A DIVINE FOOL

Chapter 4: THE FOOL'S ESCAPE

Chapter 4: "The Fool's Escape"

---

The Ominous Figure

The shadowed figure atop the distant tower remained, unmoving, its gaze fixed directly on Yuki. A sense of unease crawled up his spine as his eyes locked with the mysterious figure, a presence so chilling that it felt as if time itself had paused. The wind around him began to whip and swirl, the air thick with tension.

"Who… who is that?" Yuki whispered under his breath, taking a cautious step backward, away from the arena's edge. His hand instinctively brushed over the artifact resting inside his chest, as though seeking comfort from its invisible power.

Buzzzy, still buzzing nervously around him, seemed to sense the looming danger as well. "Yuki, you've really done it now! That person… they're not just a random cultivator. That's no mortal! There's something about them… something I can't quite identify."

Yuki squinted, his eyes narrowing. The figure's presence felt almost divine, yet filled with malice. Despite being so far away, the figure radiated a palpable aura of power, one that made the hairs on Yuki's neck stand on end. The air grew heavier as if it were saturated with an overwhelming force.

"Should we… should we run?" Yuki asked, his voice laced with a mix of fear and confusion.

Buzzzy's mechanical wings fluttered frantically, and the little drone's voice shook. "We can't run! If that person wanted to attack, they would have already done it. But if they're coming here, you need to be ready. The artifact can't protect you forever, and from the way they're watching, they know something we don't."

Yuki's head spun. He had just barely survived Zarek's overwhelming challenge, and now this—whatever this new threat was, it wasn't something he could ignore. Yet, deep down, he couldn't shake the feeling that somehow, this was all part of some grand, twisted game, and he was merely a pawn caught in the middle.

The Elder's Warning

The elder's footsteps echoed in the silence of the arena as he approached, his face unreadable but his eyes sharp. He surveyed the distant figure with an unsettling calm. The aura around him seemed to have grown denser, more oppressive, as if the very air were charged with tension. The elder's lips parted in a sigh.

"That's… someone we cannot ignore," the elder said, his voice low and gravelly, more to himself than to Yuki. "It seems fate is already aligning itself against you, whether you are ready or not."

Yuki looked up at the elder in confusion. "What do you mean? Who is that person?"

The elder's expression hardened, his gaze narrowing as he focused on the figure in the distance. "That is one of the Celestial Overseers, beings who transcend even the gods themselves. They exist beyond time, beyond realms. Their very existence is a mystery, and they rarely interfere in mortal matters. But when they do, it's never for a good reason."

"W-What do they want with me?" Yuki stammered, his voice trembling. He had faced off against a champion of the gods, but now the stakes were even higher. It felt as if he had been thrown into the deep end of a vast, unforgiving ocean, with nothing to hold onto but his luck.

The elder turned to face him, his eyes hard. "You've awakened the Divine Artifact, and that alone has caused ripples across the realms. The gods, the Celestial Overseers… they have watched you. They know that your existence is a threat to their carefully woven order. And that's why they're coming for you now."

Yuki gulped, his hands shaking. "You mean I can't even catch a break? I just want to figure out what's going on!"

The elder gave him a pitying glance. "You should have known that this was never going to be simple. And now, you must make a choice. Whether you live or die will depend on what you do next."

The Arrival of the Overseer

The figure atop the tower stirred. With a single, fluid motion, they began to descend, their form shifting through the air with unnatural speed. As they drew closer, the overwhelming presence they exuded became more palpable, like a heavy weight pressing down on Yuki's chest.

The ground beneath Yuki's feet seemed to tremble with each step the Overseer took. With every passing second, Yuki's pulse quickened. The figure's face remained hidden beneath the shadow of their cloak, but the power radiating from them was undeniable. The closer they came, the more Yuki could feel the energy crackling in the air.

The elder stiffened, his eyes now narrowed with a hint of fear that he had not shown before. "You have two choices, Yuki Fushiwara," he said, his voice serious and strained. "Run, or face the consequences of the artifact's power."

Yuki hesitated, glancing back toward the distant horizon, where the towering structures of the cultivation city lay. He didn't have the skills or knowledge to face someone like this. What was he even supposed to do? The artifact might protect him for now, but it wasn't a guarantee that it would always save him. And what if this being before him was too much for even the artifact to handle?

"I don't even know what's going on!" Yuki finally exclaimed, frustration rising in his chest. "I didn't ask for any of this! I didn't ask for the artifact, or for these challenges, or for all of these people wanting to kill me!"

Buzzzy hovered around his head, its voice soft but filled with empathy. "I know you didn't ask for it, Yuki. But sometimes, life doesn't give us a choice. You'll have to learn quickly. You've survived this far—don't give up now."

Before Yuki could respond, the ground trembled again as the Overseer's figure appeared in front of them, standing tall and imposing. The air around them crackled with energy, and Yuki instinctively took a step back, his breath hitching in his throat. The figure stood still for a moment, observing him, and Yuki felt an eerie silence fall over the arena.

Then, in a voice that resonated with both authority and an otherworldly edge, the Overseer spoke.

"Yuki Fushiwara. You are the fool who has chosen to meddle with powers far beyond your comprehension." The voice sounded as if it was coming from every direction at once, vibrating through the very air. "You have awakened the Divine Artifact, a relic of unimaginable power, and by doing so, you have set events in motion that cannot be undone. Your existence now disrupts the natural order."

Yuki's knees wobbled as he tried to remain composed. The sheer weight of the Overseer's words felt like a crushing force.

"What do you want from me?" Yuki finally found his voice, desperation creeping into his words. "I don't even know what's going on, I just… I just found it! The artifact… it chose me!"

The Overseer's piercing gaze seemed to study him, and for a moment, Yuki swore he saw a flicker of something like amusement beneath the cold, impervious expression.

"You misunderstand," the Overseer said, their voice now almost... pitying. "You are not chosen by the artifact, fool. The artifact is using you, just as the gods and forces beyond your comprehension will use you. You are merely a vessel, a pawn in a game far greater than your insignificant life."

Yuki's stomach churned. The Overseer's words seemed to penetrate deep into his soul, shaking his very foundation.

"I don't want to be anyone's pawn!" Yuki shouted, his voice rising in defiance. "I didn't ask for this! I don't care about your game, and I'm not going to let anyone control me!"

The Overseer's lips curled into a slight, knowing smirk, and they took a step forward. "Bold words, fool. But your fate has already been sealed. It is not for you to decide."

In an instant, the Overseer raised their hand, summoning a wave of dark energy that swirled around them. The power was palpable, so dense that the very air seemed to crack under its pressure. Yuki's heart raced, and for the first time in his life, he feared that his luck had finally run out.

---

The Artifact's Will

But just as the energy from the Overseer was about to strike, something unexpected happened. The artifact inside Yuki's chest pulsed with a blinding light, a wave of pure energy radiating outward. The artifact's power surged through Yuki's body, enveloping him in a cocoon of golden light.

The Overseer recoiled slightly, their expression now filled with both intrigue and irritation. "So, the artifact's will has chosen to protect you once more," they murmured, their eyes narrowing.

Yuki stood within the shimmering cocoon of light, barely able to comprehend what was happening. The artifact was acting on its own, shielding him from the Overseer's power. The sensation was overwhelming, as if the very fabric of the universe was bending to the will of the artifact.

Buzzzy floated beside him, its voice filled with awe. "Yuki, the artifact is reacting to the Overseer! It's… it's protecting you!"

For the first time since all this chaos had begun, Yuki felt a glimmer of hope. He might not understand what was happening, or why the artifact had chosen him, but for now, he was alive. And that was enough.

The Overseer's gaze hardened. "Do not think this victory is permanent, fool. You cannot hide forever. The gods are watching you, and sooner or later, you will be forced to face the consequences of your actions."

And with that, the Overseer vanished into thin air, leaving behind nothing but a lingering sense of foreboding.

The Escape

The golden aura around Yuki began to dissipate, and he staggered forward, his heart still racing. The tension in the air slowly eased, but the events of the last few moments weighed heavily on him.

"Yuki, you did it!" Buzzzy chirped excitedly. "That was amazing! You actually survived!"

Yuki took a deep breath, his legs shaking from the sheer adrenaline. "I don't know how I did it. But I'm not going to lie, I'm exhausted. And I don't think this is over."

Buzzzy nodded gravely. "No, it's far from over. The Celestial Overseers won't give up that easily, and the gods are watching you closely now. The artifact's power will protect you, but only for so long."

Yuki clenched his fists. "Then I guess I'd better figure out how to use this power before they come back."

As he turned to leave the arena, his thoughts were a whirlwind of confusion and fear. What had he gotten himself into? But one thing was certain—his journey had only just begun.

Cliffhanger:

As Yuki walked away, a new voice echoed in his mind, a voice he had never heard before—cold, ancient, and filled with power.

"The artifact has chosen, and fate has been rewritten. But your true test lies ahead, Yuki Fushiwara."
