Chapter 8: Chapter 8 the Kings Gift?
Beginning
Akio sat hunched over his workbench, his hands trembling with excitement as he placed the final piece into the delicate contraption he had worked tirelessly on for two months. He held it up with a victorious grin on his face, exclaiming, "Yes! I did it! I created my third mid-rank magic tool and the last I need for this project!"
The small object in his hands was a magical storage device, capable of storing information—essentially a magical replacement for a hard drive. His desk was cluttered with three other items: an Arcane Interface Screen, a Magic Crystal Processor, and the storage device. These were the core components of his greatest invention yet.
"They're here," he muttered to himself, piecing everything together. His hands moved quickly as he connected the pieces, his mind racing with possibilities. "My computers!" With a final click, he inserted a magic crystal into the processor. The machine lit up, whirring as the processor hummed to life. Akio's laughter echoed through the room as he marveled at the sight. It was working!
He sprinted downstairs to explain to his father and the workers at the factory. He couldn't wait to show them what he had accomplished. The excitement bubbled out of him as he explained how far he had come. "Give me one month," he said, his voice filled with determination. "I want to program the basic structure of it—like a wiki page, a notes app, and a few other basic programs. It won't be able to send information yet, but it will work for the basic functions!"
Mid Part
The next 29 days were a blur of work. Akio barely slept, dedicating himself entirely to his programming. Every day, he would be hunched over his desk, furiously scribbling runes and magical symbols in his notebooks while muttering under his breath. As he worked on the programming, he would talk through each part of the process aloud.
"Okay, the first part is simple. I need to store the data in the memory crystal. For this, I'll use the Etheric Rune to bind the data to the crystal's surface. This way, I can retrieve it when I need it." He paused, looking over his notes. "Next, I'll need to create the basic structure of the operating system. It'll be a simple interface with a command prompt. I'll use Light Manipulation magic to create the visual display on the Arcane Interface Screen."
As the days passed, Akio found himself refining his magic skills, improving his understanding of how to combine traditional programming with magical techniques. He used Mana Sigils to create an effective input-output system, allowing the computer to respond to commands. Finally, after days of focus and effort, he was ready.
Akio copied all of the programming onto a new memory drive. It took him a full day, carefully and meticulously transferring the data. When it was complete, he walked over to his father to explain everything.
"Father, I've done it," Akio said, holding up the drive. "I've programmed a basic operating system. I've even designed it to be expandable, so future updates will be easy to implement. And I've already made a second one for you, as promised."
His father looked at him, impressed but still guarded. "You've done well, Akio. But you're still young. The kingdom expects a lot from you. Don't forget that."
Akio nodded, feeling a surge of pride. "I won't forget."
Next, he made arrangements with a merchant who worked as a middleman between mages, magic engineers, and alchemists. Akio spent a considerable amount of money hiring a group of magic engineers to help him produce the three mid-rank magical items needed for his computer. He drew up a non-disclosure agreement, ensuring that the engineers would keep the details of his project secret.
Then, Akio hired around 30 regular workers to help with the more mundane aspects of the computer's construction—assembling the mechanical parts and putting together the overall structure. The assembly line began to take shape, and Akio's dream was slowly becoming a reality.
Latter Part
The day of the king's visit arrived. Akio stood in his workshop, looking over the final preparations for his project. His father had insisted that they meet the king's entourage in the main hall, so Akio joined him there, excitement and nerves swirling inside of him.
The king entered with five individuals behind him. Akio's father stood tall, his eyes narrowing slightly as he sized up the group.
The king smiled warmly at Akio. "I'm pleased to see you've been busy, Akio. These are the people I've brought to help you."
He gestured to the first person, a man in his mid-30s with neatly combed hair and a dignified air. "This is John Mocohy, a noble from a baron family. He's a high-grade alchemist, second from the top of his class at the academy. I've arranged for him to work with you and help you produce potions."
John smiled and bowed slightly. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Akio. I look forward to working with you."
The king moved on to the second person, a young woman who looked confident and strong. "This is Samantha Teletor, a combat mage from a count family. She's reached the 6th level of magic. She's here to help you train in combat magic."
Samantha nodded curtly. "I'll be your sparring partner. Don't hold back."
Next, the king pointed to a young man with a friendly smile. "This is Tonks Tanker, a commoner who graduated top of his class at the academy. He's the third-best magic engineer in the kingdom, and he'll be working with you to improve your magic engineering."
Tonks gave Akio a thumbs up. "I've heard a lot about you. Let's make some magic happen."
The king then introduced a middle-aged man with a warm smile. "This is Baron Gordon von Ramsey, a master of cooking magic. He's here because the kingdom has a tradition that I'm sure you're aware of, Akio. In this kingdom, it is believed that the way to a woman's heart is through her stomach. The tradition holds that a man should cook a meal for his fiancée before marriage. The baron is here to help you with that."
Akio blinked in surprise, but the baron smiled warmly. "It's an honor to assist you, young one."
Finally, the king pointed to a poised and elegant elf. "This is Lily Monshroom, a 7th level magician. She specializes in production magic and will be taking your younger brother under her wing. He's a rare talent, and she'll help him hone his skills."
Lily nodded gracefully. "Your brother is quite gifted. I look forward to working with him."
The king turned to Akio and his father. "These people will assist you, Akio. They're here to help with your development, as well as the kingdom's. I trust you'll repay our investments tenfold in the future."
Akio stood silently for a moment, the weight of the king's words settling on his shoulders. "I will. I won't let you down."
With that, the king and his entourage left, and Akio stood in the hall, more determined than ever. The pieces were falling into place. Now, it was time to build his future—and the kingdom's.
