A multiverse story: The Quintessence

Chapter 8: seven

The team stood in mount justice meeting room, the echoes of their last mission still fresh in their minds. Robin leaned over the console, pulling up schematics of a suspected villain hideout on the outskirts of Gotham.

"Another lead on Cadmus?" Aqualad asked, his arms crossed as he studied the images.

"Nope," Robin said, his fingers dancing across the keys. "Something else entirely. This place doesn't scream 'cloning,' but we've got intel about some... weird tech experiments going on here. Could be a splinter group."

Kid Flash leaned over Robin's shoulder, a grin playing on his lips. "Weird tech, huh? Sounds like my kind of fun."

Superboy, standing stoically at the back, grunted. "If it's connected to Cadmus, we need to shut it down."

Robin nodded. "Exactly. We can't let them pull another stunt like what they did with you." He pointed at the map. "The facility's underground, and it's guarded by drones and automated defenses. No sign of human activity, but we're not taking any chances."

Natasha watched them from the polybodies' hidden surveillance network, perched on the edge of her seat. "Oooooh, they think they're sneaky! Just wait 'til they see what's waiting for them!" she giggled, earning a smirk from Kamaria.

---

The facility was eerily quiet when the team arrived. Dark corridors stretched endlessly, illuminated only by flickering fluorescent lights. The hum of machinery echoed in the background.

"Creepy," Kid Flash muttered, zipping ahead to scout. "Just a bunch of robots so far. No mad scientists twirling mustaches."

Aqualad followed cautiously, his water-bearers at the ready. "Stay alert. This might be a distraction."

As if on cue, a group of heavily armed combat drones emerged from hidden compartments in the walls. Their metallic frames gleamed under the dim lights, and their red sensor eyes locked onto the team.

"Here we go!" Robin shouted, tossing a smoke bomb to obscure their position.

The battle was chaotic. Robin and Aqualad worked together to dismantle the drones, their movements fluid and precise. Superboy used his brute strength to smash through them, while Kid Flash darted around, taking out key components before the drones could react.

But as the last drone fell, a slow clap echoed through the facility. The team froze, turning toward the sound.

From the shadows stepped a figure—a humanoid with bright blue fur, downward-facing quills, and piercing red eyes. His muscular frame radiated power, and his every movement was unnaturally fast, even as he walked casually into the light.

"Uh... guys?" Kid Flash said, his voice wavering. "That's not a robot."

Superboy stepped forward, his fists clenched. "Who are you?"

The figure didn't answer. Instead, he smirked—and then he was gone.

A sudden blur zipped through the team, knocking them off balance. Kid Flash barely managed to catch a glimpse of the figure before he was struck and sent sprawling.

"He's fast!" Kid Flash groaned, picking himself up.

"Not faster than me," he muttered before taking off in pursuit.

The blue blur stopped just long enough for Kid Flash to catch up. But when he did, Sonic turned and grabbed him by the arm, slamming him into the wall with a force that left a dent in the metal.

"Not bad," Sonic said, his voice low and mocking. "But you're not fast enough."

Superboy leaped into action, tackling Sonic into the ground. The floor cracked under their combined weight. Sonic grunted but quickly retaliated, kicking Superboy off him with a force that sent the clone flying across the room.

Aqualad and Robin tried to coordinate an attack, but Sonic was too fast, dodging their strikes with ease. He countered with superhuman strength, sending both heroes crashing into the walls.

Kid Flash rejoined the fight, using his speed to land a flurry of punches. For a moment, it seemed to work—until Sonic caught one of his punches mid-strike.

"Nice try," Sonic said, smirking. With a flick of his wrist, he threw Kid Flash across the room.

Superboy, now enraged, charged again. This time, he managed to land a solid punch, sending Sonic skidding back. But the blue blur recovered instantly, his red eyes glowing with intensity.

"You're strong," Sonic admitted, brushing himself off. "But not strong enough."

The fight continued, with the team working together to try and bring him down. But Sonic was relentless, his speed and strength overwhelming. It wasn't until a faint beeping sound echoed in the room that he stopped, glancing at his wrist.

"Time's up," he said.

Before the team could react, Sonic's body shimmered, and he disappeared in a flash of light.

Back at their hideout, the polybodies watched the footage with varying reactions.

"He handled them like toddlers," Shikamaru said, smirking.

"Of course he did," Natasha said, spinning around in her chair. "He's our Sonic! Did you see how he tossed Kid Flash? Hilarious!"

Kamaria shook her head. "He's powerful, but they're not going to give up. The Justice League will get involved now."

Charles stroked his chin thoughtfully. "Good. Let them. The more they focus on him, the less they'll focus on us."

Richard leaned back, a satisfied grin on his face. "And now we know how well he performs in the field. It's time to move to phase two."

As the screen went to static, Natasha clapped her hands. "Oooh, phase two! This is gonna be fun!"
