Chapter 2 The Guillotine Princess's end, my end.
“Now… just three months until the engagement ceremony…”
After the announcement of the engagement with Princess Abigail, I returned to my room and took a deep breath. The Holy Maiden had spoken of my engagement with Abigail, the “Guillotine Princess,” as if it were the world’s misfortune, but it wasn’t.
The real Princess Abigail was kind and had always been there for me, even when I was just a hostage prince from the enemy kingdom. She had been my only ally, my savior, and then my betrayer, leading me to the guillotine.
But I found out the truth in the end.
◇
“Hehehe! You truly are a fool!”
Captured by Valrois soldiers storming the palace, I was on the ground, and Prince Louis was laughing heartily as he looked at me. I was confused, not understanding what had happened.
After all, the kingdom had sent its soldiers into the empire to rescue me. I had followed the instructions of the Holy Maiden, who was the only one who had shown me kindness, and welcomed Valrois soldiers into the capital.
But then Louis explained it all. I had been used by the kingdom.
I had always had a suspicion, but I couldn’t accept it. Because even the kindness of the only person who had ever been there for me, the Holy Maiden, was a lie.
“However, why can’t I accept it? Even though you all show such anger to them, why can’t you show me the same? Why do you look at me as if I were invisible?”
I couldn’t help but mutter to myself. They showed their emotions to others but not to me.
But then…
“Yes, indeed… Why can’t I… do the things ordinary people can?”
The expression on Princess Abigail’s face changed from anger to something else, something I hadn’t seen in three years: tears.
Could it be… her tears?
◇
“Wait! Our story isn’t over yet!”
“Silence!”
They restrained Princess Abigail, who was about to say something to me. I struggled, but I couldn’t move.
“Gustave, Your Highness.”
I was held back, and I couldn’t move. And then…
“I scream in a maddening voice.
For the first time… for the first time, she smiled at me…
And I let it end because of my foolishness…
“Why should I grieve! We’ll meet again soon!”
The mocking words of the Holy Maiden served as a signal. Now it was my turn to be secured in the guillotine’s restraints, and a soldier raised an axe to cut the rope.
With this outcome, I was undoubtedly bound for the underworld, to face the punishment of Princess Abigail.
But if I had one wish…
“Hehehe! …Farewell, dear naive fool.”
