Chapter 3: The Beast Awakens
The sound of heavy breathing echoed through the night, blending with the distant calls of nocturnal creatures and the rustle of wind through the trees. Kael's heart beat faster as he stood at the edge of the clearing, the moonlight casting long shadows across the forest. His grip tightened around the hilt of his sword. The stranger's words still lingered in his mind, but now, more than ever, he had to focus on the immediate threat. The beast was near.
The ground vibrated beneath his feet, a low rumble like distant thunder. It wasn't the wind this time. Kael's eyes darted across the dark expanse of the forest, searching for any sign of movement. His pulse quickened. The beast was closer, much closer than he had anticipated. He could almost feel its presence in the air — a dense, oppressive force that seemed to draw the very life from the woods.
Then, a low growl rumbled from the shadows, the sound sending a chill down Kael's spine. His breath caught in his throat, and he took a step back. The beast wasn't far. It was close, and it was angry.
Kael's hand tightened around his sword, his fingers slick with sweat. The metal gleamed faintly in the moonlight, but he knew it wouldn't be enough. Not for something like this. His father's words echoed in his mind: You have the power to control them…
But how? How was he supposed to tap into that power now, when the creature that had destroyed his entire village was about to tear him apart?
He glanced around, trying to find a sign, something that would guide him. The trees loomed tall, their twisted branches reaching out like grasping fingers, and the forest floor was a maze of roots and rocks. There was no clear path forward. There was no place to run. He had no choice but to face the beast head-on.
Suddenly, the growl became a roar, deafening and primal. The ground beneath Kael's feet shook violently as the beast emerged from the darkness, its massive form crashing through the underbrush. It was a creature unlike anything Kael had ever seen enormous, covered in thick, matted fur that rippled like waves in the moonlight. Its eyes gleamed with an unnatural red glow, and its jaws were filled with teeth as sharp as knives, glistening in the cold air.
Kael froze, unable to look away from the monster that stood before him. The creature's breath was hot and heavy, its massive chest rising and falling with each inhale. It was more than a beast. It was a force of nature, an embodiment of destruction.
For a moment, Kael considered fleeing. But he knew that running wouldn't solve anything. The beast would track him down, just as it had done with his village. No, he had to face it. He had to fight.
He lifted his sword, his hands trembling. The steel felt like nothing more than a toy in the face of such raw power. The creature took a step forward, its claws scraping against the earth, and Kael's heart raced. He couldn't let fear take hold. He had to be strong. He had to be the one to survive.
With a roar, the beast lunged, its jaws snapping shut just inches from Kael's head. He barely managed to dodge, throwing himself to the side, the beast's claws swiping through the air, missing him by mere inches. Kael rolled to his feet and spun around, the sword in his hand now feeling heavier than ever. The beast was relentless, its eyes burning with fury as it turned to face him again.
Kael raised his sword, ready to strike, but as he did, something strange happened. The air around him seemed to change, thickening, as if the very atmosphere was reacting to his movements. His father's words the words about his power flashed through his mind again.
You have the power to control them…
Kael didn't know how or why, but he felt something stir inside him. Something ancient, something wild. The power his father had spoken of it was there, buried deep within him, just waiting to be unlocked. He reached out, not with his sword, but with his mind, his senses stretching outward, feeling the creature's presence, understanding its movements. It was like he could feel the beast's heartbeat, the rhythm of its rage.
For the briefest of moments, Kael felt connected to the monster, not as a foe, but as something... familiar. The creature's rage was his own, the primal instinct to survive and conquer, the thirst for blood. But there was something else. Something deeper. It wasn't just about destruction. It was about control.
Kael closed his eyes, focusing on the bond he now felt. The beast's growls began to quiet, its movements slowing, as if it could sense the shift in the air. The rage in its eyes began to dull, and Kael's breath came slower, calmer. He extended his hand toward the beast, not in fear or anger, but with an open mind, an open heart.
The beast stopped. Its massive form trembled, its red eyes flickering, the fury beginning to fade. It growled softly, almost like a warning, but it no longer lunged. It was as if it was waiting for something waiting for Kael to make the next move.
Kael's fingers twitched, and for the first time, he felt something stir inside him. It was a feeling unlike anything he had ever known — a power far beyond anything his sword could offer. He took a step forward, his hand still extended, reaching out toward the beast. The air between them seemed to pulse, charged with energy, as if the very world was holding its breath.
He spoke, his voice low and steady, but with an authority he didn't fully understand. "Calm. Stop. You're not my enemy."
The creature's eyes flickered, the red glow beginning to fade, replaced by a dull amber. Its growls softened, becoming almost… respectful.
Kael's heart raced in his chest. He could feel the power growing inside him, the connection between him and the beast strengthening. It wasn't just a battle anymore. It was something more. A test. A chance to understand the power he had been given. To control the very force of nature that stood before him.
But then, just as Kael felt like he had a grasp on the situation, the beast suddenly recoiled, its eyes flashing bright red again. Its body tensed, and it let out an earsplitting roar that sent Kael stumbling backward.
The ground shook as the creature lunged once more, its fury returning with a vengeance. This time, Kael wasn't ready. The beast's claws slashed across his chest, knocking him to the ground with bone-shattering force. Pain exploded through Kael's body as he gasped for breath, the air knocked out of him.
Blood spilled from his wound, staining the snow beneath him, and for a moment, Kael's vision blurred. His sword lay just out of reach, the blade gleaming in the moonlight, but it was useless now. The beast was too powerful, its fury too intense.
Kael gritted his teeth, struggling to rise. He couldn't let this be the end. He had no choice but to fight back. He had to survive. The beast had already taken everything from him — his home, his father, his future.
He wouldn't let it take his life.
With a growl of defiance, Kael reached out, his hand grasping for the sword. As his fingers closed around the hilt, a surge of power coursed through him. The connection he had felt earlier, the bond with the beast, flared again. This time, it was stronger, sharper, as if the power was no longer just his to control — it was in the sword, in the air, in the beast itself.
The creature hesitated for a fraction of a second, its eyes locking with Kael's.
And then, Kael felt it.
A voice, deep and primal, inside his mind. It's not just the beast you must control…
Kael's eyes widened. What did that mean?
Before he could process, the beast lunged again, its claws coming down toward him. And this time, it was unlike anything Kael had ever felt before.
The true test had just begun.
