake turned red and crossed his arms. "I have a good memory; it's just that I leave all the thinking to you."
His voice sounded slightly weak the more he explained. Finn could even see Jake further shrink the more he tried to talk, a genuinely interesting sight to see.
"It can't be that hard to learn a new language, and I have a plan."
Finn already didn't like the sound of that. The word "plan" sent a silent shiver down his spine, but he was wise enough not to ask questions. Or should he?
He just hoped that Jake's plan and the place he had in mind for Finn to learn Korean wouldn't be as dangerous as they often turned out to be.
His fingers were crossed!
But Finn felt Jake was underestimated how difficult it was to learn a new language from scratch. It was obviously not difficult for Finn though; he was an exception. But for someone with a low attention span like Jake, Finn wondered how long it would take. Maybe if magic were involved it would be easier.
Not surprisingly, the air smelled horrible the way they journeyed, and the only thing preventing Finn from constantly gagging was the hazmat suit he wore.
As they journeyed further into the junk pile, Finn had sensed a sort of danger tickling at the back of his neck.
He wasn't sure whether it was because the area itself was dangerous or if something specific triggered this feeling, but he remained on high alert, scanning everything that looked suspicious. Like for instance what Finn hoped to be already diffused bombs.
This place was truly dangerous.
He understood that he was in one of the most dangerous worlds out there, which made him wary of places or events that had never been specifically mentioned in the original show.
The fact that this world could potentially be an amalgamation of countless more dangerous worlds kept him up at night in a cold sweat.
The inclusion of the Hollow Knight world didn't make Finn feel any better, either.
Despite this, Finn tried to appreciate the strange beauty of the Trash Kingdom. The more he observed, the more he noticed certain patterns in how everything was arranged, like that miniature fountain pile or the broken ice cream machine pile.
Surprisingly, he also saw a river flowing through the place—a junk river—along with junk tires and a whole lot of other discarded items. A truly strange but interesting place now that Finn thought about it.
Finn began to wonder if this was a real kingdom. However, from his memories, he recalled not having seen any junk people. The raggedy princess herself wasn't a junk person, he thought.
"Finn, are we getting any closer?" Jake asked, clearly bored, and annoyed by the terrible smell. His nose had disappeared into his face, and Finn could only wonder how he was managing to breathe.
Finn felt mostly the same, but from what the machine was clearly indicating, they were close to where they needed to be. Hopefully, this will be a quick operation. In and out.
The place smelled horrible. That was something Finn would think about no matter how much time passed.
[Beep beep.]
"Yes, Jake, I think it's just up ahead," Finn said, noticing the increasing beeping sound the further they walked.
They eventually navigated the maze of trash until they reached a large pile filled with various electronics.
"That's it, Jake," Finn said loudly as he approached the pile. However, the uneasy feeling he had sensed earlier suddenly intensified, and his instincts went on high alert for reasons he couldn't understand.
Where was this danger coming from?
The Necronomicon spawned beside him silently, acting as a silent comfort as Finn and the unaware Jake went forward to search for their spoils.
Among the old computer parts, processors, monitors, and countless other items, Finn found increasingly useful components. The only real downside was that some of the parts were either rusted, broken, or in poor condition, but Finn was sure that with a long enough search, he could get whatever he needed. The main reason he came to the junkyard was the infinite possibility of what he might find, especially since he was broke.
He hoped to find strange robotic parts in the junkyard; discovering one of the decommissioned Mo's robots would be a dream for Finn—a dream that made him drool.
"What about this part, Finn?" Jake asked, turning to show what he held in his arms.
"Place it among the working pile," Finn replied, then continued his scavenging as the Necronomicon hovered beside him.
"Why is it suddenly dark all of a sudden?" Jake asked, looking up weirdly as if a shadow loomed above them while they were still working.
Finn moved instantly, abandoning the pile they had started to form as he jumped to the side and pushed Jake out of the way.
[Boom!]
A large trash bag landed heavily where they had been just moments before, rising a cloud of dust.
The bag exploded outwards on impact, scattering the garbage it contained.
Finn had sensed the danger the instant it was thrown there way, and at that moment, he rushed to Jake's side to push him away. It was another instinctual action.
He dusted himself off and turned to look at the supposed attacker who had been stalking them since the beginning of their journey.
And it was one ugly monster!!
