Chapter 86. Meddling in Affairs? The Wipes-Out-the-Entire-Village Kind (10)
Bai Weiwei and Luyi were prepared to face the numerous traps at the treasure site. In their minds, such a place hiding treasure couldn’t be easily accessed. Bai Weiwei held a sword that could cut through iron like mud, while her sleeves were stuffed with various antidote and healing pills. In short, she had prepared for every contingency, ensuring they could handle any dangers and guarantee the safety of all three.
Luyi’s preparations were much simpler and cruder. Shen Wan turned back, looking at Luyi with puzzlement. “Luyi, what’s in all those packages you’re carrying?”
“Water, dried food, and two changes of clothes,” Luyi explained straightforwardly. She had two bundles on her back and two more in her hands. “In case we fall into some trap or secret room, the water and food can sustain us for a while. The Palace Master likes cleanliness, so I brought her two extra sets of clothes.”
Luyi thought Shen Wan didn’t understand, so she explained her jianghu experience in detail.
Shen Wan: Actually, it’s unnecessary. Her brother 8 had already told her about all the traps and, with his super computing ability, had even explained various ways to disarm them. Honestly, she really had to thank brother 8 this time.
188: We’re all teammates, no need for thanks. Disarming traps is just a small matter.
While the two were well-prepared, Shen Wan still only carried her small bundle from before, with a kitchen knife at her waist. Bai Weiwei glanced at the knife, remembering when Shen Wan had used it to kill wild chickens and rabbits.
She had initially thought Shen Wan naively wanted to roam the jianghu with just a kitchen knife, but later realized the girl used it to hunt rabbits, chickens, and the like.
Shen Wan led them to the treasure’s hiding place, a seemingly remote mountain area. The entrance was strewn with rocks of various sizes and shapes. If Shen Wan hadn’t told them this was where the treasure was hidden, they wouldn’t have believed that such a place, overgrown with weeds and scattered with rocks, could conceal a treasure that had shaken the entire martial arts world.
As Shen Wan found the entrance, Bai Weiwei and Luyi felt somewhat nervous. Bai Weiwei placed her hand on Shen Wan’s shoulder, saying, “Be careful, the entrance might be dangerous.”
“You’re right, Miss Bai. Let’s move back a bit.”
Shen Wan seized the opportunity to grab Bai Weiwei’s hand. “Miss Bai, please strike the door area with your palm, then we’ll quickly move away.”
Bai Weiwei complied, striking the entrance with her palm. With a loud bang, Shen Wan pulled her away.
Several arrows shot out from where Bai Weiwei had struck, flying into the bushes. Bai Weiwei was slightly stunned, then heard Shen Wan say, “Miss Bai is truly prescient. Fortunately, we had you, or I might have been turned into a pincushion by those arrows.”
“Shall we go in then?”
Bai Weiwei grasped Shen Wan’s wrist in return. “Let’s be careful.”
Whenever Bai Weiwei cautioned about potential danger, Shen Wan would use her kitchen knife to strike at certain spots, then pull Bai Weiwei aside to hide. Subsequently, dangerous situations would occur at those spots, like the arrows that had flown out at the entrance.
They were now passing through a very narrow passage. This corridor was extremely long, and Bai Weiwei felt something was amiss. Watching Shen Wan hack away with her kitchen knife, she felt uneasy and quickly moved to stop her. “There are traps everywhere here, don’t move recklessly.”
“You’re right, Miss Bai. Let’s walk through slowly then.”
Bai Weiwei had a feeling that something would happen after Shen Wan’s words. Then she heard what sounded like massive iron mechanisms moving.
As soon as the sound appeared, Luyi exclaimed, “Palace Master, hurry! The walls on both sides seem to be moving!”
Without thinking, Bai Weiwei released Shen Wan’s hand and wrapped an arm around her waist. She called out to Luyi, and using her lightness skill, quickly moved forward with Shen Wan. However, the narrow passage was incredibly long, and Bai Weiwei couldn’t see an end. Sharp blades had emerged from both walls, constantly moving inward.
The slow, heavy movement actually made her heart race faster. But she didn’t stop, nor did she let go of Shen Wan. Using all her inner strength, she strove to carry Shen Wan forward.
Shen Wan heard Bai Weiwei’s accelerated heartbeat and comforted her, “Don’t worry, Miss Bai. You’re beautiful and kind-hearted, so we won’t be in danger.”
Hearing this, Bai Weiwei nearly stumbled and fell.
To hell with being beautiful and kind-hearted! Not in danger?!
Was this the time for jokes? Weren’t they in danger now? The passage was of unknown length, and even though the walls moved slowly, they were in danger as long as they hadn’t exited this place.
Her martial arts were formidable, but facing such a situation, she didn’t know how long she could endure.
But not long after Shen Wan’s words, the heavy, slow sound ceased.
“Pa-Palace Master, the walls on both sides seem to have stopped moving.”
Bai Weiwei was surprised. She glanced at Shen Wan, who was clinging to her waist, but still carried her swiftly forward. After an unknown time, they finally exited the narrow space. At the end, Bai Weiwei was being pulled by Shen Wan to look at something.
“This mechanism has fallen into disrepair over time. It got stuck halfway through and seems to have lost a couple of parts,” Shen Wan pointed to a spot and said, “I told you earlier, Miss Bai, that you’re beautiful and kind-hearted, so we definitely wouldn’t be in danger.”
Bai Weiwei examined the broken parts, which were covered in rust, and the jammed areas. It did seem to be as Shen Wan described. This time, she was inclined to believe Shen Wan’s words. Could it be that she really was beautiful and kind-hearted? Bai Weiwei quickly shook her head. How could that be possible? Something still felt off.
She carefully recalled Shen Wan entering the narrow passage, tapping here and there with her kitchen knife. Looking down, she noticed some dust that had fallen to the ground, and her eyes narrowed slightly. She examined the parts again, touching them and even striking them with her sword. Her sword was considered a treasure, yet it only left slight marks on the small parts.
“Miss Bai, we should be close now.”
“Miss Bai, please calm down. You were scared earlier, but these mechanisms have paid a heavy price over the years. Just striking them a couple of times is enough. Now that they’ve fallen, they can never serve their purpose again. It’s quite pitiful to see.”
Hearing these seemingly foolish words, Bai Weiwei smiled slightly and set aside her doubts. She allowed Shen Wan to lead her by the hand, her beautiful eyes no longer lingering on the small parts scattered on the ground. Luyi quickly followed with her bundles, feeling that something was amiss about the two people in front of her.
Half an hour later, Bai Weiwei stood rooted to the spot, staring at the chests of gold and silver treasures before her.
Had Shen Wan really found this?
Luyi, also amazed by the countless treasures, quickly dropped her three bundles. She crouched beside a chest, looking at the glittering gold inside, momentarily speechless. Although she had never lacked for money following the Palace Master, given her ability to accumulate wealth, she had surely amassed a fortune over the years.
But what the Palace Master had earned couldn’t compare to even a fraction of what was here.
After the two were stunned for a moment, they heard a rustling sound. Bai Weiwei quickly looked around and saw Shen Wan in a corner, her bottom sticking up as she rummaged through something. She hurried over, placing her delicate hand on Shen Wan’s shoulder. “What are you doing?”
“Don’t misunderstand, Miss Bai. I said I wouldn’t take a single coin, and I won’t. I’m just looking at these excellent medicinal herbs. I’m checking if any have gone bad. This should be what Miss Bai is most concerned about, right?”
Bai Weiwei glanced at Shen Wan’s hands and saw her holding a jade box containing an old ginseng root. With her keen eye, she could tell that this treasure site had been specially treated, as had the jade box, allowing the ginseng to be preserved until now. After a brief look, she nodded and said, “It hasn’t gone bad. Close it up.”
Shen Wan quickly closed the box. “Miss Bai, have your people arrived yet? We should move these things quickly. It probably won’t be long before others from the martial arts world find this place. If we haven’t moved everything by then, it could cause countless disputes and great losses for you.”
Bai Weiwei was internally troubled. Where could she find the manpower?
For such a big task, she couldn’t just hire an escort agency, could she?
The people in escort agencies were also part of the martial arts world. Now that everyone knew about the treasure, wouldn’t that be exposing themselves?
“Miss Bai, is the Water Cloud Palace far from here?”
Bai Weiwei nodded, “Yes, it’s far.”
“That’s bad. Even if you send a message for people to come, they probably won’t make it in time.”
Bai Weiwei’s heart stirred. Why did she feel like Shen Wan had thought of some solution?
“It’s best to move these things quickly before someone finds this place,” Shen Wan said softly. “I have a way to call people to help us move the items, openly and aboveboard.”
Bai Weiwei was curious. “What way?”
Shen Wan beckoned to her, and Bai Weiwei leaned in close. Two different fresh scents mingled, making Luyi, who stood to the side, feel a bit dizzy. She only knew that Shen Wan was whispering something, but couldn’t hear what was said. However, she could see some strange expressions on the Palace Master’s face, and finally, a hint of amusement.
This amusement made her curious. What kind of solution had Shen Wan come up with to make the Palace Master so happy?
After explaining her plan, Shen Wan told Bai Weiwei and Luyi to wait there while she went out alone.
About half an hour later, she returned, saying she had brought everything they needed. A bewildered Luyi and a curious Bai Weiwei followed her out. Outside, they saw many ox carts, but only the carts, no oxen. There were also piles of red silk cloth nearby, looking very festive.
“Miss Bai, next we’ll wrap all the treasure in this red silk and load it onto these ox carts.”
Bai Weiwei didn’t ask where these things came from. She picked up the red silk and walked inside.
The three of them quickly wrapped over a hundred chests in red silk. These chests contained gold, silver, jewels, swords, books, and martial arts manuals. There was a wide variety, but they didn’t examine them closely. The most important thing now was to move these items away.
As Bai Weiwei and Luyi were carrying out a chest, they saw Shen Wan effortlessly carrying two chests by herself, smiling as she walked outside.
The two didn’t know how to react. Luyi asked in a trembling voice, “Palace Master, doesn’t Shen Wan lack inner strength?”
“She does. I’ve checked,” Bai Weiwei answered seriously, her voice not particularly quiet.
Shen Wan, carrying two chests, nearly stumbled. Wife, what do you mean you’ve checked? They’ve only held hands. She shouldn’t say such things carelessly.
“Then why can someone as small as Shen Wan carry two chests by herself?” Luyi found it unbelievable. These things were genuinely heavy.
Bai Weiwei’s eyes twinkled with amusement. “Perhaps she’s naturally strong.”
After a while, all the silk-wrapped chests were securely tied to the ox carts. Shen Wan then took out two more bundles and handed them to Bai Weiwei and Luyi.
They opened the bundles and were stunned.
Bai Weiwei looked at the festive red bridal gown and some headdresses in her bundle, puzzled. She looked at Shen Wan, “What are we doing?”
“Miss Bai, please go change in the carriage. This is a bride’s attire. The people I’ve hired will be here soon. We can’t let them notice anything amiss.”
“What about me? Do I need to change too?” The clothes in Luyi’s bundle weren’t a red bridal gown, but they were equally colorful and beautiful.
Shen Wan replied, “Of course you need to change. Look at how dirty you are. How can you be a dowry maid like that?”
“Dowry?” Luyi was confused. Dowry?
Then she saw Shen Wan grab a bundle and run into the cave. Soon after, a small gentleman in red festive clothes emerged. Looking at Bai Weiwei, he showed a mouthful of neat, white teeth. “Miss Bai, hurry and change. Didn’t we agree earlier?”
Bai Weiwei pursed her lips. “I thought I was the groom.”
“At this point, does it matter who’s the groom?”
After changing into the festive clothes, Bai Weiwei sat in the carriage and didn’t come out.
Soon after, she heard the sound of many footsteps. Her heart tightened, and she lifted the carriage curtain to see many strong young men.
“Thank you all for your trouble.”
“Young master, it’s no problem. What happened to you?”
Shen Wan sighed, “What else could have happened? My wife’s home is far from mine, and these mountain roads are difficult to travel. The oxen got here, became thirsty and hungry, broke free from their ropes, and returned to the great forest to live a happy life, abandoning my wife and me in this wilderness. We originally had a horse too, but when that beast saw the oxen run off, it also broke free from its reins and galloped away. We couldn’t catch it even if we tried.”
Luyi stood beside the carriage, finally understanding what was happening. She glanced at Bai Weiwei through the carriage curtain and whispered, “Palace Master, this is too ridiculous.”
“But it works well. Who would think that all this wedding dowry is actually treasure from the mountain?”
Luyi: Well… that’s true.
188: He had really underestimated his host.
Shen Wan: Never mind, never mind. She’s about to marry her wife!
