Chapter 25: Sparks and shadows
Nathan walked beside Cael as they approached his house, the sun dipping below the horizon, casting the streets in a warm amber glow. The atmosphere between them was light, filled with Nathan's teasing remarks and Cael's shy laughter.
"You know, you should give me your number," Nathan said, grinning as he bumped his shoulder lightly against Cael's. "That way I can check up on you, make sure no other guys are stealing your attention."
Cael blushed, looking down at the art supplies in his hands. "Other guys? I doubt anyone's interested."
Nathan raised an eyebrow, stopping in his tracks. "Cael, you seriously don't see how irresistible you are, do you?"
The sincerity in Nathan's tone made Cael's heart race. He glanced at the ground, unsure how to respond. "I… I don't know about that," he muttered.
Nathan chuckled, leaning closer. "You're cute when you're shy, you know that?"
Before Cael could stammer out a reply, they arrived at his house. Cael sighed in relief, eager to escape Nathan's relentless charm, but as they walked up to the door, it opened abruptly.
Jade stood in the doorway, arms crossed, his expression a mix of worry and annoyance. "Cael," he began, his tone sharp, "who is this?"
Cael froze, caught completely off guard. He hadn't thought about how Jade might react to him coming home with someone he barely knew.
"This is Nathan," Cael said quickly, forcing a smile. "He's… a friend from the seminar."
Nathan, ever the charmer, stepped forward with a polite smile. "It's nice to meet you. I made sure Cael got home safely."
Jade's eyes narrowed as he sized Nathan up. "A friend from the seminar?" he repeated, skepticism dripping from his voice. He turned to Cael. "You went home with a complete stranger?"
"He's not a stranger!" Cael blurted, feeling the weight of Jade's glare. "We met at the seminar, and he's been really nice. He even helped me pick out art supplies."
Jade's frown deepened, clearly unconvinced. "Cael, you can't just trust anyone who's nice to you. What if—"
"Jade, I'm fine," Cael interrupted, his voice firm but pleading. "Nathan's a good guy. He's… harmless."
Nathan raised his hands in mock surrender. "I promise, I mean no harm. Just wanted to make sure he got home safely."
Jade's eyes remained cold as he addressed Nathan. "It's late. You should go."
Nathan nodded, maintaining his polite demeanor. "Of course. I'll see you around, Cael." He flashed Cael a quick smile before turning and walking away, leaving Cael standing awkwardly beside Jade.

As soon as Nathan was out of earshot, Jade turned to Cael, his expression a mix of frustration and concern. "What were you thinking, going home with someone you just met?"
Cael sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Jade, he's not dangerous. I met him at the seminar. He's… nice."
"Nice doesn't mean safe," Jade shot back. "You don't know anything about him."
Cael hesitated, biting his lip. "I know enough to know he's not a bad person. And I can take care of myself, Jade. You don't have to worry so much."
Jade's expression softened slightly, but his tone remained firm. "I'm always going to worry, Cael. You're my little brother now. It's my job to look out for you."
Cael smiled faintly, touched by Jade's protectiveness. "I appreciate that, but I'm not a kid. I know what I'm doing."
Jade sighed, clearly not convinced but unwilling to argue further. "Just… be careful, okay? The world isn't as kind as you think it is."
"I will," Cael promised.

The fourth day of the seminar dawned, and Cael arrived at the studio with a mix of excitement and nerves. He hadn't expected to enjoy the classes as much as he had, but they were quickly becoming a highlight of his week.
The room was already buzzing when he entered, the familiar scent of paints and graphite filling the air. At the front stood a petite older woman with silver hair tied into a neat bun, wearing a flowy cardigan adorned with paint stains. Her presence was warm yet commanding, and she clapped her hands to quiet the chatter.
"Good morning, everyone," she began with a kind smile. "For those of you who don't know me, I'm Ms. Elvira. I'll be assisting your instructors for today's anatomy session."
Cael smiled faintly at her soothing voice. He found a seat beside Nathan, who was already grinning at him. "Morning, Angel," Nathan said, his voice low and teasing.
Cael rolled his eyes but couldn't hide the faint blush creeping up his cheeks. "Stop calling me that."
"Never."
Before Cael could retort, Ms. Elvira spoke again. "Today's session will involve both individual practice and partner work. For the partner exercise, we'll have one model and one artist per pair."
The door opened, and a man walked in, his presence shifting the entire atmosphere. His jet-black hair framed his sharp features, and his dark eyes seemed to pierce through everyone in the room.
"Good morning," he said in a smooth, deep voice. "I'm Julls Hellen, your guest instructor for today."
Cael froze, his heart dropping to his stomach. Julls. The name alone sent a wave of dread through him. He stared at the man, unable to look away, and for a moment, their eyes met. Julls' expression was unreadable, but the intensity in his gaze made Cael's skin crawl.
Beside him, Nathan's demeanor changed instantly. The usual playfulness in his eyes vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating glare directed at Julls. The tension between them was immediate, crackling like static electricity.
"Cael," Nathan whispered, his voice low and tense. "Stay close."
"Do you know him?" Cael whispered back, his voice trembling.
"Unfortunately."
Ms. Elvira began assigning partners, moving through the rows with an air of authority. When she reached Cael and Nathan, she smiled warmly. "You two will work together. Cael, you'll be the model, and Nathan, you'll paint."
Nathan nodded, his grip tightening slightly on Cael's arm. "Perfect."
Julls, standing at the front, watched the exchange with narrowed eyes. "Let's begin," he said curtly, his tone betraying none of the emotions simmering beneath his calm facade.
Cael moved to the platform at the center of the room, feeling Julls' gaze on him every step of the way. He tried to focus on Nathan, who was setting up his easel with a practiced ease that surprised Cael.
"You know how to paint?" Cael asked, his voice tinged with disbelief.
Nathan smirked. "What, did you think I was just here to flirt with you?"
Cael pouted, lightly punching Nathan's shoulder. "You could've told me you were this good!"
Nathan leaned closer, his voice dropping to a whisper. "I like surprising you."
The playful exchange only seemed to deepen Julls' glare, his dark eyes practically boring holes into Nathan's back. Cael felt the tension in the room grow heavier with every passing second, and he couldn't shake the feeling that he was caught in the middle of something far bigger than he understood.
Cael nervously glance between Nathan and Julls, his heart heavy with unease as questions swirled in his mind. What had he gotten himself into?
