Chapter 32: Extracurricular Demonstration
In the midst of Fein and Claire's busy camp committee, Fein was asked to be a member of the basketball club just for a demonstration of the club in front of the 10th graders. Given that Fein had participated in a match against seniors before and he played very well.
Mr. George wanted Fein to play to show that their basketball club was quite talented in front of the new students. Introducing them by playing just one game.
At first Fein wanted to refuse, because he himself was not part of the basketball extracurricular. But Mr. George promised Fein a perfect score in gym class if Fein would accept.
"Come on. Just play until time runs out. It's only 40-50 minutes, not hard, right? Plus I'll make your sports grade perfect on your graduation report card, how about it?" asked Mr. George trying to persuade Fein to accept it.
"Hmn... Interesting, but there's no taste at all if it's like that. Only perfect grades in sports I can also do," replied Fein turning to leave his sports teacher.
"If you can win. I'll buy you ice cream! One dozen ice creams, how about it?"
Fein's steps suddenly stopped, he turned around and smiled. "Agreed."
The appointed day arrived, that day there were many extracurricular demonstrations held that day. There was baseball, soccer, chess and others. One of the most highlighted was basketball.
Many girls were already preparing to watch their seniors play basketball. Each team was given a different color ribbon tied around their arm to distinguish the team they were in.
The blue team played against the red team, Fein being the leader of the red team. Before the game, Fein had talked to Claire that he would follow later to take care of their duties as a committee. It turned out that there were still many things they had to do again after the Head of the Student Council tidied up all the data and there were still things left behind.
"Estimated only 40-50 minutes of play, after that I'll catch up with you, or you can wait for me to finish playing," said Fein who was tying a red ribbon on his arm.
"Alright, I'll just wait and watch. After all, you should definitely rest first, it's quite tiring," replied Claire, helping to tie the red ribbon on Fein's arm.
Since the man seemed to be having trouble tying it himself, Claire immediately pushed Fein's hand away and tied the ribbon.
"You should have told me if it was difficult," he said.
Fein was silent as he watched Claire who was focused on tying the ribbon on his arm.
"That's it, the others must be waiting. Don't embarrass me by losing this game, I don't want to have a loser partner."
"Heh, I can't lose," Fein said and went to the field.
Claire nodded and went to the audience seats. Sitting with the other students.
Before long, the match began. Fein caught the ball that was thrown up, and with his tall body, he managed to grab the ball and take it to the enemy hoop. Together with his teammates, he managed to score even in the early minutes.
The girls cheered at Fein's actions. During the game, Fein was the center of their attention. Claire could hear the girls talking about his partner.
"That purple-haired senior is so cool, I really admire him. He's tall and very strong!" praised one of the students.
"Right! I heard his name is Fein, the female seniors keep shouting his name!"
"Fein? Ahh his name is as cool as his person. Does he have a girlfriend already?"
The female students were completely mesmerized by the charisma Fein exuded during the game.
Even when Fein combed his hair back that was wet with sweat, the screams of the female students sounded so loud.
"Kyaaaaaa!!! Feeiiinnnn!!!"
"Cheer up senior Fein, we love youuuu!!!" they exclaimed excitedly.
"You have a lot of fans too, Fein. It looks like after this you'll be surrounded by girls right away," one of the basketball members commented.
"Heh... They're just disturbing my concentration..." Fein muttered looking at the enthusiastic female students.
When his eyes glanced in one direction, a female student felt that Fein was watching her. But her friend said that Fein was watching her. They made a fuss just because of that. What Fein saw was Claire sitting near them, watching the game.
'I admit you're very good, Fein. Let's win this game,' Claire thought at the time.
During the 30th minute of the game, Fein fell due to a collision with an opposing member and the ball was snatched away. That made the girls very surprised, especially since their points were evenly matched.
'Oh my... He fell down. Get up, Fein. Don't let them win!' Claire exclaimed in his mind.
It didn't take long for Fein to get up and jump, blocking the ball from going into his team's basket. The ball was successfully swatted away and caught by the other red team.
The blonde student carrying the ball was immediately blocked by the blue team from passing anywhere near their basket.
"Alex, throw the ball to me!" shouted Fein when he was near the opposing team's basket.
"Fein!" Alex threw the ball to Fein.
The basketball bounced high and was caught by Fein. With three steps forward, Fein jumped and put the ball into the blue team's basket.
The red team earned a point for their success. At the same time, the whistle blew for the end of the third half.
The score is now 45 for the red team and 43 for the blue team. The last round was left, this would determine who the winner of this game would be. Although this was just an extracurricular demonstration, they were very excited to play and win in this game.
"This is the last round... You have to win, Fein. Make them not look at you anymore!" muttered Claire.
The game resumed and the last 10 minutes were intense. Each team was trying their hardest to keep their spots from being conceded again. The blue team tried to even the score with the red team, but it seemed like the red team had improved their performance from before.
The breath of the audience seemed to be held watching the very tense game.
And in the last second of the game, it turned out that the red team managed to score their last point and win the game with 46 points.
"YEAAAYYYYY!!!" The girls cheered happily as the red team won the game.
The gymnasium became very crowded because of the screams of the students who were so happy.
"How noisy," Fein muttered.
"We won!!! We won!!!" exclaimed the other red team members hugging each other, they even pulled Fein into it.
"H-hey... Don't bring me too!"
Claire who saw all that could only smile, he got up from the chair and left the gym.
After escaping from the other members' embrace, Fein looked in the direction where Claire was sitting earlier. But the man was no longer there. "Claire?"
Without thinking, he ran out of the gymnasium looking for her. He wondered, did Claire not watch the final match earlier and just left?
"Hufft... That sucks. That ending was good. Why did he just leave?" he said while trying to catch his breath.
Suddenly, a group of female students immediately surrounded Fein. They congratulated and wanted to shake hands with Fein.
Fein, who didn't like crowds, tried to get away from them. But they kept blocking his way. There were so many people that it was difficult for Fein to move from there.
"Congratulations Fein, you're so great!!!"
"Senior Fein, I want to join the basketball team so I can practice with you!"
"Aahhhh Fein, I love you!!!"
The female students seemed to be crazy about Fein's charm, even though Fein never intended to do that.
'They're so noisy... I want to go to a quiet place...' he thought irritably.
Shortly, someone suddenly grabbed Fein's hand and pulled him out of the crowd of students. He pulled Fein running from there to the roof of the deserted school.
"Fuuhh... They're like crazy," said the man who pulled Fein's hand.
"Right, that noisy girls. Where have you been? I thought you were going to watch it until the end," Fein asked the man who turned out to be Claire.
"Me? I watched you until the end. Afterward, I went to the cafeteria to buy this for you." Claire threw a bottle of cold drink at Fein.
Fein caught the bottle and drank it. He hadn't had anything to drink since earlier.
"Congratulations on your victory. Even though it was just an extracurricular demonstration, you played well," Claire said.
"Yes... I took it too seriously. I guess it's not bad to move around a bit instead of sitting in the library."
Claire smiled at that. The two of them sat against the wall while enjoying their drinks and resting for a while before continuing their work for the camp.
"Good job. I'm proud of you, Fein."
