Adapting To Honkai

Chapter 21: Chapter 21

[Mei; Would you mind coming to my house tonight for dinner? My dad wants to see you and Kiana.]

I awoke to this message on my phone.

Rubbing my eyes, I let out a yawn as I got out of my bed. My fingers hovered over the phone screen, but I didn't type anything yet.

Now should I go to Mei's house?

I have suspicions about ME Corp, and Mei's dad was the CEO. There would be a chance he might have found out that I was related to the missing Honkai devices and wanted to ask me things.

And there was Kiana, who was supposed to be from a hidden family? Maybe Ryoma knows about that family?

Then again, that didn't make too much sense. He could just as easily send people to spy on me in my day to day life.

So most likely, Mei's explanation should true.

In that case, I gave my reply.

[Gojo: Sure. I'll be there.]

I turned off my phone and started to get ready for the day.

I sure love the days without any school.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When evening came, I booked a Homuber, this world's Uber ripoff, to Mei's house. While I could have drove over there myself, the 6pm jam is not something you want to drive in.

Plus, I saw that there were roadblocks going on. I don't feel like paying the underage driving tax.

The car soon arrived, but I noticed something. It's windows were tinted black. I rolled my shoulders back as I entered the car.

The driver wordlessly started going as soon as I got on. I fumbled around with some games on my phone, peeking outside the windows once in a while.

When the car got into a less populated area, it suddenly stopped.

The man driving turned around and then spoke to me. "Gojo Satoru. Would you like to become a person of power?"

"Huh?" I looked up at him. I blinked in 'surprise' as I pointed at myself. "Me?"

"Yes." The man said. "You just have to do something for me. Is that alright?"

I shifted slightly, like I was uncomfortable in my seat. "I-uh, I dunno. I'm pretty well off already..."

"But you don't have influence right? What if I told you, that the person behind me could give you all the influence you ever wanted?"

Drawing out such a big cake for me to eat?

I leaned in closer. "Who is this... person then?"

"You'll know if you agree..."

"Ah..."

The man seemed to take that as agreement. "Just put this outside the Raiden estate. Isn't that easy? We'll contact you again after that."

At that, he took out a very familiar object...

The honkai device...

I kept my expression steady. "Why can't you do it yourself though?"

"You don't need to ask that many questions kid. Do you want to or not? We can find someone else if you don't." The man said impatiently.

He was trying to do the 'limited time offer' trick on me.

"Huh..." I whispered as I closed my eyes. "That's pretty tempting...

But mister...

Have you ever thought that I could just get the information directly out of you?"

The man was dumbfounded at my statement for a moment, before a full-blown laugh erupted from it.

I didn't interrupt. I was just there. Watching him.

After a while of laughing, he wiped the tears from his eyes as he began to calm down. "You... you're serious?"

I was still just staring at him.

"Then I guess you're of no use then." He pressed on a button in his car with a sneer. "Get him boys."

A smile slowly appeared on my face as I saw men in tactical armour with guns walking over to the car.

The only thing I said in response, was one word.

"Cleave"

-----------------------------------------------

From the twisted wreckage of what used to be a car, a man dragged himself out but barely.

His arms trembled as he tried to crawl forward, nails clawing against the cracked asphalt. Snot and tears streamed down his face, his once-confident voice reduced to raw, panicked screams.

"Please! Please!!! Spare me!!!"

The ground around him was drenched in crimson, slick and gleaming under the streetlights. Shattered bits of tactical armor littered the area, some pieces still twitching, as if refusing to accept their wearer was already dead.

The scent of scorched metal and blood hung thick in the air.

Above it all, I hovered, feet never touching the ground.

Standing mid-air with Infinity, I watched him quietly, tossing the device between my hands.

Did I overdo it?

Nah. I still had dinner at Mei's later. Needed to stay presentable, after all.

At least I shouldn't smell like blood.

Good thing Infinity stops the icky bits from getting onto me.

"I'll tell you everything!! Just let me go!!!"

Oh yea, can't forget about this guy.

With the smile still on my face, I walked slowly towards him... deliberately.

"So tell me, who sent you?"

"It's Coco-" His voice got caught in his throat for a moment.

I put a hand on my chin as I looked at him. "C'mon now, spit it out. You were about to say Cocolia, weren't you."

The man looked at me with fear in his eyes. He began to scratch and claw at his throat as his eyes suddenly rolled to the back.

And then...

Boom

A large explosion engulfed me as the man exploded. I let out a sigh as the flames spread around me, blocked my Infinity.

There goes my lead I guess.

*Clunk*

Well at least it was exposure to a strong explosion. A silver lining in this shitty cloud.

As the smoke cleared up, I scratched the back of my head, the honkai device still in my hand.

I still planned on going to Mei's house but seriously.

What am I supposed to do with this thing?

I stared at it for a moment, before shrugging. I crushed it with my hand before dusting myself off, flames still licking at the edges of the car wreckage.

Cocolia...

The honkai device, the pulse at school, the ME Corp employee...

Was it you all along?

My phone buzzed in my pocket, causing me to take it out.

[Kiana; Ur late!! Whr r u now?]

[Gojo: Be there asap. Heavy jam]

I glanced at the wreckage again. I guess I'll be running there then.
