Chapter 649: Chapter 648: Silencing
At an intersection in South Los Angeles leading to Long Beach, outside a large bar, the roar of car engines was deafening. The sound alone made it clear that the four cars parked there had powerful V8 engines. The four muscle cars lined up in a striking formation.
Equally eye-catching were the sexy, provocatively dressed Latin girls at the scene, dazzling like embellishments in the steel jungle.
Under director Justin Lin's instructions, one camera was dedicated to switching between shots of their hips and chests. Like all racing events worldwide, street racing was no exception when it came to the presence of race girls.
The main camera, mounted on a high crane, was set up in front of the four cars. The lens, through specially made car windows, gave close-ups of Matthew, Paul Walker, and two other actors.
The roar of the engines grew louder, and smoke billowed from the car tails. A race girl, wearing high heels and swaying her sexy figure, walked to the front of the four cars.
"Okay!" Justin Lin shouted through a loudspeaker. "That's a wrap for this take!"
Upon hearing this, Matthew turned off his car engine and stepped out. They wouldn't race the cars directly.
Justin Lin then shouted, "Set crew, get ready!"
The set decorators immediately entered the cars, setting up green screens behind the windows and the driver's seats.
With nothing to do for the moment, Matthew chatted with director Justin Lin about the next scenes. Suddenly, a water cup was handed to him from behind. He took the cup and sipped from it, ready to thank whoever handed it to him, but he noticed the hand was slender and delicate, not Bella Anderson's.
Matthew turned around and saw Lily Collins smiling at him from behind.
"Lily..." Matthew was pleasantly surprised. "What brings you here?"
Taking the water cup from Matthew and screwing the lid back on, Lily Collins stepped closer and stood beside him. "Alice Cullen's scenes are all done. I came back from Portland and heard you were filming here tonight, so I came by to see."
"Where's Bella?" Matthew asked.
Lily Collins pointed to the distance, "She just got a call and went to answer it, so I took over your personal assistant duties temporarily."
Matthew nodded. Lily Collins tilted her head and asked, "Aren't you happy to see me?"
Looking at Lily Collins' exquisite, charming, and beautiful face, Matthew replied, "Of course I am. Who wouldn't be happy to see Angel Lily?"
Lily Collins giggled and wrapped her arm around his, "It's so much better here. The Twilight set was driving me crazy."
Matthew curiously asked, "What happened?"
"Nothing much." Lily Collins didn't want to bother Matthew with trivial matters. "I can handle it. It's just annoying."
Matthew didn't press further. He had heard during the pre-production of "Twilight" that Nina Dobrev and Lily Collins, the two leading actresses, did not get along well. Such conflicts were common in Hollywood. He never intervened, believing that if someone couldn't handle minor troubles, they'd face more obstacles in the future.
After chatting for a while, Lily Collins suddenly asked, "Matthew, is it true that Nina Dobrev says she's dating you?"
Matthew didn't care about others' opinions on this matter and casually said, "Sort of."
As a longtime fan of Matthew, Lily Collins understood his ways well. Hearing his response, she nodded knowingly. "Got it."
"What do you mean, got it?" Matthew asked, looking at her.
Lily Collins shook her head playfully. "Nina Dobrev is no different from Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Alba—just a temporary fling for you."
"You know a lot," Matthew joked. "Should I throw you into the Pacific Ocean to silence you?"
Lily Collins widened her eyes, "Hey! Hey! Hey..." She let go of Matthew's arm and pointed to her face. "Would you really throw such a pretty and cute girl into the ocean to feed the fish?"
Matthew replied seriously, "I wouldn't with my eyes open, but I might with them closed."
The four cars were being prepped and set apart. Other actors were also taking a break. Paul Walker approached Matthew and Lily Collins.
"Matthew," Paul Walker looked at Lily Collins curiously. "Who is this?"
Lily Collins hugged Matthew's arm again, jokingly saying, "I'm Matthew's girlfriend. I know you, Paul Walker."
Paul Walker looked at Matthew in surprise, seemingly asking when he got a real girlfriend.
Matthew flicked Lily Collins' forehead gently, saying, "She's joking." Then he introduced, "This is Lily Collins, a student I rescued from the demon principal."
Lily Collins protested, "Student? Come on, Matthew, I'm nineteen."
A car engine roared like a beast. Lily Collins turned to look, cheering loudly like the onlooking fans. After a few seconds, she turned back to Matthew and Paul Walker. "What's so strange about that? I'm a fan too, of course I get excited seeing a shoot."
Matthew shook his head helplessly and told Paul Walker, "Ignore her."
Paul Walker turned his attention back to Matthew, asking, "I heard Vin Diesel filed a motion in court to issue an injunction to stop us from using the name Dominic Toretto and to halt the infringement during filming?"
"Yes," Matthew nodded lightly. "The court inquired about it three days ago."
He smiled and said, "Don't worry, Vin Diesel won't cause any trouble. Dominic Toretto is a character he played, but he doesn't own the rights. The court has already dismissed his application."
"What a jerk!" Paul Walker had no good impression of Vin Diesel. "He was a troublemaker on set. Even after being kicked out of the series, he still wants to cause trouble."
Matthew seemed indifferent, "Vin Diesel's career is basically over. He's reduced to B-grade films. He's probably just trying to annoy us and see if he can make some money from a settlement."
When he and David Ellison acquired the sequel rights to the series, they anticipated many scenarios. They obtained 100% of the rights, leaving no room for disputes. Vin Diesel's attempt to create trouble with the rights was futile.
Paul Walker was still a bit angry. "I'd love to shove Vin Diesel's bald head up his own ass."
"Hey..." Lily Collins interjected, "Is it appropriate to use such language in front of a girl?"
Matthew glared at her, "You're such a troublemaker."
The car's filming seemed to pause, and the set quieted down. Bella Anderson approached and told Matthew, "Helen called. Rolex sent a formal letter. Starting in July, you'll be the brand's global media ambassador."
Matthew nodded, "Got it."
Bella Anderson added, "Helen will temporarily leave her other work tomorrow to go to Rolex's headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, to begin new negotiations."
Matthew thought for a moment and said, "Bella, take over some of Helen's work temporarily." He instructed, "Make sure to compile the New York Times bestseller list for me."
Since last year, he had been looking for "The Hunger Games" among new novels. Acquiring movie rights early was advantageous; otherwise, once a book became a hit, the rights would be more expensive, and Hollywood competition would be fierce.
He was also keeping an eye on another novel. Recently, he had Helen Herman find a ghostwriter and sign a strict copyright agreement, offering an attractive reward for writing an Isabella Swan and Edward Cullen fanfiction with a dominant CEO falling for a Mary Sue, incorporating S/M themes and maximizing allowable content on North American internet platforms.
The work he mentioned for Bella Anderson was actually referring to this. If the "Twilight" movie became a hit, the fanfiction would have marketable potential.
After instructing Bella Anderson, Matthew was called for his scene. He entered the set, got into a muscle car, and with the help of the stunt coordinator, performed actions like turning the steering wheel, shifting gears, and sudden braking.
Matthew wouldn't perform the actual car stunts; these scenes would be edited into the action sequences.
