Chapter 33: Love, Worry, and a Beating Heart
The morning sun spilled gently through the curtains, casting golden light across the soft sheets. Wu Mei stirred first, her body instinctively rising before her mind fully awoke. Her delicate hand reached out across the bed—empty. Qin Yanzhou was still asleep.
With a soft smile, she slipped out from under the covers and padded quietly to the bathroom. The warm water ran as she washed up and fixed her hair into a loose, comfortable bun. A soft cotton robe draped over her shoulders as she headed to the kitchen.
She wanted to surprise Qin Yanzhou with breakfast—something comforting. She remembered his favorite dish: pork and preserved egg congee, with a side of scallion pancakes and soy milk. She moved gracefully around the kitchen, pouring rice into the pot, slicing ingredients, and humming softly to herself.
The scent of cooking gradually filled the air, drifting up the stairs. Qin Yanzhou stirred in his sleep, his brows furrowing slightly at the absence of warmth beside him. Opening his eyes, he looked to his side—and found it empty.
"Mei?" he called softly.
Receiving no reply, he rose and threw on a loose white shirt and black lounge pants. Barefoot, he descended the stairs—and paused.
There she was, her figure framed in morning light, standing at the stove. The scent of food, the gentle humming—it filled his heart with something soft and unspoken.
He walked up behind her quietly and leaned in, placing a warm kiss on the side of her neck.
"Let me help you," he whispered, his voice husky from sleep.
Wu Mei flinched slightly from surprise but laughed when she saw him.
"You scared me," she said, playfully swatting his arm.
They finished preparing breakfast together—she setting the table, and he pouring the soy milk. When they sat down, Qin Yanzhou watched her closely.
"You really know how to make a man feel spoiled," he said, taking a bite of the congee. "Perfect, as always."
Wu Mei smiled, but there was a subtle weariness in her eyes.
After breakfast, Qin Yanzhou leaned back in his chair, as if remembering something.
"There's a flower lantern festival downtown today," he said. "It's said to be the most beautiful one this year. Do you want to go?"
Wu Mei hesitated for a moment, unsure if she was feeling strong enough. But she saw the excitement in his eyes and didn't want to disappoint him.
"Sure," she said. "Let me get changed."
They both dressed elegantly. Wu Mei wore a soft cream-colored dress with a beige coat, while Qin Yanzhou wore a tailored charcoal-grey suit with no tie, looking effortlessly dashing. They made their way through the bustling city until they reached the festival.
Petals floated through the air like confetti, carried by the light wind. Colorful lanterns shaped like flowers glowed softly along the pathways. Music drifted from the pavilions, and the chatter of happy families surrounded them.
Wu Mei smiled at the beauty, but her hands trembled slightly. The crowd, the scent of flowers, the cold air—it was all beginning to feel overwhelming. She pressed a hand to her forehead, feeling slightly dizzy.
Qin Yanzhou noticed. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," she whispered, trying to push through the discomfort.
But only moments later, her vision swam. Her knees buckled.
"Wu Mei!" Qin Yanzhou caught her just in time, cradling her in his arms. Panic gripped him as he called out, waving to his assistant.
"Call an ambulance! Now!"
The assistant ran for help. A small crowd gathered, but Qin Yanzhou ignored them all, holding Wu Mei close, brushing the hair away from her pale face.
"Stay with me," he whispered, his voice trembling. "Please..."
The ambulance arrived quickly. He climbed in with her, refusing to let go even for a moment.
At the hospital, after the rush of doctors and tests, one of them approached Qin Yanzhou with a gentle smile.
"Mr. Qin, your wife is okay. She fainted due to stress and low blood pressure. But there's one more thing you should know... She's pregnant."
The words struck him like thunder. He blinked. "What... what did you say?"
"She's about four weeks along. She needs rest, warmth, and less emotional strain."
The doctor walked away, leaving him standing there in stunned silence.
Qin Yanzhou walked into the hospital room, where Wu Mei was now resting with an IV in her arm. Her eyes opened slowly as he sat beside her, gently taking her hand.
"Why didn't you tell me?" he asked, voice soft but hurt.
Wu Mei looked away. "I wasn't sure how you will react when you will know. I didn't want to worry you."
"Worry me? Mei… you scared the life out of me today," he said, his eyes red. "Don't ever think you to keep secrets from me anymore. We're married. You're my everything."
She teared up. "I was afraid. Of how things can change, that I will not be strong enough to protect the baby."
He leaned forward, resting his forehead against hers.
"Then let me be strong for both of us. Let me take care of you. Of both of you."
And after Qin Yuanzhou he took a special cream for Wu Mei and massage her belly and said " Does your belly hurts or do you feel something out of the way.
And Wu Mei said " I'm fine,it doesn't hurt anymore"
He gently placed his hand on her abdomen.
"I'm going to be a father," he whispered in awe.
Wu Mei nodded slowly, and he kissed her forehead tenderly.
"Rest now. I'll be right here. Always."
She closed her eyes, a peaceful smile on her lips. Qin Yanzhou held her hand tighter, his heart brimming with emotions too deep for words.
And she sleep peacefully in the arms of Qin Yangzhou, Qin Yuanzhou on the other hand could no longer be happiness that he would become a father.
To be continued.
