Chapter 89
The placement method is exactly the same as the Survival Training. Blindfold your eyes and follow the guidance of the professor and teaching assistants.
However, unlike Survival Training, you must remove the blindfold only after the broadcast starts. Otherwise, you will be immediately eliminated, so they warned us to be cautious.
[The trial will begin shortly. All students, please complete your preparations.]
The broadcast echoed. I removed the stifling blindfold and looked around at the surrounding scenery.
“Wow… Is this… magic?”
Just like Lee Yeonju’s admiration, the surrounding scenery was breathtakingly impressive.
The scenery itself looked like an ordinary village. Not quite a city, but a thriving village.
Houses were built here and there, and in the distance, a massive windmill caught my eye. The dense forest was a bonus.
To an uninformed observer, it might just seem like a decent village, but all of this was a magical illusion.
“It’s magic. The principle must be the same as what we saw in the Special Sparring Arena. But to recreate it on such a large scale…”
Grace, too, genuinely admired the neatly implemented village scene.
Since she was well-versed in magic, she seemed to immediately grasp how extraordinary this magic was.
While they were marveling, I looked around. In the distance, I noticed a blue barrier that seemed to be the Mana Field.
It might be safe for now, but the Mana Field is expected to gradually shrink. Before that, we need to either obtain a map or climb to a high place to understand the terrain.
“Let’s head to that house first. According to the professors, there should be various collected items there.”
“Alright.”
Still, it’s best to listen to the leader. Slowly formulating a strategy isn’t a bad idea.
I followed Grace and headed straight to the house right in front of us. At first glance, it resembled a Medieval European-style wooden house.
Creak-
I carefully entered the house. Just in case, I was the one to enter first, not Grace.
I thought it was just the exterior, but the inside had everything you’d expect. From tables to fireplaces and various other furniture.
We marveled at the sight once again and thoroughly searched the interior. The fact that even the inside was recreated was truly obsessive.
“Hmm? Ah! This looks like a map.”
Rummaging through the table drawer, Lee Yeonju seemed to have found a map. Grace and I headed over to her.
The map was neither too big nor too small. It was inconvenient to carry around without a bag.
Upon examining the map, the overall layout was, as expected, a village.
However, there were areas where houses were clustered together and others where they were not, with a massive windmill placed at the center.
“Hmm… We’ll need to go outside to figure out our position. Come to think of it, there seems to be a windmill outside.”
“Grace, do you know how to read maps?”
“…Roughly?”
Grace answered in a voice lacking confidence. She didn’t seem certain.
The same was true for Lee Yeonju. After all, there aren’t that many situations where one needs to read a map.
Perhaps it would only be useful for soldiers or explorers. Moreover, maps from this era are often unreliable.
“It would be better to first figure out the direction. Let’s see if we can find a compass. There should still be plenty of collected items left.”
“Alright.”
Following Grace’s instructions, we began searching every corner of the house again. Since it was the inner area rather than the outer area, quite a lot of things turned up.
We found the compass mentioned earlier, a backpack with ample storage space, and most of the items needed for a Battle Royale.
I also found one thing, though it looked like nothing more than a fist-sized stone.
I should probably ask the team about this. Holding the stone in my hand, I returned to the center.
“Grace.”
“Huh? Did you find something?”
“This.”
I showed Grace the stone. Both Grace and Lee Yeonju looked at it with curious eyes.
Grace took the stone from me and examined it closely. Then, as if she discovered something, her eyes widened slightly.
“There’s a button here?”
Click-
Unable to resist her curiosity, Grace pressed the button. The moment she pressed it, I had a bad feeling.
My Wild Instinct quietly whispered to me: throw it out the window immediately.
Trusting my instincts, I snatched the stone from Grace right away.
Crash!
And then I hurled it out the window. Since the house was magically recreated, the sound of wood breaking could be heard.
“W-What are you doing…!”
Grace hadn’t even fully processed my sudden action when—
Bang!
A large explosion occurred from the stone I threw outside.
While not a massive explosion, it was powerful enough to knock out several people.
No wonder it looked like a grenade. With such a loud noise, it seems we need to leave this house.
“…We should be careful of traps too.”
“Y-Yeah…”
Grace was momentarily flustered by the explosion but quickly regained her composure. She seemed quite capable.
Especially for someone like me who lacks attack rights, such weapons would be very useful. It seems important to figure out if there are more of these.
“Let’s move to another location first. The noise must have drawn attention from other teams.”
“How about heading toward the windmill?”
“That’s difficult. The windmill is too conspicuous, so at least one team is bound to go there. Let’s move to a house a bit farther away for now.”
Grace made a surprisingly wise decision, pinpointing the key points of a Battle Royale.
Following her judgment, we left the original house and moved to another one. Luckily, we didn’t encounter any other teams along the way.
“Here’s another strange stone. It looks longer than the last one…”
Bang!
“Ahhh!”
“M-My eyes…!”
See, why press the button again? It’s like she’s a cat brimming with curiosity.
Still, thanks to that, we discovered that the elongated stone had an effect similar to a flash grenade.
Additionally, through diligent looting, we managed to find various tools, and I mainly acquired weapons.
As I mentioned earlier, since we were in the inner area rather than the outer area, the quality was quite decent. Among them, I naturally picked up an axe.
[The Mana Field is moving.]
After looting a few times, the Mana Field had already started to shift. Since we were inside the Mana Field, there was no need to move.
On the other hand, those outside would need to hurry. As soon as Grace heard the broadcast, she gave us instructions.
“Let’s stay here for now. It would be good to set up traps.”
“Got it.”
“Huh?”
“Ah, nothing…”
Lee Yeonju, who had casually responded, immediately shrank back. It seemed she had grown comfortable with Grace after spending so much time together.
Grace, surprised by her own reaction, had unintentionally given off a stern impression, leading to a misunderstanding. They were quite an amusing pair in many ways.
“Mr. Sivar, could you scout near the windmill for a bit? There might be better items there. If you see anyone, run away immediately.”
“Alright.”
“Please make sure to remember our house. If anything happens, I’ll detonate a bomb right away.”
Having prepared for contingencies, I cautiously stepped outside and looked toward the windmill.
Due to the nature of the windmill, the surrounding area was an open field. If anyone approached, it would be easy to spot them.
Even for me, getting too close to the windmill would likely get me noticed. I needed to make this quick.
‘I wonder if anyone’s there?’
There could be a team lucky enough to start at the windmill. I tried to stay as hidden as possible as I approached the windmill.
Every now and then, I heard the sound of explosions in the distance, but I ignored them. That wasn’t important right now.
Finally, as I got closer to the windmill, I noticed something on the ground.
‘Trampled marks…’
Though not exactly footprints, there were clear signs of something being stepped on, leading directly to the windmill.
It seemed like someone was inside the windmill. In fact, it would be stranger if no one was there.
Following Grace’s instructions, I could just run away, but now that I was here, I wanted to test something.
Since I could only defend and not attack, I wanted to find a clever way to use that defense.
Without hesitation, I headed toward the windmill. Its blades were spinning vigorously.
‘It’s too obvious.’
When I glanced at the window installed at the center of the windmill, someone’s face briefly came into view.
They tried hard to hide their body to avoid being noticed, but in that fleeting moment, they were completely exposed.
[Hey. It’s that guy. What do we do?]
[What do you mean, what do we do? That guy can’t attack anyway.]
[While I fight at the front, you guys provide support from the back. Then we can catch him.]
Even their conversation, which reached my ears, was heard in its entirety.
It’s not that they were ignoring my heightened senses; they simply didn’t know about them. Normally, I wouldn’t be able to hear this.
Soon, I reached the door of the windmill and used Presence Detection to figure out how many people were inside.
‘Exactly four.’
Considering they just mentioned “you guys,” it must be two close-range fighters and two ranged attackers.
I quietly opened the door and stepped inside. The interior of the windmill was filled with structures of various mechanical forms.
“Now!”
“Ice, pierce through!”
“Flaming spear!”
As soon as I opened the door, incantations rang in my ears. Just as I expected, mages were waiting above near the ceiling.
Having two mages was a surprisingly decent combination. However, they had made a critical mistake.
Thud!
“Gah?!”
The moment the magic was launched, I grabbed the collar of the person hiding behind the door.
It seemed they had been waiting behind the door to deliver the final blow the moment the magic hit me, but their plan was far too sloppy.
Using the warrior waiting behind the door as a “shield” was much faster than the speed at which the magic was cast.
Thud! Whoosh!
“Aaargh!”
The warrior’s body was struck by the Ice Spear, and multiple flaming arrows embedded themselves in him.
While it wouldn’t kill him, I skillfully maneuvered the human shield so the attacks would hit only the most painful spots.
Squelch—
Perhaps due to the pain, the warrior eventually went limp and collapsed. A Protective Barrier began to envelop his body.
“Th-that…!”
“Didn’t he just attack? What the hell is that…!”
The students were horrified at the sight of me using a human shield. I firmly responded to them.
“It wasn’t an attack.”
I had not attacked at all.
“It was defense.”
You were the ones who caused a team kill.
