The Chronomancer's Odyssey

Chapter 17: A New Audience

Arion opened his eyes slowly, the blinding white light above him forcing him to squint. As his vision adjusted, he found himself lying in a soft bed, the sheets smooth and pristine. The room around him was unlike anything he had seen before—a luxurious, futuristic hospital suite with glowing walls and an ambient hum of advanced medical equipment. Holographic displays floated near the bed, showing his vitals in vivid, shifting colors.

"Arion?" a familiar voice called out. He turned his head slightly and saw his squad gathered near the foot of his bed. Vespera, Torrak, Kira, Kethar Droz, and Damon were all there, their expressions a mixture of relief and exhaustion.

Vespera was the first to step forward, her usual confident demeanor softened. "You're finally awake," she said, her voice tinged with a rare hint of emotion.

Kira crossed her arms, a smile breaking through her stern face. "We were starting to think you'd sleep through the next mission."

Damon chuckled, adding, "I kept telling them you're tougher than you look. Glad I was right."

Arion sat up slowly, the ache in his body a stark reminder of the battle. He glanced around at his squad, a faint smile forming on his lips. "How long was I out?" he asked, his voice hoarse.

"Almost a week," Vespera replied.

The words hit him like a hammer. "A week?" he repeated, his thoughts racing. I need to restrain myself, he thought. Using a skill like that—this body can't handle it.

Before he could dwell further, the door slid open with a soft hiss. A doctor in a sleek white coat entered, holding a holographic tablet. He approached Arion with a professional smile. "Good to see you awake, Mr. Chronos. How are you feeling?"

"Tired," Arion admitted.

The doctor nodded, scanning the tablet. "That's expected. You've expended all of your energy reserves, which is why you collapsed. Thankfully, there's no permanent damage. You just need rest and to be mindful of your limits in the future." He glanced at the squad. "You're all cleared to leave as soon as you're ready."

Arion gave a small nod, and the doctor left the room. The group began gathering their belongings, Kira hoisting her battle hammer over her shoulder while Damon carefully packed his medical supplies. The atmosphere was lighter now, the relief of Arion's recovery palpable.

Just as they were about to step out of the room, the door slid open again. This time, a man in a decorated military uniform entered. His presence commanded attention, and the insignia on his chest marked him as the commander of the monster subjugation force.

"Arion Chronos and squad," the man began, his deep voice echoing in the room. "The King of Khorad-7 has requested your presence. He wishes to personally thank you for your efforts in defeating the creature."

The squad exchanged glances before Arion spoke. "We'll go."

The commander nodded, gesturing for them to follow. "A private ship is waiting for you. This way."

The spaceship was like nothing they had ever seen. Its sleek, angular design exuded wealth and power, with a metallic silver hull that gleamed under the hangar lights. The interior was just as impressive, with plush seats, ambient lighting, and a panoramic view of the stars through the wide windows.

As they settled into the luxurious cabin, the commander stood near the entrance. "The journey to Khorad-7's capital city will take about an hour," he informed them.

The squad took the opportunity to relax, the tension of the past week finally beginning to fade. Torrak leaned back in his seat, his massive frame taking up more space than it should. Vespera stared out at the stars, her fingers idly tracing the edge of her energy rifle. Kethar Droz sat silently, his sharp features unreadable as always.

Arion, still feeling the weight of his exhaustion, closed his eyes for a moment. The hum of the ship's engines was oddly soothing, and he allowed himself to drift into a light rest.

When they arrived, the view outside was breathtaking. The capital city of Khorad-7 spread out before them, a harmonious blend of nature and technology. Lush, green landscapes stretched as far as the eye could see, interspersed with towering skyscrapers that seemed to pierce the sky. Floating vehicles moved seamlessly between the buildings, and the air shimmered with the faint glow of energy fields.

The ship landed smoothly on a private pad near an opulent mansion—the king's residence. The commander led them down the ramp and through a series of grand halls adorned with intricate designs and glowing crystal-like structures.

Finally, they stood before a set of massive double doors. The commander turned to them. "The King is waiting inside. He's eager to meet the heroes of Khorad-7."

The doors began to open, revealing a maid who stepped forward and bowed politely. "Please, follow me," she said softly. The squad followed her into the mansion, their eyes widening as they took in the grandeur around them. The interior was a masterpiece of design, with glowing chandeliers, polished floors, and walls adorned with intricate, futuristic artwork.

The maid led them to a grand dining room, where a long table was set with an array of dishes that looked as exquisite as the room itself. The squad was awestruck by the opulence.

"Please, have a seat," the maid said, gesturing to the chairs around the table.

Moments later, the King of Khorad-7 entered the room. He was a striking figure, with white hair, piercing red eyes, and tan skin. Despite looking to be in his 40s, his presence carried the weight of someone far older and wiser.

The squad immediately stood and paid their respects.

"At ease," the King said, his voice calm but authoritative. "Please, sit back and eat. I know you haven't had breakfast yet, so eat as much as you like."

The squad murmured their thanks, settling into their seats as servants began serving the food. The meal was as delicious as it looked, and for the first time in days, they allowed themselves to relax and enjoy the moment.

Minutes later, after they had finished eating, the King stood and gestured for them to follow him. "Come. There is much to discuss. I will guide you to my office."
