Chapter 9: The Old Man
Vardan had been training relentlessly since James's death, his only goal now being to avenge his mentor and destroy the organization that had taken everything from him. His days were spent in solitude, pushing his body to its limits, no longer under the guidance of the man who had once been both a teacher and a protector. One day, while rummaging through the storage room, Vardan's gaze landed on some of James's old belongings. He ran his fingers over the items, memories of their time together flooding back—training sessions, lessons, and moments of laughter.
Among the things, Vardan noticed a phone tucked away in the corner. Curious, he picked it up and, after unlocking it, found a single message left by one of the old Seven Wings. The message simply read: Meet me at the park tomorrow evening.
---
The following evening, Vardan made his way to the park, his heart pounding with anticipation. He didn't know who this old wing was, but the message was a sign—something was about to change. As he walked through the park, his eyes scanning the shadows, he eventually found a bench and sat, lost in thought.
He barely had a chance to look around before an old man appeared before him. The man had an aura of power that was unmistakable, and without thinking, Vardan stood up and blurted out, "Teacher James, I miss you."
The old man turned to him, his eyes cold with an edge of suspicion. In an instant, his hand shot out, grabbing Vardan by the neck with a vice-like grip. Vardan struggled to break free, his body growing weaker from the hold, but with a surge of strength, he managed to escape.
The old man, still holding him at arm's length, demanded, "How did you know about James? What have you done to him?"
Vardan's breath came in sharp gasps as he replied, his voice shaking, "I was his student... I knew James worked at the same school as me…"
The old man's gaze hardened as he asked again, "Where is James?"
Vardan's face fell as he spoke the words he never thought he would say: "James is no longer with us. He died fighting in his old age."
The old man's expression softened in shock, the weight of the news sinking in. But Vardan, his voice filled with unwavering determination, added, "I'm going to destroy the organization... and the new boss."
The old man stared at him, disbelief in his eyes at first, but then, seeing the fire in Vardan's gaze, he began to understand the depth of his resolve.
"Do you understand how powerful the organization is?" the old man asked.
Vardan's answer was simple, yet full of conviction: "I'm ready to take them all down."
The old man sighed deeply before answering Vardan's next question. "I wanted to meet James... because one of the old Seven Wings is dead now. There are only four of us left. James, the strongest, is gone... there is no more hope."
Vardan shook his head. "James isn't dead. He lives in my heart, and I will get revenge for him. I will take down the organization."
The old man, visibly moved by Vardan's words, smiled softly. "You have the spirit of James in you, boy."
Vardan blinked in surprise as the old man introduced himself. "My name is Johan."
Vardan's eyes widened. Johan—the name echoed in his mind. He knew exactly who the old man was. Johan was one of the Seven Wings, renowned as the strongest sword user in the world.
"Do you know about the other old wings?" Vardan asked eagerly.
Johan's expression grew more somber. "I knew three of the old wings, including James. But now, they're all dead, and I don't know the whereabouts of the other four. I've had no connection with them."
As Johan stood to leave, Vardan's voice stopped him. "Please, train me. Teach me how to become strong."
Johan paused, a knowing smile crossing his lips. "Why? James already trained you. What else could I possibly teach you?"
Vardan's gaze grew serious. "James trained me to fight... but he never taught me how to kill."
Johan's smile deepened as he saw the resolve in Vardan's eyes, recognizing James's spirit within him. As the sun dipped below the horizon, Johan finally nodded.
"I'll train you," he said. "But only if you're prepared to do whatever it takes."
Vardan's heart swelled with determination. He was ready. This was the beginning of the path that would lead him to destroy the organization and honor James's legacy.
