Chapter 11: Goldilocks and the four bears part 3
Maya bit her lower lip as she carefully read the contract in front of her. She wanted to avoid being tricked again into a bad deal.
She read a line and paused. Raising her head, she stared at Dalton. "Uh, I will have to join you on business trips to cook for you?" That would be difficult. There was no way her stepfather, Frederick Hathaway, would allow her to miss work, not even for a day, and she couldn't leave her junior chef position at the restaurant.
"Yes, but not now. I won't be traveling much this year. When the time comes. We will find a solution." Dalton said.
"Okay," Maya felt relieved. she doesn't need to worry about that for the time being. Maya continued reading the contract. The monthly salary Dalton was offering was incredibly generous, with a lot of zeros. She is going to have a substantial amount of money in her bank account!
Maya swells with joy inside. If it weren't for the IV drip connected to her veins, she might jump with excitement.
"Wait, I can quit on my own terms?" she asked in disbelief.
"Yes," Dalton confirmed.
Maya's face broke into a wide smile. "I really like this contract; you are very generous, Mr. Black… I mean, Dalton. Thank you so much! Don't worry, I'm not quitting this job anytime soon. The salary is fantastic!" she exclaimed with joy.
The twins laughed at her over-excitement, and Dalton simply nodded.
"Jeez, you're acting like he offered you a million dollars as a salary," Aiden scoffed.
Maya shot him a dagger stare. "Not all of us sell sports cars for a living. Some of us have to hustle hard to make money."
"Hustle? Do you do construction work for a living? you just cook. Cooking doesn't require much energy," Aiden retorted with a snort.
"You are so annoying, Aiden!"
Aiden rolled his eyes. "You've already told me. I get it."
Maya shakes her head but smiles afterward. Aiden is such a jerk; and even though he harassed her the first time they met. She has realized he is not bad at all and she actually enjoys talking to him. She can banter with him without the fear of getting hit, ending up with awful bruises, in contrast to her brother Terrence, who becomes angry and physically assaults her if she talks back.
Maya picked up the pen and signed the contract. "I'm done," she purred.
Dalton signed it as well.
"Now that you're done, can we please talk about your health?" Oliver asked politely.
"Sure," Maya said as she corrected her posture in the chair and prickled her ears to listen to Oliver.
"Is it alright if I ask you questions about your health in front of my annoying brothers?"
Maya nodded. "I don't mind. They saw me lying unconscious, so they might be wondering why."
"If you say so," Oliver replied. He felt more relaxed now and shifted into doctor mode.
"Did you suffer a traumatic brain injury?"
Maya shifted uncomfortably in her seat. "Yes, it happened two years ago. I fell down the stairs and hit my head." She lowered her head because Dalton was staring at her, making her feel nervous.
" How long was your recovery?"
"It took me a year and a half to recover and for my body to start functioning properly again. The brain trauma affected my speech, so I underwent speech therapy, which delayed my recovery," Maya shares sadly.
The doctors told Maya that it was a miracle she survived and that she should have faced more complications, such as paralysis. They were amazed that her body could function properly despite the severity of her traumatic brain injury.
Her chest ached as If she was reliving that dark moment in her life all over again.
Dalton's expression wavered with despair as he stared at Maya. "Sorry," he mouthed.
Maya smiled in surprise, touched by Dalton's concern for her. "Thank you," she mouthed back.
The other three brothers, including Aiden, wore sad expressions on their faces. Maya appreciated their sympathy.
"I'm sorry you've been through so much," Oliver said sympathetically. "What symptoms have you experienced since then?" he enquires.
"I experience dizziness frequently throughout the day. I blacked out when I overwork myself, and I constantly suffer from migraines and headaches."
"Are you on any medications?"
"Yes, but I don't take them often because I don't want to become addicted to drugs," she cringed.
Oliver sighs. "Okay, you might need to change your medication. It seems that the medication you are taking isn't effective, which is why you feel the urge to take more than you need in a day. We need to change your meds. I will run a few tests to find the best medication for you."
Maya frowns. "No," she declines. "I bet you're a top-notch doctor, I can't afford you or the medications—not this month, at least, until I get paid."
"Free healthcare is included in the contract," Dalton reminded her.
"Oh, right, why did I forget?" she laughed at herself, feeling quite silly. This must be the best job ever. She was beginning to think that Dalton was a very kind man. She stole a glance at his dashing, handsome face, and a warm, dazzling feeling washed over her heart. Of course, Dalton noticed her staring, and she had to quickly avert her gaze with embarrassment.
"In your free time, we will meet so I can run a series of tests and choose the best medication for you," Oliver quipped.
Maya nodded and took a deep breath. "Everything is settled. I need to get going. My shift is about to start. Can you please disconnect it?" she asked, pointing to the IV connected to her.
"Sure," Oliver said, doing her request, and Maya was freed from the IV. Whatever medication Oliver had added to the IV drip was a lifesaver. Maya had never felt this healthy before; she feels completely rejuvenated.
"You can start cooking for me in ten days. You need time to sort out a schedule that works best for you. Don't worry; there won't be any deductions. You will be paid in full at the end of the month," Dalton said in a formal tone, but Maya didn't miss the hint of kindness in his voice.
"Thank you, that's very kind of you," Maya said, She was shocked. After the ten days, there will only be three days left for the month to end, and he is paying her in full??
Cooking for Dalton will be fun! Maya was overjoyed; Dalton is a generous boss!
