Chapter 277: Perspective

"You're a monster!" the Jenny spat. I shook my head "I'm no monster, I take no joy in this nor do I inflict needless suffering on the innocent. These people are the true monsters, I merely hunt them." I said and she got quiet. "Not the nicest argument but I must admit it does ring with a bit of truth to it." Byron said with a sigh. "It's easy to look at my actions and think me evil or monstrous but for some gods awful reason people have trouble looking at the good it does. Hoenns at an all time low on criminal activity and it is almost entirely my doing." I said and the Jenny was clearly struggling with that knowledge.-

I sighed "Look I get that my way of doing things is absolutely cruel and harsh but you need to understand that the soft method failed. You barely contained the criminals to the shadows and like a wound that never got treatment they festered and started to spread. At this point it's better to cut out the infected part and try to heal properly this time." I said seriously to the Jenny before walking away.-

I remember playing the games and wondering why the teams could even form in the first place with how openly they committed crimes but after getting to this world I understood. The punishments for crime was laughable here and served little good deterring people from taking that route. 'Oh no I guess I'll go to prison for a bit with three good meals and a safe place to sleep since I was caught.' this was the average criminals thoughts on their "punishment". As much as I enjoy the generally nice and friendly nature of this worlds humans they were TOO nice in this regard.-

Fact was that this soft approach didn't work all that well. Sure I'll admit that none of the criminals WANT to get caught and thus tend to stick to the shadows for their ill deeds but if it came down to it they would walk into a prison with smiles if they did get caught. I wasn't the first person to take a hard stance on crime either as Juan and many others were well known for killing any criminals they found in their territories.-

The only difference in our approached was that I felt it necessary to inflict the same cruelty on my criminals as they themselves inflicted. I was also horrifically effective at wiping out criminals as well in comparison. Juan had thousands of bodies under his belt during his decades of time dealing with criminals but it took me less than a year to wrack up a similar body count. This difference was like accidentally touching a hot stove, sudden and painful. And much like when you touch a hot stove on accident the world recoiled. I had little doubt that the world would adapt to this sudden stimulus but for now I was doing great work keeping the criminals at bay.-

It only took about an hour for the "battlefield" to be cleared of bodies but getting rid of the blood was not really possible fully. They got most of it but there was still a few bits they missed, not that I was going to point it out. I spent most of that time off to the side meditating as I waited for them to give me the go ahead to leave. While it was more or less a formality at this point rules were rules and I wasn't going to break them needlessly.-

I mean honestly I wasn't exactly on a schedule or anything so waiting a bit didn't cause me any inconvenience. I also sort of created a bit of a spectacle by using my [lord circulation] like this as the skill caused the minute particles of aura in the surroundings to become visible as they were drawn into my body. From an outside point of view it was as if I was drawing in tiny blue stars with every breath, in other words magical as fuck. "If you are done making the rest of us non aura users jealous you can go now" Byron said with a chuckle at the end of this time.

I opened my eye and stood up. "If my mere meditation is enough to make you folks jealous you should see the stuff I can do with it." I said jokingly. He chuckled at that "I've seen enough reports on the things you've done to have an idea. A shame that aura use isn't standard knowledge, we'd probably grow greatly if that were the case." he said with a sigh. "Perhaps at first but after a generation or two it would put us right back to where we are right now. The only difference would be the level we operated on." I said honestly.-

I of course wasn't going to explain that I based this idea off of what Rayquaza told me back in Hoenn about the many different civilizations that humans have had. Learning that all it took was one wrong move for the entire civilization of the world to restart and that that exact thing had happened many times told me that with or without aura use being a common practice made no difference.-

A bit pessimistic perhaps but when a being that can be considered a god tells you these things it's hard to look at it in a positive light. The worse part was that just from the events of the games you could see the truth of Rayquaza's words. Team Rocket, Galactic, Aqua, Magma, so many examples of humans fucking around with civilization ending forces carelessly. Sure in the games everything works out because a "savior" appears to foil their plans but this was reality and nothing was set in stone like a game. I had already seen this myself when both May and Brendan got Treecko as their starters when in the game May ALWAYS got the opposite type starter to what Brendan got. -

There were more examples as well such as me being the one who set things right with Aqua and Magma rather than Brendan. Sure the argument could be made that I was a force from outside this world but the key factor here was that I had subverted "fate" easily. If I could do that I see no reason why someone else in this world couldn't do the same since the system only gave me stuff from this world to use.
