The Strongest Beast Tamer: My New Life in Another World

Chapter 4: Approaching the City

Max could see the city gates in the distance, the bustling sounds of life drifting toward him with every step. The towering walls of stone and the occasional flash of guards patrolling above made him pause.

He glanced at his companions, Tails perched on his shoulder and Tusk trotting faithfully by his side. A small smile played on his lips as he crouched down to meet their gazes.

"Alright, you two," Max began, his tone calm but serious. "We're almost at the city. But here's the thing… bringing a giant boar and a monkey with glowing tails into town? Probably not the best idea."

Tails tilted his head, chirping curiously, while Tusk let out a low grunt as if in agreement.

"Don't worry," Max said reassuringly. "You'll both be safe. I'm going to put you into my Pocket Dimension for now. You can relax in there while I figure things out in the city."

Both companions nodded, their trust in Max evident. He stood back up, stretching his hand out toward them. "Alright, here we go. Skill: Pocket Dimension!"

A faint glow surrounded his hand as he uttered the chant. "By this bond, I grant you refuge… within the sanctuary of my will. Enter now, and stay safe until I call upon you again."

A soft swirl of light enveloped Tails and Tusk, and with a faint hum, they disappeared into the shimmering portal that opened momentarily before closing. The air grew still again, and Max let out a deep breath.

"Well, that takes care of that," he said to himself, brushing his hands off. He glanced back at the city gates. "Time to see what this place has to offer."

With a confident step, Max continued his journey toward the gates, ready for whatever awaited him inside.

With a confident step, Max walked toward the gates. The guards gave him a quick glance but let him through without issue. As he passed under the archway, the sounds of the bustling city filled his ears.

The streets were alive with energy. People laughed and smiled as they went about their day. Vendors stood at their stalls, shouting out their wares to attract customers.

"Fresh bread! Still warm from the oven!" one vendor called.

"Fine jewelry for your loved ones! You won't find better craftsmanship anywhere else!" another shouted.

Max couldn't help but smile as he walked through the crowded streets. He saw children playing, their laughter ringing out as they chased each other around. The vibrant colors of shop signs and banners caught his eye.

"The Lucky Coin Tavern," Max muttered, reading the sign of a nearby building. "That sounds interesting. And over there… Ironwood Smithy? Bet they have some good weapons. Oh, and The Golden Apple Inn… fancy."

He kept walking, his eyes darting from one shop to another. "This place is incredible," he said to himself. "I've never seen anything like it. What should I do first? Maybe grab some food? Or check out the blacksmith?"

As he wandered, Max suddenly remembered something. "Wait," he said, stopping in his tracks. "Do I even have money?"

He opened his item box, scrolling through the contents with a curious look. To his relief, he saw a pouch labeled "Starter Gold." He pulled it out and opened it, spilling a few coins into his hand. They gleamed in the sunlight, and Max quickly counted them.

"Not bad," he said with a grin. "Looks like the gods thought ahead. Alright, I've got enough to get started here." He tucked the pouch back into his item box and glanced around again, his excitement growing. "Okay, Max. Time to explore and see what this city has in store."

With a renewed sense of purpose, he set off down the lively street, ready for whatever adventures awaited him.

Max wandered through the bustling streets, his eyes darting between the lively vendors and the various storefronts lining the roads. The scents of grilled meat, fresh bread, and exotic spices filled the air, making his stomach rumble.

"Alright, Max," he muttered to himself, "let's see what kind of food this place has to offer."

He approached a vendor grilling skewers of meat over an open flame. The vendor, a cheerful older man with a wide-brimmed hat, greeted him warmly.

"Freshly cooked, just for you, traveler," the vendor said. "Only two silver coins for a skewer. Guaranteed to satisfy!"

Max grinned, digging into his pouch for coins. "I'll take two, thanks." He handed over the money and received two steaming skewers in return. The savory aroma made his mouth water, and he took a bite immediately.

"Mmm," he said between bites. "This is amazing. Definitely worth the silver."

As he ate, Max continued walking, weaving through the crowds and taking in the city's vibrant atmosphere.

"So, what's next?" he mused aloud. "I've got food, but now what? Do I find work? Explore more of the city? Maybe look for some quests? There's gotta be something here that can give me a sense of direction."

He paused near a fountain in the city square, watching children play and splash in the water. The laughter and energy reminded him of simpler times, and he couldn't help but smile.

"Alright, focus," he said, shaking his head. "First things first. I need a place to stay tonight. Can't exactly sleep in the streets."

Max began asking passersby for recommendations. Most people were friendly and offered their thoughts.

"The Golden Apple Inn is the fanciest in town," said a middle-aged merchant. "If you've got the coin, that's where you'll want to stay."

"If you're looking for something affordable, try the Traveler's Rest near the east gate," suggested a young woman carrying a basket of flowers. "It's simple but clean."

"Thank you," Max said to each of them, grateful for the advice.

After a bit more wandering, he decided to check out the Traveler's Rest. As he walked through the streets, he continued to talk to himself, thinking aloud.

"So, first day in this world, huh? Let's see. I fought boars, tamed a beast, leveled up, and now I'm exploring a city. Not bad, Max. Not bad at all." He chuckled to himself. "Still, I've gotta figure out what I'm really doing here. What's the big goal? Can't just wander forever."

Eventually, Max spotted the inn. A wooden sign hanging above the door read "Traveler's Rest" in elegant lettering. Pushing the door open, he stepped inside.

The interior was warm and inviting, with a crackling fire in the hearth and the smell of baked goods wafting through the air. At the counter stood a silver-haired woman with striking blue eyes, speaking with the innkeeper. She seemed to be negotiating prices, her calm and confident demeanor catching Max's attention.

Max approached the counter and waited politely until it was his turn. The silver-haired woman glanced at him briefly before returning to her conversation with the innkeeper.

"Two nights," she said, placing a few silver coins on the counter. "And I'd like a room with a view, if possible."

The innkeeper nodded. "We'll take care of you, miss. Enjoy your stay."

When the woman stepped aside, Max greeted the innkeeper. "Hi. I'd like a room for the night."

"Of course," the innkeeper said. "That'll be five silver. Includes breakfast in the morning."

Max handed over the coins, then followed the innkeeper's directions to his room. As he climbed the stairs, he found himself reflecting on the day.

Once inside his room, Max set his bag down and collapsed onto the bed. The events of the day played back in his mind as he stared up at the wooden ceiling.

"What a day," he said softly. "Let's see… I tamed Tusk, fought off those giant boars, and leveled up five times. That alone would be enough for one day. But then I made it to this city, got some amazing food, and even found a place to stay."

He chuckled, resting his arms behind his head. "This world is crazy. I mean, I've got magic now. Magic! And companions like Tails and Tusk who actually listen to me. It's like I'm living in one of those games I used to play."

Max closed his eyes for a moment, letting the sounds of the city outside lull him into a sense of calm. "But what's next? I can't just sit around enjoying the scenery. I need a plan. Maybe I'll look for work tomorrow. Or check out some of those shops I passed. There's gotta be someone who needs a Beast Tamer."

He opened his eyes again, glancing at the window where the faint glow of the street lamps illuminated the room.

"One step at a time, Max," he said with a small smile. "Today was a good start. Let's see what tomorrow brings."

With that, he let out a contented sigh, pulling the blanket over himself as he drifted off to sleep, ready for whatever adventures awaited him next.

To be continued…
